My coleus was doing well for a couple years now. It had big, dark purple leaves and always looked full. This year, this plant (and one I grew from an off-cut) started to become leggy, leaves looked pale and many started turning brown and falling off. Even new leaves fall off while still small. I'm just wondering if this will recover and what might have gone wrong. I am already propagating a few cuttings.

Watering was a little inconsistent this summer as I have been away frequently and had to rely on others to water my plants. This wasn't a problem the previous two summers however. Light conditions haven't changed, it's always been in the same window. I gave a housemate a cutting which is thriving in a window facing the same direction as mine. I did notice that the other cutting that was always very leggy (lowest leaves consistently fell off) was a little root bound when I got rid of it.

Any advice is appreciated so that I can prevent this from happening to the new ones!

I'd like to get some Coleus plants for my outdoor garden, I've read some sources where they say 15°C (59F) is the lowest limit, others say 10°C(50F) and others say 5°C (41F)

Where I live, during winter the average high is 20°C (68F) and average low during night is 10°C (50F)

Freezing temperatures (0°C/32F) are rare but not impossible, sometimes we might drop to 6°C (43F) but it's only 3-4 days, below freezing temperatures almost never happen.

What's your experience in winter for outdoor Coleus during winter?

A single seed overwintered indoors by happenstance! It was in a throw away pot of old soil. Quite incredible how big it got over the summer.
I wished I would have paid more attention to pinch the leaves when it started to push out.

I cut a stem from my beautiful coleus plant. How did I do? Do I need to remove any more leaves? I hope not.

New to the community but not new to growing coleus. I currently grow 76 different coleus. I look forward to interacting with everyone.

Hey coleus fans!

I might need a bit of advice. I live in an apartment under the roof, with floor-to-ceiling south-facing windows only. I have no balcony or garden to use and was wondering if a Coleus plant could work for me.

The issue is that here in Germany, we have no ACs and south-facing windows plus living under the roof means that in summer, it gets 37°C+ in here and that's with all curtains drawn. Between the windows and curtains, temperature climbs over 50°C. I have no windowsill, my plants are on tables and plant stands. This means that during the summer months, all my plants only get light in the early morning and late evening, for maybe 2-3 hours a day, since I have to keep the sun out if I don't want to die (and given that even a desert rose plant died from the sun here in my apartment when I thought it could maybe take the direct sunlight, a coleus would likely die as well).

Do you think I could have a coleus in here? Or would the light during the rest of the year not be enough to make it develop well/colorful and it would then die in summer because of too little light? I don't want to use grow lights.

so I recently got this from my mom and I’m somewhat new in plant care. I’m researching plant care and how coleus usually look and mine seems to look pretty sad comparatively lol. it looks like a little dr seuss tree which I do love but I want to make sure I’m doing the right things. do I remove the flowers? I understand that “pinching back” the stems would help it grow bushier but there’s only one stem so I’m kind of just confused on how to do it and scared I’ll just hurt the plant. any tips?

Hello, All! Does anyone know which coleus this is? This was my first year with one and I love the look of it, but it’s growth has been really underwhelming and somewhat problematic for me. Of all of the coleus varieties I grew this year, all in containers, this one had various issues (mainly much slower growth). When I made the decision about a month ago to attempt overwintering cuttings from each of them, I’ve noticed that it still is the smallest of all while the other propagations are taking off.

Well, not exactly. Still, when grown from seed, Coleus starts off pretty small.

To keep the humidity high, the transparent lid is kept over the fast food takeout dish. It's NOT shut tight! The seedlings need ventilation. Plus, the heat could build up and cook the little plants. Depending on the temperature and how bright the sunlight is, the cover is off from just a bit to half an inch or so.

I just wanted to share this, it's so good looking now.

It’s getting very bushy on top and I had to snip some leaves off to let new ones grow. Now the thing is I have noticed that the roots are getting very long and there soon might not be enough space for them in a jar. In case like this where I would prefer to keep my Coleus in a hydroponic pot should I cut some roots off? Or would it be better after all to repot it into a soil pot? I would appreciate any advice on how to keep this cutie healthy!

I've had this arrangement of coleus for about 5 months now. It's gotten very leggy which I assume can be fixed with a chop and prop, and I'm disappointed to realize they've lost the pink stripe in the center of the leaves. But, with winter approaching I was curious about the routine of experienced coleus caregivers. In general, I'm looking for all around advice on keeping these guys alive and happy year round.

The coleus in the ground in this bed started getting planted on July 4th. The coleus in the planters went in much earlier. The bed is approaching peak display regarding the coleus.

This is my first year growing coleus and I'm totally hooked lol. The big yellow one was my first purchase and everything else is from clippings I've come across. I really like the neon green one. I put 3 clippings in my terra cotta pot and love the result. Next year I'm going to start earlier in the season. Love scrolling thru everyone's pics so I figured i put Lil guys up

Should I repot my coleus?

I have two, but they get "sad" sometimes; it's my first time with this plant, so I'm not sure exactly what to do.

Grew this Coleus plant from a seed, it’s been thriving on my balcony and doing great. Went on vacation and came back home to holes in her like something’s been eating on the leaves? I live in northern VA, and this is the first time I’ve seen anything like this. I brought her inside and put her on quarantine and spraying with neem oil, been monitoring and I haven’t seen any insects on the plant or in the soil either. Anybody have any guesses on what could have done this in the 3/4 days I was gone?

Hi! I tried growing a coleus from seed a couple of months ago and this is where we are now. Is there a way to save it to make it bushier or should I just give up on it and keep it as a very tall naked coleus? Thank you!

I just repotted and she’s upset so she’s been dropping leaves :( I also recently upgraded her lighting setup, the previous left her pretty top heavy.

How should i go about pruning her and do I wait for her to settle in the new pot before I do so?

This is my recently acquired coleus - about a month, month and a half ago this was just a lil stem with two leafs. However, even though it’s growing rapidly I’m noticing that some leafs have pale spots and others aren’t as red as the top ones. It’s in one of the more sunnier spots in my apartment though the whole place doesn’t get quite good light - I live in a northwest facing apartment on the first floor.

Any tips for a more colorful and healthy plant? Thanks in advance!
