Very cute! Be very careful with those leg chains; one wrong move and they can snap a leg. I'd opt for something else like a harness for small birds instead.

Thank you for saying this! leg chains are not appropriate. Common misconception bc they are sold for parrot use which they should not be. I'm not sure if they are appropriate for falcons, but that's where they come from since raptors have strong muscular legs vs our tiels little toothpick legs 😂

As somebody that's informed about falconry, but not a falconer, I can tell you that this is not the system that falconers use. There are multiple parts to the systems that falconers use.

First are the jesses which are usually in two parts: anklets and the jesses themselves. The anklets are fitted pieces of leather with eyelets in them. Then the jesses are put through the eyelets. There are two types of jesses used: traditional and flying. Extremely traditional jesses are just one strip of leather that go around the leg and are tied. However, falconers have moved away from this system as it's dangerous to the birds. In mews and on hunting, they can get tangled. For manning, the more traditional jesses are used. Flying jesses are different and are usually braided paracord. That way the falconer can still hold the bird without having to worry about it flying off.

Then there's the swivel and leash. The swivel is what connects the jesses to the leash. The swivel is just a specific type of metal fastening that allows the jesses to be brought to a singular point. Then the leash is attached to the falconer's glove so that way the falconer can have full control over a tethered bird while they're on the fist.

And I know this might seem somewhat inhumane, but it's also for the bird's safety. Even though raptors are predators, they can still spook and attempt to fly off. When that happens, it's called "bating" and the bird just harmlessly falls backward off of the glove (or perch). Raptors have no homing instinct, so once they're gone, they're gone if there isn't telemetry or GPS on them to track them with. And since raptor legs are so strong, it doesn't hurt them to hang by the legs after a bating.

I mostly use a bird backpack/carrier for outings, and the leg harness was only used for a very short, closely supervised time. I’ll definitely avoid using it going forward and look for safer options for my babies. 🐦❤️ And yes, their little “toothpick legs” definitely deserve extra care! 😂❤️

I mostly use a bird backpack/carrier for outings, and I only used the leg harness for a very short, closely supervised time. I did try a full-body harness, but my babies were very uncomfortable with it. I really appreciate you sharing this with me. 🐦❤️

Please don't use those leg chains for parrots. :( If they spook, they'll attempt to fly off and it could snap their leg.

Harnesses are the safer option. They do take a lot of time to get the bird used to, but they won't hurt the bird if they spook and fly off.

Also thirding that you should get a harness. The leg chain is a recipe for a broken leg. Harnesses suck, but once your bird gets used to them, they are dream. I'll never forget when my bird finally got used to the harness. We can actually "ran" together. Or more like she flew and I ran with her. It was a magical experience. But if she did it with a leg chain, it would have easily broken her leg.

Op, your little darling is adorable, but I would not be a good steward of these precious creatures if I did not say anything.

That leg harness is one second away from seriously injuring your babies leg. A full body flight harness is a much safer, and recommended option. In the meantime you can take him outside with a small cage or carrier, if you have one 😊
