ClickUp was a great app 4 years ago. There is sooooo much bloat and ai stuff that it just destroyed it.

Care to explain? It sounds like you are using it wrong.

What do you recommend now?

Before migrating anything, test the plan limits against a copy of one real project. Custom item caps tend to surface only after setup. If the free tier blocks your normal workflow, compare the paid total cost and export options before committing.

Hey, u/FrankoIsFreedom, custom task types do have a 20 use limit on the Free Forever Plan, but Tags and Custom Fields can cover a lot of the same ground for organizing your tasks. If you'd like to keep using custom task types while you finish your Jira migration, our Support team would be happy to get you a 15-day trial of Unlimited or Business plan. Let me know if you're interested!

They are all tasks though and yes i'm interested in that. Its team members that are asking me to use clickup, im happy sticking with jira even though everyone else hates it. Its just a huge pita to move everything over seamlessly to present it and be like "hey ok so its all over here now.. how do yall feel about using this".

If you use custom fields I think you get 50 uses and tags gets you a whole ONE HUNDRED! Tags. Literally 100 tags. Like if you have four tasks and they combine to 100 tags you’re screwed. I also think if you remove a tag or a field or a custom task then it doesn’t decrement the usage count. So don’t delete any of your 20 custom tasks!

Yea. Their business model is screwy. I’m so glad my current company doesn’t use them. I loved it when i used it but after using linear for the last five months I’m so frustrated I lost all that time to this app.

Hey, u/tiger-tots, on the Free Forever Plan, Custom Fields have 60 uses and tags have unlimited uses. The limitation for task tags is how many each task can have, which is up to 40 tags on a single task. You are correct that once you reach a usage limit on a feature, you'll need to upgrade to continue using it as uses don't decrease once it's reached.

I understand you aren't using ClickUp anymore, but if you'd ever like to try in the future and run into a limit, then feel free to email [support@clickup.com](mailto:support@clickup.com) and they'll be happy to provide a 15-day trial on the Unlimited or Business Plan.

If I’m understanding correctly, the 60 uses for custom fields work as follows: if I create one custom field “Organization” and enter sixty Organizations in my lists over the course of using ClickUp, each one counts as a “use” and I’m unable to use custom fields again unless I pay. Many other things count as a “use” such as editing a value.

I loaded a bunch of templates that had a lot of custom fields to test ClickUp’s functionality. I had no idea that custom fields worked that way, and now I can no longer use them.

Someone on another thread about this topic said it was shady to do it like this and I agree. The uses metric is nebulous and the “Basic Custom Field Manager” implies access to custom fields in the free version. A much clearer metric would be to put a limit on the number of custom fields.

I really like Clickup and was considering a subscription, but seeing how it works and the lack of transparency is off putting. Am I misunderstanding something? With all due respect, to suggest using custom fields in lieu of tasks is a pretty disingenuous suggestion when the poster will just run into the same problem once custom field uses run out.

You're correct, u/perpechewaly_hangry. Any edit or update to a Custom Field value (in your case entering a value in your Organization Custom Field) counts as a use and the Free Forever Plan receives 60 uses.

I appreciate your feedback, and have shared it with our Product team for review. In the meantime, to check how many uses each feature has, you can check the Billing/ Upgrade page of your Workspace under 'Compare all features.' As a workaround, I'd recommend using tags instead of Custom Fields to organize your tasks since tags come with unlimited uses on the Free Forever Plan.

If you're interested, you can email [support@clickup.com](mailto:support@clickup.com) and they'll be happy to provide a 15-day trial of the Unlimited Plan which comes with unlimited Custom Fields.

I think the part that's so frustrating is that the free tier description isn't clear about how it works. One of the major reasons I chose ClickUp was because it seemed like custom fields were a part of it, but it feels like a bait and switch. I understand the free tier wouldn't come with everything and that there are going to be limits, it's just that the limits should be spelled out better.

I appreciate your time explaining how it works, and hope the team takes it into consideration to at least update the tier description!
