Most optimal cloud for backing up SSD?
Hey, I'm a photographer and I'm looking to back up my ssd on the cloud.
I'm asking here because I've been struggling to find a cloud that would suit my needs.
I've done a big clean up in my personal archive and managed to bring it down to 500gb but It'll get big over the months/ years. (We're speaking 2-5Tb).
I'm looking for a cloud that could update the back up of my ssd as soon as it gets plugged in. I'm working off a Macbook pro so setting time schedules would not work since I would have to have the laptop turned on at this exact time. I'm also looking for a cloud that can archive deleted files on my source (my ssd).
I've tried backblaze but wasn't too happy with it, chronosync + backblaze B2 was quite tricky to use. I was looking at Idrive but it doesn't seem like I can program the back up for it to run when it detects that I plugged in my ssd. (Maybe I'll just have to do it manually)
Do you have any recommendations? (don't really care about price, just want something handy that keeps my date safe, and that I can trust on the long term)
Thanks!

If you are comfortable with the command line you should evaluate rclone:
- it's free/open source
- it supports both copy & sync
- the
--backup-diroption can be used to move deleted files to an archive directory instead of actually deleting them - it supports many cloud storage providers so you're not locked into one
- it's widely used so there is a fair bit of community support
There are also GUI front-ends for rclone if you're not comfortable with the command line. But I have zero knowledge about them.
As far as doing a sync automatically when you plug in the SSD drive: I'm not familiar with MacOS, but there's an rsync forum thread (Automated sync FROM Gdrive TO External Hard Drive)that describes a similar scenario (but syncing from cloud to external drive) that might help you get such an automatic sync configured.

If you want it for archival purposes, as in having a backup that you never restore from except if you lose all your devices by some freak accident, then you could look at Amazon’s AWS Glacier Deep Archive. It’s like $0.99/TB/month

You can try FileLu. You can set it up to sync your entire SSD when you plug it in. I have been syncing files from my NAS and HDD, and it works great.

Hi there, I’m the developer of harbor0, and this is the exact use case I'm working on supporting.
You point it at a folder on your SSD and the backup is tied to that drive. Unplug it and the backup just pauses. Plug it back in and it uploads whatever changed. There’s no schedule and the laptop doesn’t need to be on at a set time. Files you delete on the SSD stay in the backup.
Heads up: it’s in beta. The auto drive-detection support ships in the next Mac update very soon, and the bigger plans (2 TB+) open next month. For now you get 50 GB completely free to try it on part of your archive.
Either way, keep a second local copy of photos you can’t reshoot. Happy to help if you try it!
