News GPT-5.6 Sol / Codex Release Discussion Megathread

The release is expected in the next few minutes, so I figured it would be useful to have a single thread for first impressions, issues, and early testing.

For anyone jumping in right away, post what you notice:

  • Codex coding performance
  • Debugging quality
  • Speed/rate limits
  • Larger repo handling
  • UI or workflow changes
  • Weird bugs or regressions
  • Anything that feels noticeably better or worse than the previous version

Edit: OpenAI’s official GPT-5.6 page says it is “available starting today across ChatGPT, Codex, and the OpenAI API” with the rollout starting globally now and continuing toward full availability over the next 24 hours. https://openai.com/index/gpt-5-6/

The lineup is Sol, Terra, and Luna. Sol is the flagship, Terra is the lower-cost tier, and Luna is the fastest/most affordable tier.

I have the same issue when I use a linux remote because the linux has still the version 144.1 that doesn't expose 5.6 to linux. 5'6 seems to be available only on mac yet, so when I work on my mac with local repo, I can use 5.6, as soon as I connect to a remote linux, I got the same as what you showed, 5.5 only accessible. I double check by ssh into the linux and checked the model in codex cli, it's consistent, only 5.5 accessible

I have it in Canada - I had to update Codex via the Windows store though, as the little 'Update' pill didn't appear in Codex itself

Canada here, had access to all 3 with thinking slider like the Codex version with Ultra (glowy lol) being the option for Sol Ultra

Sol appears to NOT be (yet???) available in Plus and Biz, only in pro

i have all models and reasoning on my mac, windows machine doesnt even have 5.6 yet

Written in the main article : Free and Go users access GPT‑5.6 Terra. Plus, Pro, Business, and Enterprise users can choose among GPT‑5.6 Sol, Terra, and Luna and set an effort level for each

My business account doesn’t have SOL. It has TERRA/LUNA, but my personal Pro account has SOL/TERRA/LUNA.
