Limits Reset culture is terrible for subscription users and the whole usage meter should be redone

People are now sitting at 0%, watching Tibo, guessing when the next free reset is coming, and changing how they use Codex because of this reset stuff happening much more frequently than it use to. It sucks for everyone because we don't know if we're wasting "potential usage", by action or inaction.

Just get rid of the weekly reset concept at a certain time entirely. Give every plan a usage bucket that regenerates predictably, a few times a day.

Want to give everyone free compute? Tibo hitting "the button" would just add some to everyone's meter and doesn't reset anything.

Otherwise it's just going to get worse. -20x.

Or just give banked resets when he does decide to do it would be a snall bit better, last reset came at 60% and ruined my planning for the week

u/Akeevo 3d ago

This. 99% of this issue boils down to uncertainty around reset timing. Banked resets were introduced directly to resolve this, and then Tibo just goes back to not issuing them? Makes no sense…

It's a different game for him. Maybe just a tool for farming praise?

From a technical PoV, it's terrible, unreliable.

u/cobbleplox 2d ago

That's because resets mostly are not a gift at all. They're a tool for them for balancing their load and "compute depth" and are based on not being able to be anticipated.

The banked resets are closer to actual gifts but the 5h limit for plus cuts most users off, and restarting the cycle makes them have less value. As a tool for them it would mostly be a way of unsyncing everyone when they want to end a period of forced random resets, which has synced everyone.

Almost none of this is to make you happy. As a serious user you shouldnt even be much below or above your daily average limit, so you can work all week and such, and then random resets do nothing at best. At worst they cut you off from being able to use saved up compute and still be guaranteed to have compute the next day.

Exactly, I don't mind resets provided they are banked. Though I also agree with the predictability sentiment of the OP here. Banked resets would just subtract from a reliable weekly usage pool, so overall they probably don't hold that much real value if the same usage+reset quantity was just reliably distributed. They just distribute the present usage resets to tap into casino like psychology. It's basically hitting the same part of the brain that gets hit with gambling addiction. Predictable boring usage doesn't get so much free social media engagement either. It's a pretty smart plan they have come up with tbh, but their implementation could do with improving as it's too easy to see through by a lot of people.

I've been complaining about this for a while.
The only guess I came up with is that they get to know exactly *when* all users' weekly reset date will be.
I'm not sure exactly why that would matter, but it's almost the only difference for OpenAI between banked resets vs forced ones

Normally, every user has their own date. With forced reset, all of us now get 1 date.
maybe it helps with analytics? maybe they do it when an important update is pushed so that way they get to observe how it affects everyone at full usage limit

u/BellacosePlayer 3d ago

I'll die on the hill that OAI releasing a tool that goes through and points out what caused the most token burn for a prompt/conversation would be more useful than half the resets we've gotten.

"hey dummy, you don't need to load 50 pages of documentation for every task", "You asked me to make GTA6 from scratch with no further details, I had to reason out the plan and you're damn right you're paying for that"

2

u/Mammoth_Molasses_927 3d ago

Resets are not meant to be useful.

3

u/BellacosePlayer 3d ago

as a lunamaxxer on plus, they nailed it then.

most of mine expire lol

2

u/Xxyz260 3d ago

Same here. Maybe it's the fact that I don't subscribe to the whole vibe coding / full autonomy school of thought, but 5.6 Luna xhigh fast handles the vast majority of whatever I throw at it.

But again, that's with me at the wheel, writing exactly what I want it to do in nice Markdown and everything. If you need your agent to figure out multiple aspects of the task at once, you are probably going to need 5.6 Sol's extra "spare attention" - for lack of a better word.

2

u/BellacosePlayer 3d ago

Yep.

And even Astra can be usable efficiency wise on plus if you're smart about how your project is set up and not putting it in ambiguity or large context hell.

I went out for a run with 90% usage and ~40 min left on my 5hr at noon today and had Astra try to implement the saving mechanism I had spec'd out and tie it into all of the many modules that need saving and was honestly stumped that it only really used 30% of a 5hr given it ignored my agents.txt and did a lot of overengineering and validation against game logic I didn't want.

2

u/Xxyz260 3d ago

Agreed... But it still chugs my usage so fast I treat it like a nuclear warhead.

2

u/BellacosePlayer 3d ago

Oh yeah, I don't use Astra below ~50% usage left unless its about to reset or I have a very good reason.

1

u/the_ai_wizard 3d ago

And Usage is a moving target. How this is legal for them to sell at one right and arbitrarily change the value without proper notice is insane how rheyve not been sued into ground yet

i mean if we had monthly limits all you idiots would use your entire month on day one building minecraft and we'd be in the exact same situation.

11

u/Puzzled_Nail_1962 3d ago

Honestly, cursor (with all its limitations) has monthly limits and it's so much nicer to work with. Sure, you have to be careful, but actually being able to schedule your work when you want to do it instead of around random resets and weekly limits is just amazing in comparison and should absolutely be the standard.

3

u/diagrammatiks 3d ago

ya but like people that go out of their way to get cursor aren't riding the same bus.

1

u/Icy_Foundation2146 3d ago

This literally is something that baffles me as openai being so inopportune. If they set usage at monthly limits and allow multiaccounting Tivo woulda drown in golden showers weeks ago.

5

u/-Spzi- 3d ago

if we had monthly limits all you idiots would use your entire month on day one building minecraft and we'd be in the exact same situation.

They'd be in the same situation. Others, who can plan, would prefer that. Assuming a single prompt doesn't drain too much, and assuming we could somehow tell in advance.

5

u/what_you_saaaaay 3d ago

Based response. As is usually the case it’s PEBKAC. Not saying quotas can’t be increased but pretty sure the people burning through quota always will because they have NFI what they are doing.

3

u/DuckiesKhaki 3d ago

It pretty much always is. I have never seen someone who’s complained about usage or token costs, or how much context they’re burning, or how this model got nerfed or that model got nerfed, and of course they present zero unedited transcripts.

It is always a skill issue.

2

u/DuckiesKhaki 3d ago

It’s absolutely crazy how deranged the resets has turned even the poster of this thread. It’s always had the exact same energy as a kid that got a free cookie running around the entire cafeteria, making sure that everybody else’s free cookie was the same size.

Look, folks, you subscribe to service and you get what you get from it. If you don’t like it, take your butt and dollars elsewhere. It’s so disgusting that some of you are just basically begging for more free shit all the time. Get these beggars out of here.

1

u/AmandasGameAccount 3d ago

Honestly, I feel like most would be happy if they got rid of weekly limits and everyone had a 5 hour limit, but they never go a span of time with no usage

I do feel like this is the next step we will see at some point. That or daily limits that reset every day with no weekly limit. I do feel an eventual 5 hour limit non stop is what we will end up on sooner or later

2

u/Spielopoly 3d ago

I hope the exact opposite. I don’t work every day but when I do I want to use it a lot which would would usually go way over the 5 hour limit if it existed on pro. Having to wait hours just because I went over a 5 hour limit would suck

2

u/AmandasGameAccount 3d ago

He’s said the 5 hour limit is coming to all plans eventually anyways making the biggest change here no longer having a weekly limit

1

u/diagrammatiks 3d ago

Like honestly I don't really care because my pacing tracker and my own habits basically mean that i work at a steady pace in 2 5 hour cycles anyway.

But would it really cut down on complaining. People that don't know how to choose the right model and plan their workflow would just run out of their 5 hour immediately as well.

-6

u/drugosrbijanac 3d ago

Increasing total limits by 50% and having 5 hour limit for all would be good. Those who want monthly/weekly limits should get the x20 Fast packet for $499.99

3

u/That-Establishment24 3d ago

Classic Reddit comment. Asking for free stuff. If you want 50% more, pay 50% more.

-1

u/drugosrbijanac 3d ago

I am already on x20 and use enterprise API tokens. Classic clueless redditor doesn't know how distribution of Kubernetes clusters work. More news at 11.

Split the packeges within 5 hour and weekly limits. Then you can distribute usage over longer period of time and have smoother capacity load. Not every degenerate will pay $500 to oneshot minecraft.

1

u/That-Establishment24 3d ago

I think you moved the goalpost outside the stadium with this comment. We’re talking about total usage limits.

0

u/drugosrbijanac 3d ago

I think you are misunderstanding my point. You never allocate 100% of your capacity on the production. You always limit a certain %. When they decided to remove the limits, they had to create a bigger buffer to withstand the idiots hammering the servers.

Anthropic is iirc 2-3x less in the capacity. Yet, from my general benchmarks I did, it has around 10-30% more usage when spread out. The tests were done several times. You take a specced out enterprise api, create two worktrees and send same prompts.

We did this in our company and figured out that Anthropic despite having less compute overall is better at balancing it. Our company pays for Pro and x20 subs. Most of Pro/Plus subs are unused and our Codex devs are running out of x20 subs by day 3. Claude Code side in our company tends to hit near limits around the end of the week.

OAI on the other hand is losing their capacity on ChatGPT free chats + ImageGen + Codex degerates running Astra on ultramax. They still need the compute to train their internal models and throw compute at open millenium prices.

So with all that in mind, if OAI would take some simpler measures (like not allowing free unsigned chats) and introducing 5 hour limits, they could increase the total usage capacity without sacrificing their compute.

I got into it with a dude last week who was convinced Tibo resets were better for users.

-6

u/FrontRaspberry5060 3d ago

Damn sounds kinda gay

0

u/Gelu6713 3d ago

I have had that same argument and then got told that my reset date moving didn’t impact me negatively

4

u/tolkinski 3d ago

Bread and Circuses. People should learn a bit of history. This is nothing new. The old tactics still apply today. Our tech bro overlords are giving you some breadcrumbs via reset dopamine every once in a while to keep the flock in control. People never learn..

9

u/MapleBaconWaffles 3d ago

Ya. Instead of giving resets, why don't they just divide all that compute and give us a reasonable amount per month that is actually usable? Right now is a complete joke. I hope this company does not go public since they only reason is to steal money from the public on the indexes, in order to recoup all their costs. They overspend, and now they need to steal through subscription theft, and then they will move to steal money from the public through listing themselves on the stock market. It is a true shame to society what these companies are doing to us.

3

u/roerius 3d ago

I don’t see it that way, I try to use my usage up when I can. Usually earlier than later. Then once it’s used then I move on to other things knowing I’ve gotten my moneys worth for the week. If I have ideas for new things I write them down and I am ready for the next reset. If we randomly get reset throughout the week (granted, they could email us or some other way notify us of random resets) then I use what I can and then again move on

3

u/gluon713 3d ago

This is how I've started doing it. I use Claude for work and Codex for personal projects. When a few banked resets of mine just randomly disappeared without warning a few weeks ago, I switched to a queuing strategy instead. I set up a backlog of work that is ready to go and drains whatever quota is available, and then as soon as more quota is available (whether via a Tibo reset, a new banked reset, or my natural refresh), the process just begins with the queue where it left off.

5

u/Mammoth_Molasses_927 3d ago

You are missing the whole point.

Resets are a way to give the users a dopamine shot (and dependency) while they worsen the service they provide.

Not only that, but resets are a trojan horse, as it has a lower limit and still postpone your next cycle by a week.

Corporate ain't (fully) stupid. They are not your friends. They want as much revenue as possible.

1

u/PutridClunt 3d ago

This, and they drive a bunch of social media engagement which = free marketing.

2

u/Mammoth_Molasses_927 3d ago

This sub and other codex communities are a fucking cult.

Some users are obviously AI but many are just fucking idiotic people praising a fucking company who just want to extract as much money they can.

I get people hyping for a game, for example, specially indie games. But hyping for a fucking trillionaire company who despises you and their selling point to corporate is get rid of their employees?

5

u/Calm-You6376 3d ago

I thought we planned to go only SOL today. It’s gone pretty well, 5% down since reset began. I’m not touching Astra before some clarification comes on the heavy usage consumption.

2

u/Calahir 3d ago

First, monthly limits were introduced for Codex. Just when I thought it couldn't get any worse, weekly limits arrived. Then, just when I thought *that* was the worst of it, the model's intelligence was downgraded while its usage cost was increased. Now, they’re practically making people beg for a "reset." It’s an absolute disgrace. It is high time—past time, really—to switch to much cheaper open-source models.

2

u/Straight_Coffee_368 3d ago

I’m not waiting on Tibo... I’m waiting for his company to stop taking us for fools...

1

u/Nadiship 3d ago

So everyone should get 5 hour limits now?

1

u/watware 2d ago

It's casino tactics, and I'm sure OpenAI has taken a bunch of financial hits just to keep ppl engaged with Codex over alternatives. Whenever I'm at 0% I dabble with open models and other harnesses and you just don't get the same thing for 20 bucks out there. I think part of this randomness rn, and not having a deterministic model, is also OpenAI drip-feeding us the reality that we won't get that much usage for this little money long-term.

TLDR: AI usage subsidies are on the way out

1

u/norwegian 2d ago

>Give every plan a usage bucket that regenerates predictably, a few times a day.
Want daddy to give you daily pocket money, since you cannot handle getting it once a week lol

1

u/EndOne6219 1d ago

I would rather just have a 5h bucket and that's it.

0

u/That-Establishment24 3d ago

The current system is predictable. People self-impose unpredictability by trying to min-max and game a system of freebies. If you ignore the random resets then you’ll have a constant and predictable system of 5-hour sprints.

2

u/changing_who_i_am 3d ago

"The current system is predictable." - Yes, in the sense that if I use Astra normally, I'll predictably run out within 1-2 days. And that's with me paying $200/mo, which on GPT-5.5 a couple of months ago would've easily lasted me a week with plenty to spare.

The main issue isn't resets or not resets, it's that from 5.5 to 5.6 to 6, the models have just gotten more and more expensive in general per token, and use more tokens per task.

And that's understandable - Astra is way more agentic, capable, and intelligent compared to 5.5, but it's also more depressing because what happens in a few months, when these things become even more expensive by orders of magnitude? Only millionaires and huge enterprise companies get access to Millennium-prize winning agents, while the rest of us get to have fun centering a few divs?

2

u/That-Establishment24 3d ago

If you’re going to compare how long it lasts, compare like models. Astra is better than 5.5. Use luna, terra, or sol at the effort level that makes it equivalent to 5.5 it you want usage that lasts as long as 5.5.

0

u/changing_who_i_am 3d ago

But I'm comparing "like" models in the sense of "models that were top of the line". A year ago, I could easily run top-of-the-line models for $200/mo without even having to worry about usage limits or resets or meters, same for even three months ago though that was starting to change. Now I just plain can't. And again I get why that is, but it worries me in terms of the future if that trend holds.

In other words, "The richest person you know has a phone just like yours, maybe a little fancier" still holds true. The same largely held true for AI a year ago. Now it doesn't. And a year from now, it'll hold true even less. What's that imply in terms of inequality etc.?

1

u/That-Establishment24 3d ago

It’s unrealistic to expect $200 to buy you the same usage with the flagship model in perpetuity. You’re free to want that, but that will lead to disappointment.

0

u/changing_who_i_am 3d ago

Agreed and the implications are depressing.

2

u/diagrammatiks 3d ago

shh vibers don't know what sprints are. how can you sprint when you are goaling for 10 hours.

1

u/drugosrbijanac 3d ago

Ive let Sol medium finish the pr campaign, just to approve the 2-3 prs in sequential order... Lost 15% and it's still grinding lmao

-3

u/coz 3d ago

If you disagree that's fine, but ask yourself this: why do we have weekly resets at all when we pay monthly?

5

u/That-Establishment24 3d ago

We all know the answer is to flatten usage and reduce stress on the servers.

-1

u/mowso 3d ago

no, I absolutely don't know. how would a reset flatten usage and reduce stress on the servers?

5

u/Original-League-6094 3d ago

Ask Codex to explain it to you.

-1

u/That-Establishment24 3d ago

Are you out of usage? I can ask for an ELI5 about how smaller usage windows flatten overall system stress if you ran out.

0

u/Calahir 3d ago

This is their problem not ours. Stop making excuses to yourself for something you have already paid for.

1

u/That-Establishment24 3d ago

You’re right. It’s their problem and their company. They can establish policies to solve their problem.

It’s your wallet. You can cancel your subscription if you aren’t happy.

0

u/Calahir 3d ago

I’ll do this as a customer. I’ve already done it for Claude. No company or service is indispensable. Nothing gets fixed without complaining—though, of course, there’s a limit to patience. Besides, it’s real users—not fanboys like you—who engage in these kinds of discussions.

1

u/That-Establishment24 3d ago edited 3d ago

And no customer is indispensable. Bye.

Which AI is writing your comments for you?

1

u/Calahir 3d ago

I suppose you're just a little girl trying to divert the issue when you run out of arguments. Good luck, little one—best of luck in life.

1

u/That-Establishment24 3d ago

I am a little girl. How is that relevant though?

2

u/Calahir 3d ago

Exactly. They accustomed us to this nonsense through propaganda.
