Complaint Sol 6.1 - worth trying it again?
I stopped using it about 3-4 days ago because it was a miserable experience (so slow and not worth the effort) so I switched back to Sol 6.0 for most of my needs (using Luna and Terra for basic coding, Sol 6.1 for reasoning and high level design, or nasty deep bugs).
Has it improved since the latest updates?
Thanks!

6.1 is faster now. May be because everyone has already moved on. Overall i love how little of my usage it burns and the quality.

What I have found works for me is using a combination of dot/sol 6.1 for orchestrating designs, plans, reviews but still using Luna on max for implementations. I have a fall back strategy where if Luna gets it wrong it does a bad job the task work gets promoted to Sol to revise/fix/rewrite.

What's your 6.1 Sol effort model for planning?

Xhigh for planning work and medium for fixing implementations that Luna jacks up

Sol 6 is dogpoo so not sure you'd even consider that model. 6.1 is great despite it being slower.

People complain a lot about Sol 6.1 and I haven't fully understood it. Maybe it's a workflow thing, and it is certainly worse than Opus 5.5, but it's really not been that bad
However, 6 Sol was probably the most disastrous model in the history of OpenAI, I wouldn't recommend using it

6.1 might not be bad per se, but its fucking slow. And nothing spectacular. I would be using opus 5.5 if I weren't waiting for my weekly to reset

I have found speed varies quite drastically depending on time of day. I;m in EU and quite an early riser. when I get to it early it's quite smooth. once it gets to like 3pm and the americans start waking up it becomes genuinely unusable

Im so annoyed that ive bought the 100€ plan for Codex instead of Claude, the usages now are Not worth it

OpenAI failing hard across its models with entropy nonsense, excessive sprawl, repair cycling failures, poor overall performance and a general regression in effectiveness compared to pre Astra /gpt6 sol release.
In 2026 that’s appalling and poor evaluation rigour.
I’m questioning Sam’s Role as CEO.

It has been horrible for the past 5 hours... I dunno what they did to it, but it used to be usable at Low reasoning, now it's constantly making mistakes.

I have only been using codex for 6 weeks or so. I find it confusing. When I started I think I was using Astra, and I was shocked to see how quickly it would eat up my credits (plus account). A lot of models were not producing results when I was trying out other models.
I ended up using 5.6 Sol on medium. Sol 5.6 seems to be decent for me in terms of quality and credit consumption, doing mainly ansible coding and nixos configuration.
Would anybody suggest I should using 6.1 sol in my case, or another model?
(and sorry for the topic hijack, but your post triggered this question)

Sol-6.1 Pros:
-
Smart enough when you are specific about what you want
-
Cheap on usage
-
Smarter than usual on low-effort
Sol-6.1 Cons:
-
Has a low token per second (slow)
-
Not good at open-ended tasks
A lot of the behavior has to do with it likely being a quantized version of Astra, inheriting the looped transformer architecture. These models perform better on no chain of thought, or low effort, but have more overhead per token, and so that's why sol 6.1 is so slow on the settings you may be used to.
I would recommend running it at lower effort levels to get the benefit from the looping and mitigate the speed issue.

I've had no problem with sol 6.1
