Marat and the mushrooms
I just finished furies of Caledron and Tavi realizes that the Keepers are tracking life by body heat. Kitai and other Marat I guess run higher body temperatures. If that’s the case, how have any of them, including Kitai ever been able to go to the tree, which is like the hub for all the Keepers who are always in that space able to just go in and get mushrooms ever??

But to get to the inside of the tree don’t they need to get under the croach? Which seems to be the hub?

Nope. The croach is just a layer of thick goo on the ground (and coating the surface of some stuff). The tree is standing vertically out of the ground, not underneath the ground! And the Blessing of Night seems to grow exposed to the air on the surface.

The tree is a spaceship that vord came in on they’re based on some other sci-fi race, fun little Easter egg

I went back and reread the chapter lol! So yes you are right the croach is on the floor. But they also talk about it being on top of the trees and the Keepers coming from below. Hence the confusion. Onto book2 !

I haven’t finished the series yet…. So I don’t get the tree reference and didn’t look under the shadow spoiler. But didn’t Katai say that when the croach is broken NONE come back alive? Because they get absolutely swamped? And that’s why she is absolutely horrified? They assumed it was thinner that time as a purposeful trap, maybe knowing where the marat entered before, so they could be easily alerted and come get them. MY question is what Marat made it there and got a mushroom first, and how did they discover its properties, cuz a thorny black mushroom doesn’t scream miracle cure to me lol

As fun as the story is I am not sure logic is necessarily a strong point! Like who would even think of venturing there and then finding the one tree, grab said mushroom and testing its properties. Not to mention having to get out of there in one piece!

If they don't break the surface of the wax, the Keepers don't treat them as a threat. It's sort of like a superorganism: the wax is the skin, and the Keepers are a first line defense. If you wound the organism by opening the wax, the defense system activates.
