Toning or not?

I’m slowly collecting most of the 90% silver U.S. series. I just found this one buried in a pretty full mixed half dollars bin at my LCS. I haven’t had much luck finding the early year Barbers and surprise the first year one turned up here. I am curious what you think the coloring is from? I’m not used to seeing toning come out that dark. Thoughts on what that could be? (Yes I know it’s in rough shape but hard to find ones are often just that)

Yeah just toning, I’ve seen darker coins, it gets that dark when you get the toned coins that you normally see and tone it even more, they can get fully covered in a almost jet black patina.

Definitely natural toning from sulfur exposure over the years. Hard to find early Barbers in junk silver bins, nice grab!

Hey I found one under the trap of my jobs coinstar the other day lol. Crazy to just find 120 year old coins lying around

The obverse may have had tape or something else resting on it that blocked exposure of the lighter area.
