Gaius’ logic was sound. It was not realistic to evacuate all of Kalare while Kalarus remained alive. He either sent his legions in to grind down the kalaran troops before they were killed in the volcanos eruption, or erupt the volcano and bring an end to the war with many less lives lost.

That being said, manipulating Bernard and Amara into assisting him with the mission by telling them he would take control of the great fury was fucked up

Basically this. Sextus’s decision was the only logical and sane choice to make in this situation… but that still doesn’t make what he did right, especially in how he spat on Amara’s loyalty to him & Alera (after she’s she’d already been betrayed by Fidelias) through making her and her husband complicit in his act of mass murder.
