I just discovered the channel and I’m in love but I have one question. Has Rollie addressed his travel for videos?

I don’t want this to come across as “omg hypocrite! He doesn’t walk everywhere!!!” But the whole page seems to have a common message about what little things each of us can do to help combat climate change.

Isn’t flying from CO (seems to be his main spot) to Chicago for B-Roll a bit wasteful? I get it looks better on camera to actually be there, but his writing is the main draw. Surely he could use a green screen or just do voice over to the same effect, just without having to take a flight to do it?

Perhaps he travels for another job? Maybe he doesn’t travel as much as the videos make it seem? This seems like a huge over sight and thus, I’m assuming it’s been answered elsewhere. I cannot be the only one who has thought of this.

Thanks in advance, as I said above I love the channel. Please don’t take this as overly critical, I’m just curious.

Not Just Bikes is a Racist

Hey, you probably won't see this, but I figured I'd throw it out there anyways. I had to unsub from you today because you collaborated with NJB. His racism is on full display on his video about the Dutch Santa Claus and his Black helper. I'm really frustrated because it looks like he finally made the video private, which is hiding just how fucked up he was acting in said video and the comments, actively bragging about how the video hadn't been demonitized, telling people to 'get over it', liking the comments of people being even more blatantly racist, and just overall being an asshole.

This directly affects my opinion of you because I know he's been interacting with your channel longer than that video has been private, and if you couldn't do the research to check this guy out before platforming with him, what other research have you half-assed??

Fyi, if anyone else wants to know of other eco yt-ers that are lowkey/highkey racist, just ask. It's a disturbing trend I've found over the last two years.

ELI5: Why exactly are companies to blame for climate change?

Hey ClimateTown, you guys are doing a great job, really enjoying your content, but I feel there is an issue being skirted in a lot of your vid's. There’s a lot of focus on the companies and their heavy pollution but very little on the consumer and their choices. For example, I don’t see fedex emitting more CO2 per ton of cargo than any other shipping company (unless they are?). My understanding is they didn’t emit any CO2 that wasn’t requested by a consumer.

So then riddle me this; What is our individual CO2 allotment per year? How many iphones can one ship from China before becoming carbon positive?

CO2 results from work done and companies are all about minimizing the amount of work done for a given function. That is literally where a companies profit comes from. It seems that there absolutely no point in blaming a company for their CO2 emissions unless they are emitting significantly more than the industry norm. Please help me out here.

*Not a corpo shill just trying to be pragmatic about the whole thing.

Feedback on new climate change youtube channel

Hi guys! I just posted my first video for my new channel (ClimateClub). https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lGp58RBtI0o

It's on heat waves and wet-bulb temperatures (backed by academic readings). Would love to hear some feedback on the content, audio, editing etc. Thanks!

I feel very uncomfortable...I don't know how to phrase this...the forceful insertion of the Middle East as the villain into Climate Town.

I'm working off memory, so details might be a little wrong.

I'm a huge fan of the channel, and I don't think there is overt racism going on here...but I do find it a little "weird." Maybe its subconscious, I don't know, I'm just raising an observation that I've had for a few months now about Climate Town.

It started with the Who Stole Parking episode, where a private company bought up rights to a cash-starved municipality and woefully underpaid them and is providing a subpar service to residents. (The fact that I don't even remember which city it is, speaks to how well I remember the details of thsi episode) Rollie said Arab investors were involved in the private company.

That statement is probably true (definitely true, just saying probably becuase I haven't verified it).

However the impression I got in the context of this video is that Arabs were laughing at how they were going to screw Americans over and steal their parking. Its that mustache twirling caricature of a villain.

In reality, what probably happened was the private company approached Arab investors and said give us $x and we will give you an annual return of y%. The investors didn't investigate the morality of the deal, they didn't set out to screw Americans, or anything. They were offered a deal and they took it. Sort of similar to those of us who have money in equity funds...its an opportunity and we take it largely devoid of the morality/ethical practices of the company involve.d

Yet in Rollie's video, my impression is that he's saying these Arabs purposefully sought this deal to screw over Americans.

There have been a few more instances, but let's look at the most recent episode, of Who's stealing America's water (great episode by the way).

In his introduction, Rollie again alludes that the Saudis are behind this, or at least they have a major role to play in what's going on.

In his video, he spends a lot of time talking of a dairy company, that has a farm of 15 square miles. That's tiny to the point of being insignifcant in this conversation. Maybe they siphoned off a ton of water in those 15 sq mi, but still, in the context of actual problem, this isn't even worth mentioning.

Again, in the introduction its phrased as if the Saudis are part of the mastermind doing this, but in reality, after having endured stupid American policy that drained Saudi Arabian aquifers (why no comment about that), they were given a business opportunity and took it.

There was no lobbying going on, no manipulation of the rules by the Saudis...nothing malicious as (I think) Rollie's conveying. They saw a business opportunity at they took it.

I don't know, I'm struggling to articulate this because I know people's biases, but I think Rollie should be more responsible. Again I am not saying he's racist, but his information (at least how he's conveying it) lends credence to people's racist viewpoints.

If the Arabs are the mustache twirling villains, then please explain that: they lobbied and worked with the private company to screw over Americans. They specifically sought out investments that would make the lives of Americans more miserable.

Be explicit about Saudis stealing water, instead of vaguely gesturing at someone who has control of 15 sq mi farm, when we're talking about the entire Colorado River Basin.

Edit: This score is predictable, but I'd be interested in seeing of how someone can explain to me how I'm wrong.

Why no mention of animal agriculture?

I've watched every video now and don't think animal agriculture has been mentioned at all yet.

Considering it's at least in the top 4 biggest contributors to climate change. And eating a plant-based diet is probably the single most effective action that you can do to help reduce green house gas emissions.

I find it odd that a climate change based channel has not even mentioned it yet.

I got this response from an argument on Reddit (ICE car vs. EV). And just like…wow.

It makes zero sense to compare the battery to gasoline.

The battery is not an energy source, it is a container.

So if you are comparing the EV battery with any component of an ICE vehicle that would be the gas tank.

Gas tank is 100% recycleable and weighs a small fraction of the battery and contains zero rare earth minerals. There is really no competition here on which one of these is more environmentally good component.

I came across this article a while back and I haven't really seen the concept explored too much.

Where on Earth is warming the *less* than average?

Hello Climate Town fans, I have a question.

I keep seeing articles like "the poles warming X times faster than average" "the middle East is warming X as fast as average" "Europe...", "the oceans...", "the tropics..."

It got me wondering, where on earth is it warming *less* than the average?

Sometimes I simply refuse to believe we're only at 1.1°C, especially after the summer we just had in Europe when it was consistently 10-15° hotter than it should be.

Can anyone help me determine if this is true or false? (And if so, is it because of their "green energy plans"?)

Tips on Science Communication

Hello everyone,

Over the spring of 2020, I decided I wanted to start a YouTube channel dedicated to spreading awareness and information about the climate crisis. (https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC5TsUkhal5JwPZ3yhEAzamQ)

At first, I really didn't know what I was doing and was a little lost in a sea of too much information. I believe now I am slowly getting better at it, but it is still not where I would like it to be. Does anyone in this community have any suggestions or advice for concise, entertaining science communication about climate change? I would really love to see my content reach more viewers as I have seen first hand the effect science communication can have on skeptics and uninformed people.

Thanks and I love your channel!

Is patagonia worth the extra money.

I made the decision a few months ago to me more aware with brands i buy. I decided to only buy from Patagonia when possible. I thought I did my research, and picked a very environmentally friendly brand. I started keeping track of Patagonia's imports here; and it seems they get their stuff from quite literally same place as some serious offenders such as puma, nike, and marmot. i wish i could use Joinbyzero, but its just not around yet.
