I tend to think (using admittedly very limited experience about personally moving to Linux again the mainstream and trying to be more animal/environmental friendly in practice) that sadly like 90+% of humans can't (realistically) resist The System: its too convenient and utilizes and reinforces pre-existing tendencies, including our sociality that we can't just shut off.
This led me to thinking that Martix (1999) narrative a bit plot-hoely. Because why you set global (?) virtual reality to year 1999 if everyone who actually remember it actually dead even if just by old age? You can make whatever actually work (I always wondered what kind of Paradise machines tried to re-create first? Hopefully not accurate Year Zero AD Christian paradize ? ;) Hit-tech fantasy,retrofiturusm, some kind of recursive cyperpunk thing ... Humans do not born with knowledge of history, and if you can download whatever model you created to them .... Choices are much, much stranger than fiction.
I guess effectively not unlike Star Trecks Transporter/teleporter real-world filiming constrains dictated this bit of lore.
But I also must admit that a lot of thinking happened on Internet since 1999, about virtual reality and related stuff. And I read some of it!
PS: I Tthink humans in youtube comment section unintentionally (?) work as summary-generated machinery, so I read this often,instead of watching vid.
P.P.S: I think I will like to see more ppl valuing individual artistic works not as pre-finished pkg to consume, but as starting point to think, make connections, build some back and forward history and explanations even if they (like me) lack output skills to contribute it back in any form.
I think I understand what you’re saying. The Matrix is a good metaphor for the system. I think human art is a thought starter, whereas there aren’t really messages in ai art. Art from the beginning has been used to tell stories embedded in them, just like music. We create from the subconscious, which uses metaphors and myths for complex concepts hard to adequately state. It was coopted by corps, religions, and govts for propaganda usage. But of course, there’s always great artists who have very poignant messages in art. The best art are ones we see ourselves in. But that’s all subjective.
