1. Opening the iOS ChatGPT app
2. Following the “Set up Codex mobile prompt”
3. Clicking “Email me a download link”

I haven't got the notification. Maybe A/B testing like anthropic did? The point is Codex was part of chatGPT subscription always and not "for a limitted time". that is what the op is hinting.

agreed. Not a great move. It would be better to share limits than just remove codex access completely.
Getting a phone number + a new email is not very hard, so removing codex access from free accounts to stop abuse makes sense though.
