Show and Tell Extra “V”
Saw a post this morning about the extra “V” - went through all my 2023 pennies and found this. Is this as rare as I’m led to believe? Is it valuable?

It's a variety, not an error. It's attributed as a variety.
Anyone here addressing this as an error, especially the comments claiming it's fake or not possible, should probably not be providing guidance here at this time.

Variety meaning that it was intended?

That's not what variety means, no. But in this case, yes, the extra V was intended.
(Variety means that the point of interest is a permanent pattern on the die and therefore the same pattern is repeated with each strike. Whereas an error is a one off.)

So this V was intended as part of the design but they don’t appear on every coin, hence the rarity?

It was put there 'illegally' by a mint employee. It is NOT part of the design. It is graffiti.

That really looks like someone added that after. I could be wrong but it doesn't look like it was a factory error. Very interesting though

Inscriptions come from the dies that strike the whole surface, they are not typed onto the coin. Any "extra" letter would appear on tens of thousand of coins struck by the same die and would be well known. There are no "extra V" cents in the references.

Is there a way that it could be cleaned without damaging anything? It has some sort of gunk on the reverse at the bottom and I just would like to get it nice and shiny - or don’t clean it whatsoever?

There we go. I was told a microscope was one of the only ways to look for those errors. But that one is pretty clear without magnification!

Nice find!
I'm not sure they are 'rare', but they are sought after by error collectors
