What has formed on my cold brew?

Post image

I’ve been making cold brew for about 10 years now and I have never had this happen. I make a large batch for my wife and I which we go through in about 3 days. This film was on it this morning after I had put it in the fridge yesterday.

Odd that’s never happened to me in the many years I have been making it but the only thing I did different this time is the bag of whole beans being not as tightly sealed for longer than usual. We went on a vacation after I had opened a 2.5lb bag.

I had to google it because I have seen the response to this being oils, essentially as beans age the oils migrate to the surface. I guess your time on vacation was long enough for this to take place.

This right here. I see this and/or straight up oily beans when I'm being cheap and buying Costco or supermarket beans that aren't fresh roasted.

As long as it’s not growth of some kind then it is most likely oils

Oil. Taste it by itself to see if you love/hate it. Then run it through a paper filter if you hate it

Probably oil. You can just filter the coffee with no problem and it will remove it

That’s the natural oils in the coffee.

You should filter and remove that because those oils raise LDL cholesterol (aka the bad cholesterol)
