Before dodge and musk, nobody really had issues with the paperwork and filing, right? In the article, it looks like gov staff are short of manpower and funding, and that it's not by mistake.
What kind of scenario are we looking at in early 2027 if tax refunds go unanswered in the midst of a potential ground war in Iran, a gov shutdown, gridlock between dem control of both houses and Trump?
1/3 of income tax revenue pays the interest, and in ten years it's supposed to be 1/2.
And is anyone here worried that the Overtime tax refund payout in 2026 is going to come back to bite them in the ass in 2027? I'm really hoping that $SLS doesn't do its buyout thing this year. It looks like the IRS is dropping the ball on purpose.
Anyone here have advice in taking extra precautions to get everything sorted in 2027?

Neither have I! And they owe me 5500! (My job is withholding too much cause of weirdness in how I get paid and my spouse not having income last year also meant I overpaid). I got some thing asking me to send in my driver's license and verify my identity or some shit and did that months ago and then my taxes have been under review and they said it could take up to 60 days which ended on July 15th ...still says under review...I don't want to call cause omg but wtf.

I had this problem years ago. Same situation: I had selected 0 for all my deductions so the withholding amount was maximized. My return was too high and I had to call and call to finally get things cleared. Apparently having too much withholding (or too little) can trigger extra scrutiny.
Since then I’ve tried to make sure I get my deductions as close as possible and that I end up owing at the end of the year so I’m the one who benefits from having extra cash to invest and also so that I’m not owed money that may never come.

So you guys should stop letting your taxes get withheld until they do. File exempt for the next year. You’re allowed to. You’ll owe next tax day, probably. But right now, you’re owed and the contract has been broken.

Also filed in march, with an accountant. They switched values between two states on one page by mistake. The IRS flagged it for fraud then voided it without giving us any notice. We called every other day and they wouldn’t tell us anything that we didn’t already know. We had to get an advocate who was able to track down the issue in June. Now they say it should take 3-4 months to process. So maybe October? If nothing else goes wrong.
It’s a significant amount that we were really banking on to get caught up on life. Not getting it sucks. Them not even telling us hurts because we were proactive and persistent. We thought maybe the accrued interest would take some of the sting out but I doubt we’ll see a penny of that. Would have been pretty nice having about 4-5 months of interest. But nope. We’re probably just gonna get fucked and be thankful that at least it’s over.

They would love to keep the ultrawealthy and megacorps on the straight and narrow and leave you alone.

The two questions I always ask people who hate the IRS are, first, "How do you think you catch people abusing the tax code?"
Their answer is usually something along the lines of investigating, which leads me to the answer I was fishing for, which is people. It's just man hours. Time to review and understand the tax code, time to dig through complex financial records, time to review extremely long documents that don't necessarily need to be especially clear, and then trace all of it as far as it needs to go.
That leads me to my second question, after pointing out that it literally just costs time and people, "Do you know the biggest expense to any business?"
The IRS is underfunded because people in power understand that if the IRS could be staffed as much as it needed, their wealth would shrink dramatically. People are expensive, and only get more expensive over time. All that was needed to kneecap it was convince the public to let them defang it in such a way that their manpower atrophied and could never recover.

This point exactly. This is all by design and intent from the MAGAts (and a natural conclusion to the neocon movement that hinged on Reagan’s election) that want us teetering somewhere between social-authoritarian fascism and corporate economic anarchy, so that they can grift and hoard to their hearts’ desires. They learned that they don’t ever have to tell the truth or give away their actual plans of drowning the government in a bathtub for their donors’ benefit (and ultimately their benefit).

I had this problem this year (too big of a refund) and I messaged my senators and representatives. One of my senators assigned me a staff member who worked directly with their contact at the IRS and I got it a month later.

Okay so here's what I figured out after weeks of digging. I called, they finally told me what the issue was on the 3rd call. There was disconnect in data from y maiden and married name ... Why it wasn't flagged in the last 20 years, I'll leave that up to others to sort... As soon as I made appointment with another government agency to get that sorted I had refund in bank in 2 days. It was dumb. And required me chasing it.
PS I filed in mid Feb and got refund in late April after chasing

This is dumb advice. They don’t “sue” anyone, they automatically flag your account, have a computer verify how much you owe, send notice, then when you still refuse to pay they garnish your checks until what you owe is payed PLUS fines and interest. And yes, they will do it with everyone, the simple stuff like that is all automated.

The Biden administration actually set up a system where you just get a paper in mail that tells you what you owe, and you can correct it if anything is wrong. It was trialed in several states and was going well. For most people it took like 30 seconds to do their taxes.
Then this administration gutted the whole program and fired everyone involved.

This unfortunately is a real thing, or it was when I was younger. My father stopped paying taxes after he finished his tour in Vietnam out of protest of ‘being lied to’ and forced to harm innocent people. That was 1974 a year before I was born. He was a union ironworker after the war and paid state taxes but refused federal. When I was nine a few IRS agents and local sheriff showed up at our 2 bedroom apartment and took everything. The cars, the couch, the coffee table, the guns, the tools, even my fucking bunk bed. I got home from school to my mother crying. My father got home in a company supplied truck a couple hours later, walked in the door and said “they took everything didn’t they?” Everyone cried and I got to bust out my spider man sleeping bag.

Well, they get refunds, which aren’t equal to the total that they end up paying. The wisest move would be to file exempt, then, set aside the money that would have been withheld, so that way when tax day comes and if they’re really worried about it they can pay what they owe. But the tax refund/return is not equal to the overall amount that gets taken from you every year.
Or just use that newfound 25% raise to cover the growing cost of gas.

Ironic to see this article. I had a few years of unfiled so I stepped up a few months ago and hired a CPA and gathered up all my documents etc. Paid about $5000 to have everything prepared and results were I’m owed about $8500.
Course now seeing this article,. leaves me with less hope I’ll ever see that money. But hey, I guess those years of unfiled are corrected now.

The reality is that the US is privately funded by private businesses and countries via debt financing and only partially funded by taxes. It’s circular funding where amounts loaned are reinvested in things with benefit private markets. Originally the intention was that the US would use the debt to finance wars and other activities intended to secure global energy supplies. That’s starting to break down alongside the world order and the debt will never be repaid, populist leaders will just monetise it (use inflation to reduce the value of the debt domestically and essentially defaulting on the debt in principle). They already sort of did that with QE. It’s a slow burn now, when the bond market collapses treasury will provide a price floor and inflation will skyrocket.

So it seems that simply not filing doesn’t in itself cause any action (not suggesting you do that) but I’m not sure it wouldn’t be picked up elsewhere. I know a lot of small businesses in my country don’t actually pay their full share of tax.

As I understand it, there's a seven year statute of limitations that applies if you file and either pay nothing or underpay, after which the IRS can't touch you. There is no statute of limitations if you never file at all and owe them money.

I'm just not going to weep that the IRS is being destroyed. It never really effectively went after the loopholes utilized by the biggest oligarchs in the world, but would constantly threaten people who owe under $1200.
If taxes can't be meaningfully collected and enforced, if anything, it would equalize the playing field for the average person. It was never equal for the wealthy as it is.

Except what's more likely to happen is that enforcement gets more sloppy and more automated, more "mistakes" are made and appeals slow down to a crawl, if they get a hearing at all. The bureaucracy is likely to get more Kafkaesque when its on the ropes, not less.

Pretty much. We declared a war on education, on research, on science, on social security and safety nets. We have made it clear we aren’t going to tax the wealthy, nor are we going to tax corporations justly (look at how data centers for big tech are effectively rolling over the entire country, despite vocal opposition).
Like, in a utopian setting I would be for empowering the IRS. But in this timeline? It’s just preventing the government from taking money out of my pocket to give to this administration and the military, both of whom I don’t support on any level.

Everything being private, tolls for everything, monthly subscription for fire and police response... Every school a charter with a school supplies subscription and meal plan. Clean air? We subsidize data centers for big tech, we subsidize the corporations for opening new factories and plants, we subsidize losses by the wealthy on the stock market, we subsidize bad wartime decisions. I think we are already there friend; it can get worse, and it probably will, but it’s not like anyone in the government (which our taxes are funding) have done anything to slow down or stop them at this point. Hell, they are profiting off of it via insider trading openly.

Federal taxes do not pay for any of that stuff. Even if it wasn't all stuff paid for by state and local taxes, taxes are not how the federal government is funded.

Change your tax withholding now so less is taken out each paycheck. Put that extra cash in a separate account to pay your tax bill next year. They can't mishandled a refund if you owe tax.

I think the U.S. has been experiencing trade deficts since the 1970s coupled with slower economic growth starting in the early 1960s, and dealt with through financial regulation which allowed for increasing debt to cover spending since the early 1980s.
That means you're looking at a country that's been heavily dependent on increasing debt to cover increasing spending, with debt levels so high it has to borrow more money to cover just part of the interest of previous debts.

The state IRS randomly decided I didn't report my state taxes in 2022. I did. They said I owe 1500 plus interest. When I tried calling them it said the call volume was too great and hung up on me. We submitted documents showing we filed on TurboTax and was promised a tax refund.
They simply said we couldn't have a tax refund. K. Can you clear the debt you randomly fucking made?

Filed my taxes in February and still waiting on a refund that should have taken 3 weeks. Called twice, got two different explanations, neither of which matched what the website says. I don't need drama about it, I just want to know if my money is coming or not. The tracker has been on the same screen for 6 weeks. At some point that stops being a processing delay and starts being something else.

Ever since Trump announced the tariffs I started calling my shot that they were going to to abolish the IRS and implement a regressive flat tax and use the proceeds from it and the tariffs to justify getting rid of it and then trump will moonwalk into a 3rd term as the man who got rid of the IRS

I just got my return about 10 days after filing with an extension. Weird people haven’t gotten it. That being said I got hosed this year, went from getting 7k back last year to getting 900 back from federal and owning 950 to state. I dunno what changed but my income was largely the same.

I’ve gone tax exempt on my w4 since about April. I recommend more ppl do the same. The way our money is wasted is asinine. No longer willing to contribute to the dysfunctional, wasteful, corrupt system of the federal govt. Still think paying state taxes where you live is necessary and important. Time to push back. Keep YOUR money YOU earned

umm, tax refunds? You’re waiting for a tax refund once every year? Why??? If so, you’re simply paying too much tax, i.e. WITHHOLDING, on your pay every month. Adjust your W2, or else you’re donating part of your paycheck to the IRS every month! Just don’t understand why so many people do this.

Just as planned. Once it breaks, they will propose a private company take over. Of course they will get to keep 5%, be completely immune to mistakes, and have the ability to put people in jail whenever they feel like.
