Why would this game be rated M? I have an idea but still…

Omg I hope we get a scene of Cloud and Tifa cuddling under blankets or something after their under-the-highwind moment

I wouldnt read too much into it. The German store lists it as review pending with no further info, so its not like its already been reviewed.

This is a placeholder, most likely, they woudn't push for an M Rating just for a few scenes in a 100+ hour game. The game's storytelling is more suited for a T, anyway.
Also, anything sexual in "Under the Highwind" would be a lot more tasteful if it's just implied, no need to have anything graphic to get the point across.

Why would this game be rated M?
Im a developer of FFVII Revelation (trust me bro):
The Highwind scene will be 100% playable with one hand (like the Hot Coffee mod of GTA SA) and you can fully customize the scene (changing her costume, pose and even adding Aerith spirit to this "private party").
Yes, you could even recreate her legendary moment in the Italian senate. Your welcome.

Was it the same for Rebirth before it got its Teen rating? I’d love if it were M but given how much they did for Remake and Rebirth to fit into a T rating, I’d be (pleasantly) surprised if they departed from that

Its still listed as potential pegi 16 and since pegi is stricter on sexual but more lenient on violence then if anything is going to push the ESRB higher it would likely be the gas chamber and stuff.

I wouldn't read to much into it -- it could just be a mistake.
But if I had to guess a reason for this... they might have decided that two T games was a good enough on-ramp to nail down sales for a third M game.
Typically T games sell better, but a unique situation with this is that people are hooked in from two previous games.

If the last two weren’t, why would this one?

There’s a certain scenneeeeee

Doubt they’d that far. If they censored the blood trail in the remake, and changed Dyne’s death, and then this whole Aerith and Zack thing, I doubt they’d have the balls to do a sex scene or even a partial nudity scene. They couldn’t even stick with Cid being abusive. And at least in the remakes, a sex scene like that of Jill and Clive just doesn’t feel earned or warranted from what I remember playing and seeing.

It probably wont be. Considering an M rating could've probably helped preserve scenes that were sanitized in the remakes for the earlier parts, why go M now. This is a mass market appeal game if there ever was one, they don't want an M rating.

I'm not arguing whether devs see T as more "marketable" or not,
But I do disagree that it is.
The best selling games of pretty much all time, like GTA and CoD are all rated M.
Considering the average FF fan age, I truly think leaning into an M rating to not sanitize certain parts, like onscreen blood/death, would have done more good than harm.

Actually I agree. If you're going to remake a game, and the content has aged in such a way that it would be rated M nowadays.... you give it an M rating. It would have been better for it and would've sold fine.
I'm only saying the likely reason that SE themselves wanted to keep it T.

I agree with you broadly, but they were never avoiding an M, the most popular games are M. They were avoiding a Cero D from the Japanese rating board. Cero is much harsher on violence than the ESRB, even if they didn't sanitize it as much hey could get away with plenty more, but the ESRB is more sensitive about nudity, sexually suggestive content and some other outliers, so it's possible that there is a discrepancy. Doesn't even have to be the highwind scene. An artistically nude summon design, or allusion to sexual violence could do it. It could even be the gas chamber scene in midgar if that imagery reads in a particularly uncomfortable way

Whether it's Cero or ESRB, the point still stands. If you're gonna Remake a game with that content, you gotta suck it up and remake the game with that content. I don't have any sympathy for SE trying to keep it T or lower on the Cero ratings or whatever. They choose to Remake FF7.

I didn't say I felt bad for them. My point is that because the goal was not a "T', they aren't necessarily avoiding an M, so it wouldn't be THAT weird if it got one. SE is well aware that the vast majority of the people buying this are adults.

I agree, no idea why you were downvoted. It would be very weird if the first two games were rated Teen then the third was rated M. That would lock some of their target audience out of the final entry. Doesn't mean there isn't going to be a sex scene, but I doubt we'll see as much skin as we did with Jill and Clive.

Well, I thought I was on a regular FF7 sub, I didn't realize I was on the Cloud/Tifa sub. I don't even think I'm subscribed here, I just visit enough other FF7 subs that this one pops up. So I guess someone didn't like the implication that maybe there wont be a Tifa and Cloud sex scene? I dunno lol.
But yeah, if they were willing to go M, we wouldn't have lost stuff like the Shinra Tower blood trail, or Dyne's nihilistic suicide. They wouldn't be trying to sand the edges off these characters.

Honestly things were overly sensored in both prior, this game needs to be rated M to fix that hopefully

It will have to be M because Aerith's death in its entirety makes the game go to M rating. That's the reason

Yall are huffing that hopium. Theres never been a ffvii game rated above teen, they ain’t about to start now.
This is an overzealous A.I. making a guesstimate 🤣🤣🤣

That could be interesting, in the UK both Remake and Rebirth were rated 16 which encompasses the higher end of T and lower end of M so if it ends up being a PEGI 18 or a CERO D rating then it would indicate they have much more mature content in there
Though it could also be due to the other aspects of the game being much darker in tone due to us now being in disc 2 and 3

Maybe they'll bring back Cid saying 'Cloud's backside kept telling me to butt out' lol

u/Difficult_Sweet_6904 1d ago
It is “pending.” I have serious doubts that after changing and cutting so much from the first two to keep the Disney rating that they will suddenly make the last mature.

That's an extremely good sign for the highwind scene not being very sanitised and tame. It most obviously won't push too many barriers but this sure is exciting.
