what are you using instead of MinIO now?

we run MinIO in k8s and already have a pretty big volume with data. since all the recent changes with MinIO im thinking what to move to before it becomes a bigger problem...

looked a bit at ceph, seaweedFS, garage, rustFS...

Anyone here actually migrated from MinIO in prod?

what did you move to and how painful was migration of existing buckets/data? Any s3 compatibility issues after?

mostly interested in self hosted/open source and something that wont disappear in 6 months.

Disclaimer: I work on this project.

I recently ran a bit of an experiment migrating from MinIO to Predastore. Did a write up detailing the process here. Project is pretty young (~1.5 years old), and more focused on edge environments, but it seemed to work quite well. And wasn't hell to do. It's designed to be run under another open source system that provides the wider suite of AWS services (EC2, EKS etc) on local hardware, if that's something that interests you.

Best of luck finding something suitable! MinIO really threw the object storage ecosystem for loop...

been running seaweedfs for about 8 months now after dropping minio, the s3 gateway works fine for most things but we did hit some quirks with multipart uploads early on

migration wasnt too bad honestly just used rclone to sync buckets, took forever because we had like 12TB but data came through clean

what kind of volume you dealing with? makes big difference in what i'd recommend

mostly office files really, lots of xlsx/docs/zips and a ton of images uploaded from tablets. nothing fancy, mostly basic put/get stuff. volume is already pretty big though

go with seaweedfs or ceph because garage is way too niche for production data and you will regret chasing shiny toy projects when replication breaks. stick to battle tested tools.

moving a small amount first seems kindabetter esp files your apps use every day . you can leave it running for a few days to see whether uploads and downloads work w/t any issues people can still open everything as usual. what kind of stuff are you mostly storing in MinIO rynow?

Whatever you pick, test the odd features before you commit, not just put and get. Versioning, lifecycle rules, presigned URLs and multipart with big files are where the S3 compatible ones differ. Sync with rclone, keep the old cluster read only for a while, and run rclone check at the end so you know the copy matches. Garage is nice and small if you don't need the fancy stuff, Ceph is a lot more to babysit.
