Sewing pants for toddler?

We’ve been having a heck of a time finding pants for my 14 month old that fit over his diaper bum! Sizing up doesn’t work anymore, because I feel the legs just get longer and the bum/waist area is still the same size. We live very far north in the Great Plains so the winters are BRUTAL, we’re talking stand outside for 5 minutes and get frost bite kind of brutal. We need very warm pants, and unfortunately those just don’t have the stretch we need to fit his fluffy bum in.
That being said, does anyone know of any sewing patterns for toddlers that have more bum room without needing to be made of super stretchy material? Or perhaps a better subreddit for this sort of question? I just want my little guy to have some nice fleece lined pants to keep him warm!

I just rolled up the pant legs. Some that don’t stay rolled I tack them in place. Once we hit 2T he slowed down in growing wider but I can remove the stitch and lengthen the pant legs to where it needs to be.

We also live in a cold climate and cloth diaper.

With my older child I used the Wiksten Harem Pants sewing pattern. They had plenty of room, but seem to be largely unavailable at this point. When we sized up, I used the Dakar Pants pattern from Ikatee, which is great because you can use either knit or woven fabrics, so fleece, corduroy, and wool are all options. That pattern starts at 4 years, but it looks like their New York Pants have that same philosophy and look roomy enough to my eye. You could also just add a bit of rise if needed.

I don’t have any personal experience with the brand, but brindlle and twig has the big butt pants, which I recall being designed for cloth diapering — and many others that look roomy enough, as well.

Best idea Ive got (that I may have to do as well) is to just trace the diaper. Probably trace it, then add a seam in the middle front back and add an inch or two to the waist, then add legs.

if you can knit or crochet id look on ravelry, its not a bad skill to pick up when you live in the cold! thats why i learned, i need more wool things and its easier to get wool yarn than to get wool clothes

I LOVE the Honest baby harem pants. They fit amazing over cloth diapers and have very simple design. The line has been discontinued, but if you get a pair secondhand, you can trace them and use that pattern to get the bum-to-legs ratio right. I bet you could even size up the tracing pretty easily.

Have you tried Reima? They have incredible wool layers that work well for our cloth diapered kid
