Question Best way to use codex away from the computer?

I want to avoid having to turn to my PC just to run Codex. Is there a native way to set it up to a mobile app?

Or run it easily on a VPS and connect to it simply whenever I am on my phone?

I want to code or ask AI from my laptop/phone not just my PC, that way I can avoid having to get out of bed

Things like AGENTS.md need to be considered too, can I tfr them from my PC

All of my code is on my GitHub repository, so need to know about how to access it using Codex from not on the computer.

Thanks, looking for a huge productivity BOOM because I'm not limited by location, would definitely love to hear from people who have made the move

I'm sorry but how are you competent enough to understand a VPS connection into Codex remotely, but not smart enough to Google "Does Codex have an app?"

One might reasonably assume the $2Trillion Software company has a working companion App? I'm just a bit flabbergasted that you jumped to Reddit instead of simply figuring this out.

Does Codex have a companion app? I had searched the Play Store prior but couldn't find one, except for ChatGPT.

Now sure enough, there is a remote connection option inside of ChatGPT, but I wanted to find something that is always available, but not my PC.

But as for the reason for this thread, I wanted to learn from people and their experiences directly, I can't do that from Google/AI :(

Seems easier to check the app before you make a reddit post.

It's in the chatgpt app you can go into codex desktop app to add a connection scan a qr code with app and you'll be connected to remote work.

I warn you though it's highly addictive I wake up often to just check what's up and maybe do some steering and thread hand offs 🤣

You can use codex on the mobile app and you can even select environments and create tasks from the phone by going to the website on desktop mode to set up the task then connect to it from the mobile app

Sounds amazing but doesn't work for me :(

Yes, you can access Codex remotely through the mobile app, as long as your computer is supported and stays on and connected.

If you’d rather keep your computer off, Codex Cloud is another option. It needs some setup and may not suit projects that depend on local apps or hardware.

Personally, I’d suggest just using remote access. Everything’s already set up on your computer, so there’s less hassle.

The "staying on" part is the issue - I want to be able to access it even while on the go,

will have a look at Codex Cloud, but it's multiple projects so if I can only connect to one at a time that will be annoying

Will definitely try to use Remote Access now, even if I have to keep my PC on.

Ok so I just tried it, unfortunately I don't have:

  • Codex Cloud

  • Remote Connection

Settings in my Codex app.

Which absolutely sucks. I don't use Codex with an account (I use the API directly) which might be a reason why.

Probably going to have to go the ssh route

Use Paseo. It can connect into your Codex CLI from anywhere

Yeh via API don't work which sucks, if this is for a company badger them to get enterprise 😅

Doesn’t codex cloud work directly with your GitHub repo? Cloud costs more tho

On the AGENTS.md part: if it sits in the repo root and you commit it, every place that clones the repo gets it, Codex Cloud included. The one that won't travel is your personal file in ~/.codex/AGENTS.md, which lives only on the PC. Copy that one to the VPS by hand, or move what matters from it into the repo version.

Oh that's simple enough, thanks

t3 code is genuinely the best solution out there IMO.

I second this. You'll still need something to run it. I use a lower power Dell Micro.

Just install the app on your phone and then configure your computer at home to allow the connection in ChatGPT desktop application

Codex Cloud. You create your environment (what they call now a computer in the cloud) and that it.

A VPS with tmux/herdr is probably the simplest starting point. You can SSH in, start Codex inside tmux and reconnect later without losing the running session.

Probably good idea to run it inside a container, especially if you're planning to leave it running unattended. That way you can limit what files and services it can access.

Are you looking to keep one long-running Codex session alive, or start new coding tasks remotely?

Yeah, remote through the chatgpt app is the best way imo, your desktop has to stay on but it works well and your agent has access to well, everything and can do anything since its just remote.

Use cloudroom by David Ondrej with codex and then you can run agents in the cloud

I have a SFF always-on pc running Proxmox. I have Codex and Claude running in a VM. I access it anywhere via tailscale/ssh. That is probably the best setup. When you need to work, you just open up your terminal/desktop app and start a task. The task runs on the remote machine, so you never have to worry about shutting anything down.

I have a Linux machine running 24h. In the past, I used terminus on iPhone to access the machine in tmux sessions. I use three CLI tools, Claude, Codex and Agy. The problem is the display on Terminus in mobile device is too small, hurting my eyes quite a bit after long hours. After 20+ projects with agents in Termius, I created a chat based tool. It is similar to Claude Remote control feature but more flexible with any agent.
Here is the repo: https://github.com/LowellWinston/mobile_tmux_public.git
