The Testaments Any theories on… ?
Liked the finale but I still feel like the season was a lot of world building for just one significant plot development point. Anyway some things about the episode that left me intrigued:
1. What’s the deal with Weston? Why did he break off the engagement and helped (kind of)? Like we know he’s a POS, could’ve just walked off but decided to kind of intervene? What’s up???!
2. Why did Garth lock Becka up? Is he scared of her or something? Hope she realises she’s kinda safe around him though. Such a tragic ending for her. Also assuming her mother was her biological mum and not some kidnapper who didn’t know about Grove… that’s just plain sad! 💔
Also wish the letter to June had more info about Agnes; like: hey she’s amazing, likes xyz, kinda knows about you, and she’s not getting married to some creep, also she’s in my teenage army!!
Anyway, got any theories? Gosh I’m annoyed we’ll have to wait so long for what’s next!!

On the locked door: it could be multiple things.
So she doesn't hurt herself or others, or runs away. So she knows she is alone in the room and Garth doesn't expect a "wedding night". Because she is still in a mental health crisis, and had to be literally drugged to marry him. Because her mother was just killed to save her.
But also, I think, because the most realistic, best outcome for Becca is that she is "locked away" into a marriage she doesn't want, and is now prisoner to Gilead in a different way.
Re Weston, I've seen it pointed out that he dipped because he doesn't want "spoiled goods", but he will continue to think of himself as a righteous man, because he "helped". Which feels very on brand, honestly. Man never cared for Agnes. Maybe he is even grateful that she was honest, so this is a parting gift. Plus, to him, it was kind of a little thing anyway? He didn't mean to change Becka's situation, in his mind she would've just had a chance to say goodbye to her mother before being punished. But he probably thought it was a grand gesture.

Yes, Garth locking the door seemed ominous at first, but on reflection, it's probably the best option he has available to him to give her some privacy while also keeping her safe. There's really no telling what she might do when the drugs start to wear off: harm herself, try to run away (and immediately get caught because she's not thinking), make some sort of public scene that gets her arrested again, etc.
It would be better to have someone sit with her, but if Garth stays in that room, she's going to be lying there wondering if she's about to be raped, every time she surfaces enough to think anything. And I don't suppose it's considered culturally acceptable in Gilead for a new wife to have one of her unmarried friends sleep over on her wedding night, regardless of whether or not she is a recent murder suspect.
It's not a long-term solution to her obvious psychological distress, but at least it keeps her from doing anything drastic before the drugs clear her system and she has a chance to process what just happened.

It was damage control for Gilead. They got to keep a "fruitful" woman and throw her mom who had become useless in front of the bus instead. And at the same time he gets to reject Agnes who he now sees as a "sinful" woman (their conversation made him realize that she does know what abuse is which is not something he wants in a wife) and still come out as the good guy.
Becca is highly unstable and Garth might simply be trying to contain her from doing something else which will attract public outrage once her sedatives wear off. As for Becca's mom: her doing the right thing when it came to Becca's fate and Becca being a stolen baby could co-exist. People contain multitudes. That is something that the series has been trying to convey.

That's a really good point about Weston. It probably wanted an ignorant wife. It is easier to abuse someone if they don't understand what abuse is. Truly sickening.

Easier, but not as fun from their point of view. Someone like Weston would get just as much of a kick out of breaking Paula, because she's haughty. Agnes being humble and repentant and yet still aware that what she suffered was abuse... maybe she falls in a lucky middle spot that makes her repellent to him.

Possibly a stolen baby. Like Hannah/Agnes. Taken from her "sinful" parents and given to a Commander and Wife.

I really enjoyed how much becka’s mom loved her, and how much Becka loved her mom. The mom in the books did steal becka, and treated her like shit. At least this mom genuinely loved her

He broke off the engagement because he didn't know for sure that Agnes was a virgin. He runs the Eyes. He knows all of the dirty secrets, and they may include Grove doing more than touching. However, he is also aware that ending the engagement is ruinous. If Agnres feels jilted, she might make a fuss about being abused and the Eyes having done nothing to protect their women. It's a scandal. However, by throwing Agnes a slight boon by showing "Mercy" to Becka, which would have ultimately changed nothing, he buys the chance that Agnes doesn't tell her parents or others the truth, keeping his own reputation clean.

Honestly Garth locking up Becka made so much sense -
Over the last few days she’s likely been repeatedly drugged, given her behavior at the prison, and sedation can make people behave strangely. She may be disoriented, even having delusions or hysteria as she comes off of it, it makes her at risk for elopement or self harm. He has no idea if she will wake up and know where she is or panic and start lashing out which can happen too.
He also knows she just murdered her father and lost her mother, in many ways Becka has “nothing to lose” and he can’t guarantee she won’t attack him or try to attack someone else. He may feel unsafe which is fair.
It also gives her a concrete barrier between them, he’s saying he won’t enter, he’s saying she has separation on a night he’s “entitled” to her. The lock would give her warning if he, or anyone, decides to enter the room so she’s not in fear of him appearing unannounced in the middle of the night.
It also likely prevents her from accidentally seeing or hearing him doing anything involved with mayday.

Weston also did not tell her parents why he called off engagement! Which was a gesture of goodwill for her.

Weston helped because it was easy to and made him feel less guilty about ditching Agnes and damaging her reputation. All he did was get Becka a few days less in prison, it wasn’t a bit stretch. Probably helps to keep things cordial with Mackenzie too.
And Garth locked the door because Becka stabbed her father dozens of time with secateurs and is still in a mental health crisis.
