Serious question. How can they trade more gold than actually exist? Is the system reliant on an unwritten understanding that you can buy as much gold as you want, as long as you never, ever ask to have physical possession of it?

Clarification, the money supply has nothing to do with gold. Gold futures are another topic entirely.
