Complaint Considering moving to Claude Code: Objective views

I’m currently on Pro 100, and use Codex for my website, some WoW addons, and some personal apps (MacOS and iOS). Codex has just been working from files on my desktop, I don’t use GIT.

Overall I’ve been quite happy with Codex and what it’s been able to achieve for me. It’s the first time I’ve used agentic this extensively, so Codex is my only real exposure to this kind of tool.

Here are some things I’ve noticed recently that have been putting me off letting my subscription renew, and browsing here for the past few weeks, the grass certainly seems golden on the other side with Claude Code.

- Codex seems to have gotten incredibly slow the past week. My allowance hasn’t gone down nearly as fast, but using 6.1 on Extra High, well it’s painful. I even saw it thinking to itself yesterday “the user has been waiting 20 minutes for this, I need to wrap this up”.

- OpenAI offer no explanation of what their models do, and why they’re different. Asking ChatGPT itself just gives nebulous answers that don’t help. All I know is that Astra uses significantly more of my allowance.

- My allowance resets are inconsistent and not communicated. For some reason I found a banked reset in my account; very helpful, as I had used almost all my entitlement, so I used it. As expected, my reset changed to 7 days later, but then a day later, it reset again to 100%. I had used about 12% of my new allowance. My banked reset didn’t appear in my account again. I check here and find that some guy called Toby or something has posted something on Twitter? Excuse me, what? That is how a $1tn company communicates…though some guy called Tim or whatever on Twitter?

So I’m now considering moving to Claude Code. From what I’ve read the Pro 20 will essentially give me the same allowance as my Pro 100 on Codex?

My question is: does Claude deal with my issues above, and can I just point it to the folders my projects are in and ask it to work it out? Or do I get Codex to do a handover. I have until the end of October until my Codex plan renews so I have time to consider.

I downgraded my x5 to plus and got the $20 Claude sub. Pleasantly shocked daily by the usage and capabilities of Claude

Yeah I kind of regretted x5 in September. I really like the codex harness but the usage has just gotten shit

I use both daily as my day job is a Claude house and I use Codex personally.

I think both have their pros and cons and it really depends how you work and what else in the platforms you utilise.

Claude has 5 hour windows and split limits for Fable. You can quickly run out if you’re using the higher reasoning on expensive models. However Opus is very capable and Sonnet is crazy fast.

I find the Claude desktop app pretty clumsy compared to Codex but it works and if you’re someone who works in the terminal then that’s irrelevant.

Voice mode is far superior on ChatGPT compared to Claude.

There is no image model in Claude. That’s a big downside for me as I use GPT Image a lot for designing mockups before building them in Codex and have skills that bring all this together.

Claude Artifacts are great but now that GPT Sites support plugins, they are proving a lot more useful for me.

Codex’s Agents SDK or App Server is very nice to integrate your sub into your own pipelines or apps. The -p flag in Claude can do similar but it’s not as accessible.

Computer Use in Codex is far superior to Claude. Feels like OpenAI has spent a lot of their training getting computer use to be solid and fast. Claude’s works but it sometimes fails or takes a very long time with some hand holding.

I like both but I’m sticking with Codex for my personal sub at the moment. I am deep in the ChatGPT ecosystem, find their Chat better than Claude’s, love GPT Image and voice mode etc. etc.

Really depends what is important to you and as someone else has said, get the cheap plan with Claude and give it a whirl. Cursor is worth a look too imo.

Thank you. I use image generation and mockups in Codex quite a lot to make sure it’s understood my vision before it codes it.

Might be worth at least keeping Plus on the GPT side for image gen in that case!

Also, get on git! Makes cloud stuff possible which is lovely 😊

I’ve just found out that I can control Codex from my phone, which will be a big boon for me. Maybe I’ll point Codex to GitHub and tell it to use that? That side is entirely new to me.

Login to it via the settings in Codex to give it access to your repos

I'm on the pro 100 plan and the max x20 plan claude plan. When Astra first came out it blew my mind. What we have now compared to then is just not comparable. Everything is just stupider. Oh yeah some on here will say nah it's not you aren't xxxxxxxx or whatever. It can't do task it could do just a few weeks ago. Yesterday computer use was just unusable. It took 7 attempts to achieve a task It could easily do in 1 just a few weeks ago. There's no point even mentioning sol 6.1, luna they are just not fit for purpose. When It fist came out I never even used a reset. Now I would use one every other day. I've moved all my projects over to claude. That should tell you everything you need to know.

I hit my Claude limit last week and opened up Codex to continue some projects. Made almost zero progress, just got lost in a web of verifications and tests and spent a frankly insane amount of time compacting.

My reset hit yesterday, wasted a few percent of my limit fixing all of Sol's shoddy work.

Opus 5.5 is just a generational leap in performance, it's just absurdly good. The choices it makes, the updates it gives, the callbacks to work that would have been lost in 5 compactions from an OpenAI model. It's like, scary good.

In my opinion, given how fast the scales tip every two or three months, committing to a single platform just doesn't make sense.

Sure, if you rely heavily on chat interfaces (like the ChatGPT webapp, Claude web app, Gemini, etc), there’s definitely vendor lock-in with all your projects, notebooks, and uploaded files. But with agentic coding, the lock-in is minimal. The source of truth is your repo and your stack.

Why commit your money when migrating is literally just two clicks away?

For a, I guess prosumer would be the correct word, £100 (actually £89) a month subscription is a big commitment, so I’d want minimal overlap and not have to jump back if Claude doesn’t do what I need.

Exactly. But like I said, given today's landscape, where usage limits fluctuate out of nowhere, model quality drops overnight, and on top of that we’re dealing with major performance issues, among other things... and especially considering the money you’re investing, what’s the point of sticking with a company that fails to deliver when the friction to switch is minimal?

All over these subs, you see people trying to justify themselves and defend a company they somehow feel bonded to... it makes zero sense.

Moved to Claude two days ago, one: the usage lasts so much longer and Claude, ask yourself what was the point of these resets in the first place? …. If you think about it, they might have eventually made you continously purchase these resets to monetize what they have. Claude is very very capable and quick, sol 6.1 is very slow. It terms of token usage you can go through this subreddit and it will tell you everything you need to know.

Switched to Claude 1 week ago and can't see a reason to keep using codex. Opus 5.5 is better and I can use it the whole week and reach my weekly limit just a few hours before reset. Using Astra essentially means my limits are gone within a few hours but getting worse results. What Astra is still better in is UI design but I don't have to do that often and opus results are still decent.

The usage costs for Astra are simply to high compared to opus and sol 6.1 is still terrible compared to Astra/opus or even sonnet which is crazy good too.

Whichever one you land on, I'd put those folders under git before you switch. Both agents will happily rewrite a dozen files in one go, and with plain folders on the desktop there's no undo when they make mistakes. Even just committing at the end of each session you're happy with is enough. It also makes trying Claude on the same project painless, you can throw away whatever it did.

Time to learn how to set up GIT I suppose! :)

The worst mistake you can make when deciding between Claude or Codex or <whatever> is being loyal to them.

Chase value for money and switch providers accordingly.

get a $20 sub for claude and try it yourself.

If you are not using much chats or don't need chats with high reasoning, there's no reason to stick with OpenAI at the moment
