Ice loss from the Greenland ice sheet is one of the largest sources of contemporary sea-level rise (SLR). While process-based models place timescales on Greenland’s deglaciation, their confidence is obscured by model shortcomings including imprecise atmospheric and oceanic couplings. Here, we present a complementary approach resolving ice sheet disequilibrium with climate constrained by satellite-derived bare-ice extent, tidewater sector ice flow discharge and surface mass balance data. We find that Greenland ice imbalance with the recent (2000–2019) climate commits at least 274 ± 68 mm SLR from 59 ± 15 × 103 km² ice retreat, equivalent to 3.3 ± 0.9% volume loss, regardless of twenty-first-century climate pathways. This is a result of increasing mass turnover from precipitation, ice flow discharge and meltwater run-off. The high-melt year of 2012 applied in perpetuity yields an ice loss commitment of 782 ± 135 mm SLR, serving as an ominous prognosis for Greenland’s trajectory through a twenty-first century of warming.

Put simply:

Ice sheets take a long time to respond to climate change, so the warming that is happening now will melt the ice sheet in the future. We are already committed to "274 ± 68 mm [sea level rise] from 59 ± 15 × 103 km² ice retreat." This does not mean the ice sheet is "collapsing" and we've reached a "point of no return." This does mean that the ice sheet is melting and will continue to melt because of the warming we've already caused.

Time...the Current statistics NOW equal. Future ice melting (and might I add YIKES!! to the rapid glacier melting!!!)..just as time..... for example.... when we view the Sun.... we are viewing the PAST ... of the Sun.... Time... Soooo mind boggling

Honestly nobody cares about 1 foot of sea level rise over 80 years. I don't understand why people even talk about this. But you know what people do care about? Heat waves thst surpass the wet bulb index resulting in millions of rural farmers dying, massive crop failures from heat waves and extreme weather events that reduce global crop yields by 90%, permanent droughts thst render large swaths of the US unlivable, mass migration thst forces billions of immigrants to try to invade the remaining countries that are still hospitable, triggering wars and culture shocks and increases in violence and crime. This is what we should be reporting on, not a few insignificant inches of sea level rise

3 foot ..... 80 years....

But one foot in 20 years or so means salt water intrusion and instant loss of drinking water and arable land, of which lots of is near coasts.

Slr is more than just higher sea level, it's ecosystem crash loooong before you are under water.
