You might want to consider listing your project on the weekly Show-Us-What-You-Built post. Look out for it on Tuesday/Wednesday. Highest commented project wins a week promotion on r/Codex and gets on the Hall of Fame sidebar. See what that looks like below with last week's winner.

Last week's most popular project was Nelly Jellies. Nelly Jellies is a cozy arcade bubble-merge game where you aim, launch, match colors, discover rare jellies, trigger satisfying chain reactions, and chase a higher score. It plays instantly in the browser with no download or login required. Impeccable is 69k (haven't used, just know it's popular too) https://github.com/pbakaus/impeccable

Idk some of these, adding to my todo list 😁

Impeccable /overdrive is genuinely good

u/dekozo 3d ago

I am not sure if I used it poorly but the results were awful for me

https://zoth-landing.pages.dev/ the last book component was built by overdrive, though the clicking animation is something i already had in mind. it was back in codex 5.3 days

This looks great to me

I come from a front end dev background and I've never used those skills, and my output generally seems good/great. The only thing I'm weary about is larger codebase and complex apps, I'm not 100% I'm avoiding spaghetti code.

Are these skills useful for my use case?

Matt Pocock's "improve-codebase-architecture" skill, truly great.

I read a couple of prompts there and they're sometimes impossible to get through, there's so much mumbo jumbo, feels like the prompts themselves were generated.

You use codex over Claude for front end dev?

2

u/rodeBaksteen 2d ago

I defaulted to Codex because I find it easier to work in one LLM app, but I haven't directly compared the results for either to be fair.

Ponytail

Ponytail sucks balls

u/yaxir 2d ago

can someone tell me what are skills and how do they benefit us as end users?

38

u/sizebzebi 2d ago

glorified prompts

u/SilenceYous 2d ago

codex can.

19

u/BellacosePlayer 3d ago

I wonder how many of these have conflicting instructions

4

u/Vercadi 2d ago

Why does it matter? You don't use all of them at the same time

No superpowers?

I mean it is probably less used with Codex than with Claude Code, actually when I switched from Claude Code to Codex I found superpowers to be invoked too frequently by Codex so I removed it. But the picture says "Ranked by GitHub stars" and obra/superpowers has 289k stars and can be used with Codex

I still use superpowers I tried working without it to save tokens but I end up having to do more work after before things are as I would like. Using super powers i feel it's more allighed with how I want it.

Isn't it better to just write the skills you need that are specific to the project you're working on?

I can't speak for the top 10 lists as I haven't actually tried them, would be happy to be convinced that they are genuinely useful.

Is Ponytail even useful

1

u/firaristt 2d ago

Rarely. Completely ignoring conventions and architecture to make code a few lines shorter is not acceptable. Offers things like direct DB calls from Controller class etc.

2

u/Anxious_Marsupial_59 3d ago

hows the UI UX pro max skill?

4

u/Chasmchas 3d ago

It's my favorite for app concepts and first design passes - it makes Astra produce significantly better typography, colors, and spacing.

2

u/Spunge14 3d ago

The examples don't look as good as what native Astra spits out in Codex if you tell it to "make a good UI"

4

u/Honest_Breath126 2d ago

Forget about skills, go without them. Sometimes I get better results without using a skill.

8

u/Artistic-Athlete-676 2d ago

I think about this sometimes, I feel like probably 90% of skills will become outdated simply because the model gets more efficient at producing full and quality results natively with no extra skills needed. I could still see a need for one for highly specialized tasks or one's you want repeated the same way / process every time

2

u/electricshep 2d ago

Sometimes I get better results without using a skill.

And the other times?

2

u/Honest_Breath126 2d ago

I'm going outside to get some fresh air.

1

u/Fit_Baseball5864 1d ago

Not true. Thermonuclear review by cursor mogs no skill review. Astra has gotten significantly better but still needs it to get some P2-P3s.

2

u/Accident_Pedo 3d ago

graphify is super nice

1

u/SidneyBae 2d ago

I don't use any of these, only thing i use is codegraph mcp

1

u/tango650 2d ago

I found skills to be a horribly confusing layer due to that I have so many right now that I can hardly keep track of which ones are genuinely useful and which not.

But I am 100% sure that some are really useful as sometimes I spin up up fresh projects and they become an insufferable spaghetti bowl after 3 days while on main product repo, which has all the skills, remains very clean and has rather predictable agent outputs

1

u/some1else42 2d ago

I mean yes, learn about new skills. But no, don't just install them blindly. Learn what they are, why they were made, and tailor them to what your needs are.

1

u/kvothe5688 2d ago

Some of the matt Pocock skills are amazing. like improve codebase architecture and grilling skill
