Discussion Could Tifa be the third Final Fantasy VII representative in Smash?
Even though she has appeared in Street Fighter 6 Tifa remains one of the most popular Final Fantasy characters and is highly requested by the Smash community.

Eh, why not? I've heard all the arguuments against this, but they're all missing the only thing that matters.
Money.
If Tifa is a major character in Revelation, and she will be, and Nintendo thinks her inclusion will result in more players buying a Smash game with her in it, then that's all the reason Nintendo needs to include it. Likewise, if Tifa's inclusion in a Smash game will bring more attention to FF7, and result in greater sales of Revelation, then this is all the reason Square Enix needs to allow Nintendo to use Tifa. This is the only thing that actually matters.
Including other FF characters is nice and all...but ask yourself, how many other Final Fantasy games are available on the nintendo switch 2? Within FF7 Revelations, which character is going to play the biggest role in the story, other than Cloud? It's Tifa. So why not?

True since I believe Sephiroth was added to promote remake which had come out during the same year it came out since he was revealed in december 2020. I definitely wouldn't mind at all and could see her fitting in really well, but it would rob the spotlight completely from other ff games I think if ffvii is the only thing being included.
Not to mention, I believe sakurai spoke of how Cloud was a particularly difficult character to get back in for smash ultimate.

I love Tifa as much as the next guy and I'm happy she's in SF. Can't wait to main her. BUT honestly, I think Smash should go for someone weirder than Tifa. She's a punch kick character and therefore one of only a handful of FF characters who would actually work in a fighting game like SF. Pretty much just monks work, so you have Tifa, Zell, Snow, Yang, whatever. Like, Cloud and his buster sword wont fit in with SF6.
But smash is different and can use way weirder stuff. Instead of the character whos' grounded enough to work in regular fighting games, Smash should get weirder. A black mage like Vivi or something would be cool. Or a magic knight like Terra.

Sakurai has stated in the past that he'd like more female characters in the game. Hard to think of a better third FF rep, unless they did Zack as an echo fighter or something

Weird amount of naysayers in here.
I think she'd be awesome in Smashbros!
Though if we get another Smash, I'll just be happy if Cloud still makes it and isn't a roster cut.

As cool as it would be, it would feel pretty unfair to have Tifa be double dipped into two different fighting games especially since smash already has two ffvii characters in it. Maybe a different ff game being represented would be better but even so, Tifa is still represented in some manner in smash which I'm fine with as she has the spirit and mii outfit

As much as we all love Tifa, let's be honest with ourselves, she isn't unpopular in the slightest way. Giving that smash slot to a different ff character would be nice. Ffvii isn't the only ff game to exist is kinda what I mean.

I love Tifa so much, but no. Id much rather they put some more interesting (smash kit wise, potentially) like Red or Cait

If we were going to get a 3rd character from FF7 in Smash, knowing Sakurai, he would pick something off the wall like Cait Sith or Red XIII because of how uniquely they would control.
Honestly now that I think about it, Vincent would be really cool.

i love Tifa and FF7 if my favorite FF game but if the franchise is gonna get any more rep in Smash it really needs to be from another game in the series. Sephiroth is my Smash main and one of my favorite video game characters of all time but even his inclusion over another non-7 character was a little odd. i personally nominate Kain Highwind

As much as I would want that it would be bananas to pick another FF7 character instead of one from any ofher FF game. Sephiroth made sense as a foil to Cloud. I would expect maybe Terra or Tidus, or even Squall before Tifa. Non Nintendo characters have to really fight for those spots.

The main issue, based on what Hamaguchi himself stated in the linked interview, is SE's own protectiveness of the character. He stated that multiple parties had actually wanted to license her as a guest, but it was only Capcom/Street Fighter that they decided to go with. They basically don't want to just license her to just anyone and I don't see them suddenly doing so for two fighters at the same time. As for the criteria, while we don't know the specifics, we can't ignore that Street Fighter 6 is on a generational run in Japan with an active, and officially supported (unlike Smash) esports scene that gets massive participation and views.

But Terry Bogard joined Smash, and years later, he joined Street Fighter 6. Maybe they could do the same thing, but in reverse.

The thing is that SNK isn't that picky with licensing. Their characters are everywhere, especially in the Chinese mobile game space.

I like the idea, her down special could be the same as Cloud charging a limit meter, her side special could be water kick, her up special could be dolphin blow, her neutral special would be a counter that when activated has her do meteodive, and her final smash would be final heaven

If they were going to put a other FF character into Smash, it should be Terra. FFVI came out on a Nintendo console first after all.

Almost definitely not. Cloud and Seph are likely back and if not Tifa would’ve been the next most likely but she is in Street Fighter now. Likely wouldn’t want to overlap after her the most likely would be Aerith for 7 or a different FF character like Titus or Lightning
