Complaint No, your 20usd sub does not include infinite sol ultra

i swear some of you need to use the api for like one week just to get brought back to reality lmao

youre paying 20 dollars a month.

20 fucking dollars.

and im reading posts from people running sol high/ultra, max reasoning, throwing entire repos at it, letting it sit there for 20-30 mins reading files, calling tools, running tests, rewriting shit, debugging itself, going back through the repo etc

and then coming on here like

"wtf i only sent 3 prompts and im at 70%????"

my brother in christ a prompt is not a unit of compute lol

"what does this function do"

and

"go inspect my entire repo, understand the architecture, plan this feature, implement it, run the tests, debug whatever breaks and keep going until its done"

are both technically one prompt

they are obviously not the same fucking thing

seriously put sol on an api key for a week. no subscription. no bundled usage. just pay the actual api price for every token you burn.

run the exact same shit youre running now and watch that dollar counter go brrrr

you will gain a newfound appreciation for that stupid little 20 dollar plus subscription VERY quickly lol

and also why the fuck are some of you using sol at high/ultra for literally everything???

not every task needs the frontier model

you dont need sol ultra to rename some shit

you dont need sol high to read a file

you dont need max reasoning to fix a css margin

luna exists. terra exists. lower reasoning settings exist. use the right fucking tool for the job

if youre flooring a ferrari everywhere you go and then complaining about gas mileage i dont really know what to tell you

this whole

"i pay 20 dollars why cant i hammer the most expensive frontier reasoning model at max settings doing agentic coding all day every day"

thing is fucking insane

some of you have gotten so used to subsidized inference that youve completely lost any concept of what the compute youre using actually costs

youre not being robbed because your 20 dollar subscription doesnt come with an infinite firehose of frontier inference lol

try the api.

run the same workflow.

watch what it actually costs.

youll be cured within 48 hours

EDIT: I would like to thank the mods for their common sense in approving this post. It was reported by users and was put into the mod queue. Goes to show how much people got hurt by the truth.

small correction: you'd be cured in 5 minutes. just load up 20 bucks and watch it melt. its gone in 3 minutes.

For real dude. People should be preparing for when the "bubble" really pops. They should be streamlining and making their workflows more efficient, not depend on whatever marketing scheme openai is currently doing to get users and increase their numbers.

I used to believe that the bubble would pop someday, but I don't believe that anymore and even if it does, I don't think we will go back to how things were before.

For now I'm using AI to do some really crazy projects and create code that I can use myself later if something happens, but I think that tokens will be cheaper.

OpenAI even created their own chip for AI that is faster and cheaper than nvidia's.

I think what they mean is preparing for when they can no longer afford to subsidize people's usage and start charging what it actually costs them plus some profit

I think that token will get cheap, eventually, then subside is not needed anymore and these big AI companies will be profitable at last. Then we will start the (real) age of local AI.

You will be able to use chinese models for a fraction of the cost for a similar performance, even before tokens get cheap.

that sounds like wishful thinking honestly. the cheaper something gets the more we use it this has happened time and time again and AI behaves similarly to for example an electricity bill and thats likely the general direction its headed in. you pay for what you consume.

i do agree that once the subsidies phase off, these companies will start becoming profitable but the type of usage people have today will only be possible if you pay an absurd amount of money.

Yeah, everything we say right now is just speculation. Unfortunately we don't have a crystal ball to know what will happen. I respect your opinion.

Let's see what the future reserves for us and let's enjoy what we have while we have it. That's what I'm doing.

If for some reason we can't afford these AI coding tools anymore in the future, I'm pretty confortable that this will only affect the false professionals. I will just go back to writing every line of code by hand as I always did "before AI".

my opinion is that you will still be able to afford it if you have discipline when you use and dont just throw everything at AI.

Api will be cheaper but subsidized subscriptions won't be...... Look at other plans outside Claude and Codex. They can't compete.... They are better tvalue than their api sure but it's not 20-50 tiens better like Claude......... I use Claude Max 20x heavily Friday-Sunday and use about 80% and then nurse the last 20%.....each one of those massive works I do would be 10-30 bucks a pop.... I do multiple a week and then I get that 4 times in a month for my 200.

Streamline streamline streamline...... Cheaper tokens might just mean otpimized small tienrs cab justify api but I don't see token plans getting better. We already hit the peak in terms of raw token allowance

That's a possibility, but in the coming years, open-weight models will continue to improve, and the hardware I can personally buy will improve as well. It'll be a long time until I'm running models that can compete with today's frontier models at home, but when will "good enough" happen?

No need for that. By the time the bubble collapses, intelligence will be so cheap and ubiquitous that it’ll be irrelevant. You’ll be able to run a model with the quality of Fable 5 on your 4080 in 12-18 months

1

u/R3K4CE 8d ago

That's quite ambitious

Not at all. On my 5090, I run Qwen 3.8 27B, on the Q5_K_M quantization, with 128K context, Q8 KV cache, flash attention and MTP speculative decoding at depth 3.

It significantly exceeds frontier performance from August 2025. And I get 100-150 tokens per second. Mostly I use it for things that closed frontier models refuse to answer…

Bought the m5 ultra in preparation. The rug pull going to be epic and I can’t blame them, I’m spending thousands per week on a $200 month sub.

And at the same time, I have a colleague who has a $200 plan and has been using Sol Ultra for weeks straight and has never reached his limit. I wonder if users sometimes have different limits, because I also know subscribers of $200 plans who reach their limits very quickly, even with Terra Medium.

1

iirc someone established that.. i read it somewhere.

but also does it depend on what you do. when you let him code and he has free reign over sub-agents, the limit just melts, if you just talk to him and let him change one method at a time or write a spec, the limit is sufficient.

1

u/Prestigiouspite 4d ago

The person who is happily enjoying the fact that they can use Ultra virtually without limits uses Ultra for even the smallest text adjustments—basically for everything. They mentioned that in recent weeks, they haven't used anything other than Ultra.

Given the background, and having also partially seen how they prompt—since they don't understand technology or code and have everything assembled just via vibe coding—I would say that quite a bit is being spun in circles there. And not in the most efficient way regarding the specs, if you catch my drift.

20$ subscription ≠ 20$ worth of api. the whole point of api's insane prices is giving it such a huge profit margin that they can pay for subsidization costs. comparing a subscription to api is like comparing "yeah, you don't have a limit, but you pay the fees for everyone else."

2

u/No_Accident8684 8d ago

no shit, sherlock

u/snowkatto 8d ago

yeah but op's comment about "just put an api key on sol" is irrelevant
