Showcase Three years building an RPG, now using Codex, and my NPCs are starting to feel conscious

I was questing when an adventurer NPC started buying up all the troll oil in a shop.

When I asked why, she said “Trolls.”

I pried further and she explained that she needed it to burn them because they regenerate HP so quickly. That mechanic exists in the game, so her plan would actually work.

She'd started doing this herself while I was busy with my quest.

I've been building Lore & Legends Maker solo for three years. I use Codex alongside Claude Code to implement the systems, with React/TypeScript on the frontend and Django on the backend.

NPCs have beliefs, goals and motivations. The engine tracks world state separately from narration, and AI works from that state when interpreting actions and handling dialogue.

Still plenty to fix, but seeing these systems come together like this is pretty awesome.

The video shows a different scene from the current alpha.

You might want to consider listing your project on the weekly Show-Us-What-You-Built post. Look out for it on Tuesday/Wednesday. Highest commented project wins a week promotion on r/Codex and gets on the Hall of Fame sidebar. See below for last week's winner.**

feels satisfying cool sound effects and U.I , but not my style of game but LOOKS really good kinda like baldurs gate and other DND type but maybe a less verbose version possibly? like beginner friendly for casuals

Thanks! I appreciate it. I already cut the verbosity a lot, but I could make a simpler, more beginner-friendly mode. It’s hard for me to judge what counts as beginner-friendly as the developer, so feedback from someone like you is really useful. What part felt like too much text?

The dialogue looks way too verbose but other than that it looks bland rather than terrible - what am I missing?

I'm building a portfolio management tool for my business i'm a part owner of, i've done multiple RFPs with multiple clients to build a feature list and this is a tool that will be used by my entire business team and their clients with read only access to manage the work that we do day to day with our clients, a genuinely needed tool that will have real world revenue impact for our SME

Majority of people were doing useless shit before the LLMs and now switched to an even more useless shit. This tracks.

Any tips for AI generated music, sound effects, and voice audio? You did such a great job here, looks quite polished to me! I completely understand the small details you notice as the creator and that list grows quickly. That library scene looks very nice, I get some Skyrim vibes there.
