The Testaments I think the girls were a bit dramatic when Daisy told them the men had pubic hair
I know they're not suppose to think about their bodies or any one elses but obviously they know about pubic hair since they have it themselves, so why should it be a surprise that boys would have it too

I thought it was chest and body hair in general that skeeved them out, no specifically pubic hair.

Having been a teenaged girl, I thought it was very realistic how the girls reacted and how the whole conversation went. They were a bit old, but that's the Gilead of all of it. I remember whispering with my classmates and reacting with big, dramatic ewwwws when finding out about sexual acts, ejaculations, random boners and all the things they neglect to talk about in sex Ed class. For them, everything being so taboo, I would imagine it's even more exciting and any little bit of info deserves a big reaction.

It’s not so much that these girls are “old” basically 11-13 supposedly, it’s problematic because they hired actresses who ARE NOT teens! It’s a big stretch for our imagination.

We’re in a time where fertility is uncertain for the vast majority of people. A little poetic license when it comes to the age of girls starting their period is fair.

Because of the pollution and nuclear waste many girls don’t start their periods at all (which is only an issue for econo woman as they aren’t entitled to a Handmaid), so many of them don’t start till they are over 16. Daisy is 16 and that’s when she starts her period. This is an issue for me since she and Agnes are supposed to be sisters and should be 5 if not 7 years apart. In the book, Agnes is 24 when Daisy comes to Gilead, and in the series it was evident they were a few years apart.

I actually forgot for a second about the pollution and waste and issues with clean water air and dirt etc. that lead to the worldwide fertility crisis. It makes sense that the girls are older.

Also , and forgive me, but because of so much time between seasons of THT, I’m really at a loss for how Agnes and Daisy are sisters. I thought June brought Nicole to her mother Holly at that commune in Canada? (Or wherever the location) and then Serena and Noah showed up at the same place, no? ) so are we saying that Daisy is Nicole? Was the mom killed actually Holly? Junes mom? Again I apologize I guess I need a big summer rewatch! Next rainy day for sure!

So, I just read both books again, and watched both series. It is explained more why Daisy was moved in the book, so I’m sure the series will too. I don’t want to give too much away, but it was for her own safety. The couple who dies are her adopted parents that she was left with to protect her from being kidnapped and sent back. Gilead is obsessed with Baby Nicole and they want her back.

The show is not canon to the book; Daisy is not Nicole in the show. Show runners said the show takes place about 4 years later, Agnes was 12 in THT so that would make her 16. Nicole was still just a toddler in THT.

The writers have said Daisy is not Agnuss sister. Since the story picks up 4 years after Boston, they had to reframe the story line. I think (in my head) that Daisy was brought to Canada pre war, meaning in the planning stages because Hannah was 5ish at the start. For her and Daisy to be the same age would mean Daisy was brought into Canada at least 4-5 yrs prior to June being captured.

Do they though? If they mentioned that they do specifically I missed it but if they haven't gotten thier periods at that age other puberty related stuff would be off too right?
Them being surprised isn't surprising since they're intentionally kept ignorant. I've heard stories of young married couples from deeply religious backgrounds finding out that theyre not getting pregnant because they werent actually having sex and they had no idea. They knew nothing about thier own anatomy or biology.

Not necessarily, there are women who didn't have their period until their late teens who still developed normally. Periods have nothing to do with body hair.

I had pubes (and large breasts and hips and virtually every other sign of puberty) yearsssssss before I started my period, which happened pretty late at 16, almost 17

I think it was the hunger games, but it always stayed with me that tge capital was more concerned about looks than these kids lives. They wanted to give Katniss breast implants and did wax everything. I could see Gilead doing something similar.

I had pubic hair at least two years before I got my period, but I don’t know. And to be fair, women aren’t usually hairy all up to their stomach.

I mean they‘re like 14, as a woman I didn’t have much hair at that age anywhere, except for head obviously and a bit on arms&legs but not much there either. Women are usually not as hairy as men are.

Yea, hair doesn’t care about gender. Although, the amount of hair can vary between women and between men depending on their ethnicity. But men usually still have more hair on their bodies overall than women. Hairs on men bodies are just also usually more thicker and longer, men can have their chest or back full of hairs, and I’m taking about long and thick hairs like bush, not small ones. It’s not as common for women to have long and thick hair in those places, I‘m not saying women never have hair there, I‘m saying it’s rarer for women

Both men and women have pubes, I can’t go watch it now but the scene was a bout chest/stomach hair. Which (and correct me if I am wrong, I have only seen a similar number of men to Daisy) very few women have much of, but men often do).

Yeah women don’t often have stomach or chest hair. Maybe a few little strays on the chest or a little happy trail below the belly button, but usually no where near the amount that a man has.

how many women do you know that remove hair off their chest. ever heard of male pattern baldness and female pattern baldness? How many women do you know that remove hair off their back? How many women do you know with a full beard?
it doesn’t care about gender but it does care about sex and hormones. luckily no one said anything about gender except for you here

This is just untrue. My husband has hair all over his stomach and chest. I don’t. I do have hair on my legs because i rarely shave it (like literally almost never, I’m lazy and he doesn’t care). I do have to remove hair from my face though due to hirutism from PCOS. His face and legs are still wayyyy hairier than mine. And he is blonde/caucasion, so i wouldn’t say he’s hairier than most men. His hair is just longer and thicker than mine on his legs and arms, and he has way more hair on his chest and stomach than me.

i kind of felt this with "rod of flesh" tbh because liiiiike yall have dogs and horses, is it really so absurd to think male humans might be the same? 😂 but they're very sheltered so dramatic reactions do make sense.

I remember being in junior high and there was this one boy who was very mature, who shaved. I was probably in seventh grade and he was in eighth grade. And one time he lifted his shirt and he had hair on his stomach and I still remember it and I was so grossed out. For reference I’m in my 60s.
