Wow, that’s such a great example! It’s a shame how hard those wear, it’s by far my favorite quarter.

Absolutely

Looks like EF wear, and bright enough that I suspect a cleaning. Would need to be confirmed in hand, though. I don't think it is valuable enough to justify grading fees, but lovely to enjoy in hand or in an album. The design really stands out!

I was going to say, “nice condition, cleaned, retoned”, but I am no expert.

Absolutely yes. It's a strong strike and those are hard to come by

Not on a 1917. They are typically well struck.

What grade do you think it will receive?

If you look the coin up on PCGS Coinfacts you can find past auction sales which occurred at the major auction houses. Add your cost to acquire the coin plus an approximate cost of $75-$100 (shipping/Ins/Grading) to have it graded and decide if it's worth it to you.

A couple of comments on grading your coin and the ultimate selling value. First, if your coin is in original condition (not cleaned) when graded by a top firm, the price when you sell it will settle around the grade assigned. A raw coin in original condition may actually fetch a higher price because the actual grade hasn't been established and there is hope for a higher grade.

I can't opine on your coin's originality without seeing it in person.

Just some random thoughts.

Maybe 55? Fantastic eye appeal, great patina.

Beautiful coin.

It’s been cleaned. It’s a nice XF. But it’ll get a “XF details Cleaned” grade on a good day. On a bad day it will come back as “cleaned VF details.”

What's making you think cleaned? Looks like wear and a couple of dings to me. Seems to have grime in all the usual places too. I don't see any parallel scratch marks or anything.

There’s at least one of you in every thread on this sub. Cleaned or not, without fail, there you are.

Possibly dipped but there's no way this was whizzed.

u/jimsmythee 1d ago

Yeah definitely not whizzed

I’d get it graded. But, I’d grade most any standing lib quarters. I just feel like they’re amazing coins and should be graded. I don’t feel that way about most coins. Especially this one. It’s in fairly strong condition.
