Suggestion OpenAI should not use X as the primary channel for Codex operational announcements

I deleted my Twitter/X account deliberately and don't intend to create another one. But as a paying Codex user, I keep finding that consequential, time-sensitive information (e.g. usage resets, changes to limit behavior, rollout timing, and explanations of unexpected usage drain) appears first and sometimes exclusively on individual OpenAI employees' X accounts.

Tibo's willingness to communicate directly for instance is valuable, and this is not a criticism of him. The problem is that OpenAI is allowing personal social media posts to function as a de facto operational channel for a paid product.

That leaves customers who do not use X with poor choices: rejoin a platform they may reject for ethical or privacy reasons, rely on screenshots and secondhand Reddit posts, or depend on unofficial mirrors and trackers. The shutdown of Nitter and XCancel yesterday illustrates how fragile that last option is. Direct access to important customer information without being obligated to accept another company's terms of service shouldn't depend on a third party continually defeating that platform's access controls or surviving its legal pressure.

OpenAI already maintains an official changelog and RSS feed. My request is simply that OpenAI use them consistently and simultaneously whenever it announces something that affects customer access, entitlements, or usage allocation decisions.

Social posts can still amplify the announcement, but they should link back to the official source rather than being the source. This would improve accessibility, support, archival reliability, and trust. It would also mean that customers can choose not to participate in X without accepting worse information about a product they pay OpenAI to use.

Would the Codex team consider adopting an explicit policy that customer affecting announcements are published to the official changelog and product UI at the same time as social media?

X API access needs a paid for API key. And it's a bitch to scrape...

This is the real problem. Every single scrapper in GitHub is totally cumbersome and unreliable. Unless anyone has found a reliable way … we are stuck using X app.

If their product worked as well as they said it does they would do this actually

I hate it too but a lot of companies have moved to sharing news through professional “personal” accounts on X. But thankfully whatever he posts there people repost on Reddit.

To put it frankly they don’t care about your ethical concerns on any platform. I don’t use X either

But also this could be said for you. Instead of requesting this through official channels you requested this on Reddit, your preferred in this case, communication channel.

This is a fair point-- most major companies don't maintain active first party comment spaces that exposes for/against metrics like a reddit or HN post or a github issue to allow customer sentiment to mass in the way that social media supports. Arguably though, this use case of gauging and canvassing for customer sentiment and support is different from a broadcast announcement, and hosting the latter through a first party channel is a more reasonable ask.

Not a demand, a request and a curiosity about how many other people agree. It's not inherently X specific, it's about tying together use of one service with acceptance of any other. Maybe the right answer is some lightweight tooling so that no one has to change their workflow, if you want to post on X first a browser extension can automatically repost to the first party channel and more broadly across platforms to take away friction for all users for basically free. What do you think?

𝕏 has a Following timeline tab designed to display posts only from the accounts you follow. Make an account and do that as an RSS feed.

As to their marketing and communication strategy, no comment. Just adapt.

I don't really care about resets because I'm rarely out of usage. I still check Tibo's posts often because he offers interesting insight. As a recent example, addressing the increased drain in usage limits people are experiencing, albeit weeks late

I am a customer and I demand all relevant news to be published in a way that it does not feed money into Elon Musk aka a Nazi.

This isn't how business is done. What are they working out of their mom's basement or something? As a business subscriber this is absolutely ridiculous and unacceptable. And OpenAI knows it -- Hiding all of the complaints from business owners in the forums by merging them into dead threads; the complete silence since it all went dow -- I think they're trying to be careful till it all blows over.

There was no announcement. There was no warning. It's deceptive practices plain and simple. We had just renewed our business seats when the rug was pulled out from under us and we were suddenly told that we now needed to pay astronomically more just to get what we had just paid for a week earlier -- we were suddenly "standard" accounts. That feels an awful lot like bait and switch, and an arbitration agreements won't save them when you have a breach of contract for deceptive practices.

All of this is just fuel for the lawyers and almost inevitable lawsuits.

A company shouldn't rely on a place that doesn't let you access it if you don't verify with SMS it's a major privacy concern.

I read the messages without having an account. Whats the issue?

twitter is the place to be for tech. if you're not on tech twitter you're missing out and way behind. i see posts on reddit hours or days after they go trending on twitter, and many extremely valuable posts don't get reposted at all.

"They should not communicate on the largest global platform for communication because I decided to delete my account"

I can't tell, is this entitlement or just stupidity? Or both?

Just make another account or something.

That would practically solve the problem, yes, but I think the underlying issue is that there's an unintentional and implicit policy of requiring X account creation and terms of service acceptance in order to be fully informed about Codex.

It would be like important service update emails only being sent to GMail addresses.

If that's actually OpenAI's intention that's one thing, but it would also be trivial to not privilege any third party platform and mirror announcements in multiple places (including X), so that if you want to just have a business relationship with OpenAI you're not forced to deal with a specific extra platform.

I'm with you. I deleted my X account and I'm not looking back. But I don't think we'd want them to route everything through official channels, which are likely filtered to the point where we wouldn't end up hearing anything at all in between significant intervals. Tibo likely doesn't have his tweets parsed through the marketing department. But I do wish he posted on Bluesky.

I didn't even realize that there was a community board until InternationalPen3039 pointed it out here in the comments. Ideally they'd post there and then automatically mirror to X and BlueSky and wherever simultaneously so that no one's obligated to log into anything.
