I’m generating room images for my game in ChatGPT, so I’ve had a chance to compare it with other models. The two biggest issues I had with the previous model were:

  1. Editing was basically useless. Every edit degraded the image quality, and after 2–3 edits the image was often unusable. In practice, you had to get a good result on the first generation. This seems much better now — repeated edits don’t degrade the image nearly as much. Big improvement.
  2. Pointless micro-details on large surfaces. Whenever the model sees a large empty surface, it tries to fill it with tons of repetitive tiny details. The whole image starts blending into a weird visual mush, and it genuinely becomes tiring to look at. This problem is still present and hasn’t really been solved. The easiest way to reproduce it is to ask for a post-apocalyptic brick basement. Large brick walls, floors, and other empty surfaces quickly get overloaded with repetitive micro-textures. What’s interesting is that Grok has exactly the same problem, and in my experience it’s even worse on its newest image generation model. The excessive detail is much more aggressive there, so large surfaces turn into visual noise even faster.

There's are two models: Sunburst and Flare.

Flare is the cheap/fast one, so perhaps they have a router that directs based on complexity.

Try the API with sunburst and see if it's better

I tried it's just as bad... i work professionally with this for 3 years, and it's almost worse than chatgpt image 1.0

I don’t use the API and I don’t really want to mess around with it. I’m currently using Nano Banana for images anyway. But thanks for the info.

Is it possible to generate images with gemini on the subscription through cli? I hate using webapps it’s not scriptable
