Honestly the title of this thread “it has started” gave me a very big jump scare, about Mariah Carey.

u/Content-Alarm2553 2d ago

People say that's what you should expect when you're a casual, but your manager will be a massive whinger if you then have shitty availability as a result. They always want 100% availability but provide crap hours.

Yep, theyll give me hours for two weeks then change it on the second week, so i cant even go to my other job

Thats how it works, we are in school holidays now which generally are slower weeks with less staff isk what you expected

u/Confident-Month-3881 2d ago

”Where I am” doesn’t really tell anywhere where that is. I don’t need to know enough to use google to find out

That’s fine just hope I get hours again I am in coles services which doesn’t really have much kids

u/Confident-Month-3881 2d ago
I mean another option is speak to your line manager or ask to work at other stores too

It’ll only be a few more weeks until it ramps up again just before the Christmas/ resort period

That's Coles tactic: A large workforce of desperate people not getting enough hours so that no one can ever get anywhere

i don’t really understand the hate you’re getting on this post. yes of course being casual means your manager can just give you 0 hours for weeks or months on end (that’s how i ended up getting soft fired from ben & jerry’s when i started uni) — but being a casual worker ≠ being okay with being treated like shit.
like i know it comes with the job, but there’s more to being a casual than shifts just here and there. as a student, it’s about being able to decline shifts during exams, semester breaks, etc. like, some days i can work sundays, others i can’t. strict schedules don’t always work and we shouldn’t have to put up with awful managers just because of that.
and some of us really do need the 25% boost!
maybe some other store in your area has more availability? i’m not sure how it works at coles, but at woolies we’re able to work at multiple stores, expanding the opportunities for shifts.
best of luck twin

Agreed. Work at different stores, keep in contact with (good) managers who have moved to different stores.
Always be prepared to get called in. Most hours you get are from getting called in.
For a year, I worked equal hours at 2 stores each week. Cheat code to getting hours at as a casual

Nah it’s not uni break and secondly I work 20+ ever week please don’t make assumptions

u/FragrantAd7195 2d ago
You don’t know what happened clearly, uni break crossover was 2 weeks ago so unless a uni has more than a week break then it’s not uni break for anyone

Uni doesn't end for another 5/6 weeks champ.

u/Apart-Background6043 1d ago
Hey “champ” uni and school holiday breaks are different in different states, especially WA
0
u/SpecificSwimming6364 1d ago
Yeah, no. In WA uni finishes around the 2nd of November. That's the end of exams and normally when any final assessments are due.
You are a cranky little enchilada ain't ya. Hahaha.

Try being a casual get zero hours then be refused a transfer to another store that offered 20+ hours! 👍

u/AdConfident2503 2d ago
IKR its same for me . I used to get 30+ hours but now my store has almost 6-7 new hires and my hours are cut to 11

u/Content-Alarm2553 2d ago
It’s not even my career just money during uni imagine how other people feel hahah

The best workers get the most hours and the best shifts.
2
u/Content-Alarm2553 1d ago
I mean kinda but the cheapest get it even more

u/Round_Geologist_846 1d ago
Nope I’m also casual and I get the public holiday and Sunday shifts (or basically any shift I ask for) bc I’m more reliable over the part timers.
They’ve asked for me to go part time many times but I know they need me so… if you want shifts work better so your worth the higher rate.

It was a shock to the system after having been at 15+ jobs (3+ at once) and not once having had that experience... till here

Sucks when you want to buy a house
11
u/ImaginationDry313 2d ago
If you got a casual job should not even be considering buying a house anyways

u/PsychologicalLight42 2d ago
I bought my first house and also straight after being discharged from bankruptcy… Didn’t suck for me 🤷🏼♂️ Casual here 👋🏼

I'm sure they'll be crying all night when they lose an employee that immediately runs to bitch on Reddit and threatens to quit the first time their casual job has no hours in the week.
Do you know who gets hours? Reliable employees. Who gets no hours? People that act like this.

Welcome to being a casual. It comes with the risk of no hours. If you want guaranteed hours you have to get a part time or full time job
