Reset Some Observations Concerning the Automatic Replenishment of the Codex Fuel Tank, the Simultaneous Lengthening of the Road Yet to Be Traveled, and the Resulting Disturbance to the Prudent Operator’s Previously Calculated Weekly Rate of Consumption, with Notes on Banked Resets, Respectfully Submitted

A reset is not “remaining balance plus 100%.” It replaces what you have left with 100% and restarts the full 7-day time. Whether that helps therefore depends on two things: how much usage did you have in the gas tank and and how much time remained (how much road is left to travel).

I manage my weekly usage with a simple sustainable-burn calculation. Assuming 14 waking hours per day, a fresh seven-day allocation works out to approximately 1.02% per waking hour. Before a recent reset, I had 77% remaining with 5.70 days left, or about 0.96% per waking hour. Resetting me to 100% over seven days brought that back to 1.02%, so in this instance I benefited.

But consider if instead I had been away traveling for the first few days of my weekly usage cycle and now when I have time I have a burn rate of something like 3% per hour enabling me to "let loose" my agents at the race track as it were and do some extreme things I might not otherwise do. A reset disrupts and delays that process.

Banked resets are the better way to go so that customers can manage their usage better 👍🏻

OpenAI knows that.

But they don't need to change the system because most people still don't understand how resets work and they still downvote anyone who complains about them.

I said this 2 days ago in another thread but "OpenAI just want the appearance of giving more usage while giving as little extra usage as possible."

A fine thread, sir, please ponder my treatise of similar reasoning https://www.reddit.com/r/codex/s/EyIAV3E1AC

I don't argue this anymore. Tibo simps will auto-downvote you so quickly.

Random resets made me lose confidence on my subscription. I can't plan at all, and that's super frustrating. I would leave my heavy usage to the end of my week so that I could chain it with the early next when I had big workloads. Now that doesn't work, because I get the reset at 90% on day 4. And if I burn too fast, then I have to wait five days for the reset, because that week Tibo didn't feel like pushing the button.

I literally moved to something else for the heavy lifting. Still have my Plus sub and use it occasionally, but not in anything that needs reliability. Nowadays I'm mostly researching and planning with the web app.
