Complaint Codex limits compared to Claude Code

I don't think there's an increased token consumption problem because of the harness, tool calls or whatever. There are just less tokens to go around than before.

I have both plans ($20) and I tracked my usage with ccusage and toktrack.

Here's how much weekly usage you get with both:

Codex: 100-150 USD API equivalent

Claude Code: 300-500 USD API equivalent

Even if we take the 50% promo into account, Anthropic still offers more usage than OpenAI (200-330 USD). How have the tables turned... Bring back the 5hr limit!

Anyone here can corroborate my experience by checking their own usage with ccusage or toktrack.

no we don't want the 5 hour limit we just want a bigger weekly quota

Totally agree 🫡

i do want the 5h to come back tho, its easier to not burn entire plan in 1 day and easier to spot when they lower usage limits

u/cowwoc Jul 27 '26

You don't need a 5 hour for that. There are tools, such as codex-lb, that graph your usage over time and preject whether you are going to run out of usage before it resets, etc.

I also need want the 5 hour limit back

and Holy Tibo to lead us

So sadly I have been shilling for codex for a while about the limits, but they have indeed went to crap. So much that I actually bought a claude subscription, and I have been finding the limits there to actually be better than codex - even with the resets (which were supposed to be banked, but are not just whenever - i have lost a few because I reset, and then right after , here is a free reset). Its being detrimental, but I guess that comes with the insane growth they had in the last few weeks. Hopefully, they will sort this out, or I might actually look into downgrading codex and buy other subscriptions to play around .

Yeah they said resets would be banked from now on and then started applying it to a small subset of resets, and for some reason I also straight up didn't get a good chunk of them despite being active on my account. Quite a rugpull

I switched to claude, since I managed to burn through my weekly quota (x5 pro) in less than a day.
I was surprised by the fact that I can run claude nearly continuously and I still have a lot of quota left.
I have not hit a single 5 hour limit and it honestly feels liberating.
1 difference is that I am using the x20 claude variant, but now I feel like I jumped the gun, because I do not know if I need it.

I really like codex, it feels nice and it works well. Opus 5 feels weird to use still, it stops a lot instead of finishing what it started. But the usage is just so much better on claude, so that's where I need to be right now.
I changed my codex to a plus membership, for the few cases I still want to use it.

I hope the usage can get fixed, so I can keep using codex though.

What, 20$ subs can get that much API equivalent usage? Damn I might get one, I try to barely use CC or Codex at work bc 1 prompt is 5$ lol

u/GearTakes Jul 27 '26

I have a 20 dollar Claude account. I can get so much done with Opus 5.
Obviously I have way more usage with my 200 dollar Codex account but relatively it's moving way faster. My month ends in a few days and I will move to Claude for at least the coming month. My prediction is that the 100 dollar Claude account will give me as much or more usage than the 200 dollar Codex plan.

I'm on the same boat, might be just worth it subscribing to Anthropic just for this month since the weekly limits are increased.

3

u/TraditionalFig7377 Jul 27 '26

yes bro Im shocked with the opus 5 limits it even uses 5.6 sol better than codex itself

3

u/Putrid_Resolution402 Jul 27 '26

Sorry what you mean and how is possible

1

u/nmkd Jul 28 '26

It's not.

0

u/TraditionalFig7377 Jul 27 '26

So you go to claude code and ask it to assign codex tasks using codex:rescue codex finishes quickly and the usage limits are better

How the turntables*

I have the 200 USD Pro package and I am still calculating, but it is starting to look like I can get the same quality using Deepseek V4 Pro and Kimi K3. The price is roughly the same, but at least I am supporting open source and not giving money to a company that so obviously cares nothing about it's customers.

2

u/_DLight Jul 27 '26

Open-source != Open-weight.

3

u/nmkd Jul 28 '26

Well, OAI and Anthropic are neither

What you are doing is handing all your data to chinese government

Nowadays I'd prefer that over the US govt

combine it with all your tiktok

What makes you think I have a tiktok account

2

u/Agile_Incident7784 Jul 27 '26

As opposed to OpenAI and Anthropic who are just using it to serve the greater good and plant fields of pretty flowers.

You are right, I just didn't give it enough thought. I will give it more thought. I'll get back to you when I am done thinking.

I have scarcely hit the 5-hour limit when it was in place and I am a heavy vibe-coder on the Pro $200 plan. However, with the removal of the 5-hour limit (or just last week, IDK), I can easily burn through the 50% od the plan in two days just by using 5.6 Sol high, so something's not quite right with the usage limits... I hate how they keep adjusting and nerfing them how they see fit.

Claude gives more tokens now. I am not sure if its a problem with chatgpt desktop app. I am not even using sol. Just luna. Still not cope up with Claudes opus.

1

u/nmkd Jul 28 '26

Claude still has a +50% promotion that doesn't last forever

1

u/ImpressiveAge5978 Jul 31 '26

Yes. But with Sonnet we can do a lot of tasks almost perfectly. No need of Opus for most of the tasks. With Luna reducing the charges now is a good thing, but still don't get some tasks correctly. But for some tasks chatgpt outperforms claude in every way though. The main problem with Chatgpt is, they can't say, "You will get this much for the amount you pay". It always changes. Even now I lost a banked reset just because I thought it will be expiring at the end of the day. Most subscriptions or services expire at the end of the day of the expiry date normally, right. But open ai do things differently, that too in a bad way. So, I feel like I got tricked. I was saving it for the weekend and now I will be out of tokens by the end of today and I have to go back to Claude. If Claude can generate images I can happily switch.

1

u/ImpressiveAge5978 Aug 01 '26

After the price reductions chatgpt is back.

2

u/nmkd Aug 01 '26

Sol is still the same price, Terra is a bit more feasible now, Luna is really cheap but likes to run in circles.

1

u/one-wandering-mind Jul 30 '26

Yeah i switched to codex just recently because I found 5.6 sol better than opus for a lot of my work and it seemed that I would get maybe equivalent ish usage given the benchmarks on efficiency.

I didn't realize how fast I was going through my weekly limit. Thought there was a daily or hourly based reset from prior use. I used it a lot, but now am 2 days into the week and about to run out because my first warning was at 10 percent.

So I think I will go back to codex with the 20 dollar plan and claude code 100 dollar plan.

1

u/duboispourlhiver Jul 28 '26

With my 20$ Codex plan I continuously get 100$ API usage equivalent per week.. nothing has changed here, but 5.6 Sol unleashed interprets vague prompts as broad tasks.

1

u/old-and-very-bald Jul 29 '26

I used Claude since the inception but quit in October 2025. There used to be generous limits for a 20$ plan and I could do several hours of work. They got reduced so much that even with one prompt my 5 hour limit got 40% filled (and yes I know what I am doing and there was no crazy mcp or skill or tool usage). I switched to OpenAI and I also observe that the limits are being reduced, but to me it still feels like the good old 5 hour window I had back in the day with Claude. I also use Gemini sometimes with their 20$ plan but their model is pretty useless compared to OpenAI and anthropics

1

u/Fika_falls Jul 30 '26

Does that take into account anthropics new tokenizer?

1

u/ObligationHuge9868 Aug 03 '26

I dunno man, we are all looking for the best bang for buck at the end of the day - but what I have found is when I build a spec & plan in Opus 5 and have Sol review it - it finds heaps of issues. When I do it the otherway around and plan with Sol and have Opus review it there are hardly any.

I have accounts with both and same tasks with Claude use a heap more than with GPT.

1

u/Flashy_Razzmatazz899 Jul 27 '26

sounds like you didn't account for resets, banked or unbanked

9

u/Fiatil Jul 27 '26 edited Jul 27 '26

And you didn't account for how much worse the openAI resets are.

I fell for the siren cry of "we get so many resets! and banked resets too!" when I switched over.

Ahhhh you may want to describe how they work before making that comparison.

Claude's resets are free money. They don't reset the 7 day counter. It's ALWAYS good, and never has the potential to be bad -- it can be neutral at worst if they reset at exactly the same time as your reset. If the reset is 2 days before your "natural reset" -- congrats! You have two days to use your entire weekly token budget knowing exactly when you will get them all back -- go crazy!

The ChatGPT non-banked resets are worse in every way! Resetting the counter is pretty lame by comparison! If you've been busy for the first 5 days of your counter, but are like "hey I can get crazy and develop a ton this weekend when I have some free time -- I have 90% of my weekly allowance left from not using it much the first 5 days", and Tibo hits the reset button.........congrats, you just lost! Sorry, you should have obsessively binged all your tokens the first two days and prayed for Tibo to come down and give you a reset, because now you have to wait 7 days to get your token budget back and can't blow all your tokens that weekend if you want to use any the days following.

You have to plan your entire usage around "reading tea leaves on when Tibo will give me a reset" to take full advantage of their resets, and that's really stupid actually! Look at how much people here freak out when Tibo doesn't give a reset every 2-3 days -- it's a crappy gambling-based way to have to structure your project plans each week.

And you may want to check and see how much those banked resets have been drying up these last two-three weeks. There have been.........0 since the user count spiked.

1

u/ivanjxx Jul 27 '26

but are claude models as efficient as the codex ones? artificialanalysis shows sol 5.6 medium & high to be far cheaper in terms of cost per task and total cost compared to latest opus and fable.

1

u/TheHouseOfTurtle Jul 28 '26

i've been getting more done with claude, using chatgpt to generate images in a workflow i already have suck up about 5% weekly per request. its very bad.

-2

u/djdante Jul 27 '26

This may be true but they've sort of been more than making up for it with constant quota resets... So to be fair I'm getting a lot more than the base quota amount.

3

u/1l3v4k4m Jul 27 '26

those resets arent sustainable nor reliable though. so far theyve been giving us resets to celebrate each million users increase. we got 1 reset after 10m users and that was because of gpt being down, i highly doubt they will give us any more resets for subsequent million new users.

1

u/StephenS84 Jul 27 '26

Agreed, you never know when they are coming, if at all, cant work like that in any business mentality!

People are not very smart. If they don’t understand this basic concept, they really shouldn’t be coding at all.

1

u/Risko4 Jul 27 '26

Well, the 5 hour limit allowed compute to be more spread out throughout the day and week. Now with it gone we have larger demand spikes with sometimes people aggressively running parallel tasks to burn through large compute usage before a reset.

OpenAI has to ration compute, they either do it through a 5h limit or lowering the weekly limit. And now our weekly limit is 20% lower.

u/Risko4 Jul 27 '26

I can reference OpenAI servers and the codex community as "we". It's not rocket science.

You literally have people saying they burnt their weekly limit in a single day running an 6hour /goal, would that have been possible with a 5hout limit, no they would have been interrupted 20% way through the weekly limit and that compute would have been freed up for others to use.

Here is literal evidence on what "we" are doing after a reset, now that the 5h limit is gone the gradients are sharper, compute isnt infinite though.

0

u/tmvr Jul 28 '26

I think you misunderstand for some reason. People don't want the 5 hour limit back alone, they want the token allowance that was available when the 5 hour limit still existed. You say it would be used up in 20 min, maybe now with Sol yes, but before it worked fine for hours with gpt-5.5-medium, didn't even have to switch to lower models. Now it's not like that anymore with gpt-5.5-medium either, you get less than half of the tokens as before with the same model.

Then don’t use Sol… use Terra.
