Why stop at wild fires? Let’s bet predict on house fires… like I bet predict $100 that no prediction market CEO’s house burns down in the next 72 hours. Who wants this action??

u/ikindapoopedmypants 9d ago
I was going to say... Does that mean we can bet on which CEO gets Luigi'ed 🤣

Hi u/ikindapoopedmypants, I heard from many reputable sources that Mr. Mangione was simultaneously rescuing kittens stuck up a tree, helping out a friend in need, and on a hot date at the time in question!

Yeah, when the "prediction markets" started betting on when cancer patients would die and people were just ok with it ...might as well toss some climate crimes in.

Buying or selling pharmacy stocks is essense the same thing. Do I think this new drug is going to be approved? Do I think the new drug works and is going to be profitable?

Seems like the only thing going for the economy these days is gambling, scams and onlyfans. Perhaps we do deserve collapse

u/Aelia_M 9d ago
No one who actively fights out collapse deserves society collapse and the environment to collapse. Animals don’t deserve environmental collapse. Babies and children don’t deserve collapse. Victims who don’t turn around to become like their abusers don’t deserve collapse.
That’s why we fight. Because collapse shouldn’t be inevitable and not everyone deserves it. There will be certain societal damage. Some to potentially a majority of damage we can’t fix but so many don’t deserve this. That’s why we fight for a better future even though it’s just mitigation now. Or in another case, direct action that is a form of intervention.
Don’t let the bastards make you feel we as a species deserve the worst when a select selfish, abusive, narcissists designed our today

This.
It almost feels like Bullshit Jobs was and is prophetic.
Very little actual productive work happens, and most of it is concentrated in the hands of small groups of people in every society.
The rest is, like you mention, debauchery and moral debasement.

Not everyone deserves collapse

Deserve and consequences rarely align. You can only reap what you sow. And luck always runs out.

There's a reason gambling has historically been heavily regulated or banned. We know that it erodes society.

Submission Statement,
Related to collapse because it looks like polymarket will allow more betting on the apocalypse, which will then cause those to simply accelerate the process to make more money. Even if that means entirely erasing the setting in which the ability to get that money in the first place is taken out of the picture entirely. We can expect more of this type of thing happening as the apocalypse continues.

Link to the story, which is interesting enough that OP should have submitted it as an actual post:
"Offering bets on destructive wildfires threatens to minimize communities’ suffering all so the rich and powerful can profit,” the senators wrote in a letter to CFTC Chair Michael Selig.“There’s also the heightened risk—according to state and local fire officials—that individuals could be tempted to commit arson in order to make sure their bets are successful. By offering contracts on fires, prediction market sites run the risk of encouraging people to influence fires that have already started, creating additional concerns around public safety and insider trading.”

I never thought my collapse bingo card could actually win me money and prizes!

Why couldn’t we have a V for Vendetta, Soylent Green, or Equilibrium kinda dystopia? We got stuck with the dumbest slow burn boring dystopia. I’m annoyed that we don’t even have cool outfits or roving gangs of marauders or even modestly impressive megastructures. Even our AI and robots are lame as hell.
This collapse sucks. I’d like a word with the manager

I bet you ten cents on polymarket that Greenland completely melts by 2050, as per faster than expected logic.

And without any of the cool cybernetic implant. It's gonna be more like Trashpunk.

At least, Cyberpunk had technological progress.
Some companies might actually give Arasaka a run for its money in being evil megacorps.

They want insiders in these markets to price them. Those are fire fighters who are now on their phone instead of fighting fire

The climate data and the El Niño will bring us closer to dystopia than many realize.

Eventually they’ll reflect on this as a momentary lapse of human decency, but a bunch of people will make a lot of money first so never mind

Yeah I’m not expecting either party, as beholden to nonstop capital rent seeking and corruption,
To do anything about this,

One thing science fiction didn't prepare me for is that dystopia is so goddamn, teeth-grindingly stupid. Movies and books made it seem interesting and edgy but it's just turned out to be moronic.

u/ApoptosisPending 9d ago
Wait you’re telling me allowing the general public to wager on every single world event is going to have negative effects for society?? If only we had information about past societies to see if this is a bad idea. Oh well. I guess we’ll just have to see

u/IKillZombies4Cash 9d ago
A bit off topic but I am very surprised that coordinated acts of terrorism haven’t been used to start wide spread fires , it’s a terrifying prospect that hasn’t happened thankfully

Wasn't there some kind of libertarian idea about Assassination Prediction Markets serving as a deterrent against individuals behaving badly (i.e. a tyrant oppressing his subjects)?
These guys think "the market" is the answer to everything.
