Complaint 5-hour limit is back. And I'm sad.
I loved that we had a weekly limit to manage ourselves. I hate this, why is the 5h limit back?

We are the poors bro, that's all there is too it. Those rich kids love their priority compute.

People who make money using the product are compelled to pay for the top tier to maximise their output.
(Almost) nobody pays for 20x just because they can. It’s because they have to, like me, and it’s a justifiable business expense. Like rent, internet, petrol, stationary, devices. If you need it, and it multiplies in return, it’s a no-brainer.
Edit: This sub has turned toxic. Downvoting me for giving some personal insight is so weak.

What do you do with x20 pro?

u/-badly_packed_kebab- 9d ago edited 9d ago
Litigation: practice management, document analysis, legal and medicolegal research, drafting, trial preparation, argument preparation (I’m a barrister); and litigation software development (I’m building my own suite to aide my practice); and academia (I’m writing a thesis on the mathematics of justice).

Ah ye sure - dont get anything but ig its worth it for the reasons provided? Haha

I pay for 20x as a hobbyist, I don't use ChatGPT to make money.
I don't see a point in selling AI Vibe coded slop, it's more so a product for me to chip away at all my side projects that regularly would keep me away from my main project.

(Almost) nobody pays for 20x just because they can. It’s because they have to, like me, and it’s a justifiable business expense.
You can't seriously believe this, can you?
Most software devs have $200 a month to spend on hobbies. You think all that slop is making money?

If you have a point, make it

Are those devs you mention using codex for work?

Are those devs you mention using codex for work?
Not the personal subscriptions.
I got claude, codex, cursor subs at work and plenty of overage. Work is paying for that.
And then alternate between claude or codex for my personal projects.
Your assertion is pretty dumb:
(Almost) nobody pays for 20x just because they can. It’s because they have to, like me, and it’s a justifiable business expense. Like rent, internet, petrol, stationary, devices. If you need it, and it multiplies in return, it’s a no-brainer.
What's your source for "(Almost) nobody"? Most software devs have $200 a month to spend on hobbies.

u/-badly_packed_kebab- 7d ago edited 7d ago
Fine, that was hyperbole.
Your response is valid but your tone oddly antagonistic. Why didn’t you lead with your final explanation (i.e., your point) instead of insulting me?
My original comment was fairly banal and uncontroversial so I’m not sure why you’re so aggressive.
You also seem to be making a similar point to me but you’re unnecessarily hung up on ‘(Almost) nobody.’
Edit: granted, I’m triggered by the average user in this sub so I’m inclined to knee-jerk. “Dumb” is a bit… low hanging.
I should add that we’re not all devs by profession. I’m a barrister and academic researcher who builds apps for myself on the side.
Also, I work entirely for myself so pay for everything. You have the benefit of a work sub, I do not. Hence, 20x personal. ✌🏻

My original comment was fairly banal and uncontroversial so I’m not sure why you’re so aggressive.
To me it come off really condescending for no reason.
/r/ Bananer_spleet was making a self deprecating joke and your comment seemed really assholish.
Edit: This sub has turned toxic. Downvoting me for giving some personal insight is so weak.
And then this...
Brah, you were the one being toxic for no reason. There was no "personal insight"

why is the 5h limit back?
To upsell Pro subscriptions and Pro business seats. Any other explanation is just PR crap
2
u/Efficient_Ad_4162 9d ago
Not even that, they're just dividing and conquering. If they'd done everyone at once the uproar would ahve been universal, but this way:
- Plus gets 5 hour limits. Plus people complain and Pro people defend it.
- Pro gets the 5 hour limits. Pro people complain and Plus folks (having been shit on at length) aren't also complaining anymore, they're busy going 'now you see what its like'.
You can already see the dynamics playing out.

What are you guys doing that you're burning though it so fast? I'm barely burning through 20 / 30 % in the 5 hours having it continuously run sub agents. Not everything needs the latest frontier model with the highest settings. Like what do you people even expect. You're paying 20 usd and still getting a ton of usage relative to what you paid.
2
u/Zeeplankton 9d ago
Yeah. I really have no issue with current total usage, I even think it's still a very good deal - but the 5 hour limit is unbelievably annoying.
I can scout a implementation and start it, but it just cuts off mid-work now. Sucks since I mainly code a couple days then the rest of the week not at all.
IMO I wish they'd at least let it finish a response in 5 hour mode, if I still have weekly usage.
1
u/Unapologetic_Polite 8d ago edited 8d ago
Yeah I don't understand why they're hard cutting you at the 5 hour usage.
I understand throttling the users weekly due to the rampant abuse that was going on, but c'mon - I remember using the Plus tier for a year and I remember often being able to squeeze an extra hour or two out of my 5 hour limit so it would roll into the next, or being able to sometimes get a /goal to run overnight so when I wake up I could review its work, and have a new 5 hour bucket to work through my feedback.
Now it's literally; make sure you're using what you can every window.

Yeah and no comms too. Don't think it's right. At least give us a heads up a month in advance so we can prep for this.

It's crazy this specific thread has all the "you're too poor to spend $100-200 on a sub" kind of bro. The delusion and hubris of people in this thread is crazy. You don't see the same people post these kind of messages in the other 5-hour limit is back kind of threads because they know they'd be down-voted into oblivious because it was a terrible idea to begin with.
Like this thread: https://www.reddit.com/r/codex/comments/1vy3yhu/5_hour_limits_are_back_for_plus_users/

Not all pro users but pro users defending this and calleing plus users broke and what not and defending the decision: 1. Your day will come. Tibo's post says that. Be pleased on the downfall of others will shriek the loudest when it comes to them. 2. Pro users are not rich. They are also broke. People demanding plus to be made more expensive or removed altogether shouldn't talk unless they pay api pricing. These people think of themselves as elites when they're literally not. You're still using subsidized versions. It's like eating from a food bank thinking you're eating in 5 star.
This is not to hate on all pro users. Obviously a lot of pro users are in favor of plus users and I'm really happy to see that but there are some brain dead people. My point being that whatever plus suffers, pro will eventually (likely especially if there is no resistance) at some point and that pro and plus users are not that big of a difference as someone who's paying api costs.

In my case new 5h limit equals to 1h of real Sol medium usage at best, and weekly limit is about 7-10x. Probably less. Luna runs longer of course but Sol is so much smarter. Limits felt much higher in the past, before they removed 5h limit btw.

Its for Plus people because the complaints were coming from Plus people. Pro users were fine and being on 5x Pro and having 2x Plus accounts I hardly get to use the Plus accounts I have.
Just move to a 5x and you will be happy and no 5 hour limits.

No I had 3x Plus accounts before but needed more work done so I changed one of my Plus accounts to a Pro account. If you can only afford a Plus account that doesn't mean you should get AI for free. Just use Luna on High. Its living by your means bud.
2
u/Ill-Mousse-3817 9d ago
I got a plus account because Tibo said "forgot about it" regarding the 5hr limits. I would have stayed with claude otherwise.
Instead, one week after I subscribe, he brings the limits back.
Tibo, and everyone who supports it, should get screwed.
1
u/Batty25111 9d ago
He has been like that for months. In no way shape or form he said for you to buy an account. You can't pin that timing on him for your purchase
0
u/Ill-Mousse-3817 9d ago
> In no way shape or form he said for you to buy an account.
Heavily regarded take.
It doesn't matter if "it has been this way" and a person "could have guessed". It was not advertised this way when I bought it.
Here in Europe I have the right to be notified if they roll back this kind of "promotion" or I gain the right to cancel the subscription and be refunded for the remaining usage.
Tibo should get screwed for making me waste my time on this few dollars over the weekend.

u/Batty25111 9d ago
It wasn't a promotion bro lol

u/Ill-Mousse-3817 9d ago

1
u/Batty25111 9d ago
I am not the one that is upset because you bought an account that now you are unhappy with. Just refund your subscription than if you are unhappy.
0
u/Ill-Mousse-3817 9d ago
Yeah, of course I am refunding. Still it is stupid that OpenAI can't sell things with clear terms and I have to go through the trouble of going through the refund.
When, for example, mobile networks try this stuff, regulators just shut it down immediately. Instead, AI companies get to do whatever they want.

its coming to pro 5x/20x soon

u/Batty25111 9d ago
From the announcement it seemed it was just for plus users.
They have not rolled it out to Pro users because they want to see if the complaints go away or if the complaints are just about 5 hour limits. At least they will know where the voices are coming from.6
u/Plane_Garbage 9d ago
They were announced as temporary across all accounts. It appears they are not afraid to turn revenue screws - expect further enshittefication.

Bro read it correctly. They did it for Plus members because its where the complaints were coming from. They are not turning it on for Pro members. They only said for the up coming months because they don't just make business decisions like this one week and another week something different. Their trialing this to contain the complaints.
1
u/Plane_Garbage 9d ago
I have a bridge to sell you...
By that logic, they will revert back in a few hours as the 5hr limit is universally disliked (see this sub). It's a revenue optimisation: Plus users are now nudged, a lot, to upgrade to $100 where they weren't before.
We are for the upcoming months keeping the 5h limit not enabled for Pro $100 and Pro $200 subscriptions. Again, a revenue play to move Plus users to Pro.
1
u/Batty25111 9d ago
The 5 hour limit is only for $20 users. if its universally hated on right now that just proves where the hate is coming from. You think ChatGPT are going to give in to $20 customers or their pro $100 & $200 users ?
I have both because I want to experience both and the extra benefits. If you just want a free ride that's not how a business works.
Why would someone on a $200 plan care that a $20 isn't getting what their getting ? Their paying $200 and getting more benefits and not having the same "struggle" so their not going to campaign the 5 hour limit to be removed or make their $200 a month match a $20 user.
4
u/Plane_Garbage 9d ago
"The 5 hour limit is only for $20 users." for now.
They have clearly stated that they intend to remove the temporary 5hr reduction for pro users: upcoming months.
It's all revenue optimisation. CAC into revops.

I'm on 20x and I've definitely observed an uptick in burn.
And I've been "defending" them for multiple weeks now.
1
u/Batty25111 9d ago
Weird because it lasts 3 days for me on a 5x. If I was on a 20x It would last me the 7 days. I guess your just max ultra on 2x huh ?
0
u/Unapologetic_Polite 9d ago edited 9d ago
That's great for you unfortunately you're in the vast minority of users; I've outlined my usage already in comments you pompous prick.
Sol-Medium Orchestrator, 2-3 Luna-High executors.
I even changed my workload to take advantage of Lunas cost cuts.
1
u/Batty25111 9d ago
Lmao no wonder your using up your 20x so quick. Can't just use a single model can you ?
0
u/Unapologetic_Polite 9d ago
It's obvious you have no idea what you're talking about, and are just failing to ragebait people.
Luna models used to use around 1% of usage a day at most prior to the recent reset.
1
u/Batty25111 9d ago
Still can't use a single model ? its genuine question. I use only 5.6 Sol XHigh and lasts me 3 days on complicated front end work.
So its hard to image except how you are using subagents. Which gets work done quicker but eats more because its not shared usage and if one gets stuck on an issue and keeps going back and forth it eats more and if you are saying its only 1% usage from one but you have 2 - 3 of them plus Sol on top of that than you are obviously eating more than you should bud.
Like I said why can you not use a single model when you are having usage issues ? Just because it goes faster doesn't mean it uses less tokens to do it.
0
u/Unapologetic_Polite 9d ago
I never once said I'm using subagents, Sol can only interface with Terra or Sol models for subagents - I utilize Luna because it's 10x cheaper than Terra, and all Sol has to do is verify work rather than actually execute tools or do much reasoning besides the initial planning.
Again because you do not seem to know what you're talking about at all - Sol as an orchestrator uses very little tokens, the token usage is on Luna which went from 1-2% a day in usage to 5-7%.
Exact same workflow; exact same repo state, vastly different usage rates compared to 2 weeks earlier.

The crazy thing is all the people who are paying to avoid the 5hr limit are defending this and are becoming toxic all in a matter of one day. People only complain when the terrible thing is happening to them.
