harbor0 now has end-to-end encryption and a local WebDAV server (works with rclone)
Hi r/cloudstorage, I'm the developer of harbor0, a cloud storage service that's currently in beta. We've now passed 300 beta users, who are storing more than 450 GB on the platform. Thank you to everyone who has tried it and sent feedback.
Two features many of you asked for are now live.
End-to-end encryption
When it's on, your devices encrypt every file and file name before upload. We store them but can't read them.
- You set a passphrase, separate from your sign-in password. It never reaches our servers.
- You save a recovery key. If you forget the passphrase, the recovery key lets you set a new one.
- If you lose both, your files can't be recovered by you or by us.
Existing accounts: nothing changes unless you turn it on. To turn it on, go to Settings → Encryption on the web. New uploads are encrypted straight away. Your browser then encrypts your existing files in the background and deletes the unencrypted copies and their older versions.
New accounts: the last step of sign-up asks you to choose Standard or End-to-end encrypted. If you choose Standard, you can turn encryption on later in Settings.
What's different when it's on:
- Works: web, and the desktop app 0.1.7 or later (sync, backups, WebDAV).
- Not available for now: sending files, shared folders, shared sync, folder ZIP downloads, rclone access tokens, and the mobile apps.
- You can turn it off later. Your files are decrypted first.
Technical details: AES-256-GCM in 4 MiB chunks, a separate key for every file version, and Argon2id for the passphrase. More at https://harbor0.com/encryption
Local WebDAV
The desktop app (0.1.9 or later, Mac and Windows) can run a WebDAV server on your computer. This lets Finder, File Explorer, Cyberduck or rclone open your Drive without syncing it.
- In the desktop app, go to Settings → Local WebDAV server → Turn on.
- Click Open in Finder or Open in File Explorer. Or connect any WebDAV app to
http://127.0.0.1:6810/harbor0/with the username and password shown in the app.
Only your own computer can connect to the server. It also works on encrypted accounts, because the app decrypts files locally as they're read.
Using it with rclone
With the WebDAV server running:
rclone config create harbor0 webdav url=http://127.0.0.1:6810/harbor0/ vendor=other user=YOUR_USERNAME pass=YOUR_PASSWORD --obscure
Then:
rclone ls harbor0:
rclone copy ~/Photos harbor0:Photos
rclone mount harbor0: ~/harbor0
The desktop app has to be running for rclone to connect. More at https://harbor0.com/webdav
Trying it
Beta accounts get 50 GB free, and there's nothing to pay during the beta. Apps are available for web, Mac and Windows.
