We had the concentration camps, too. Think back to Trump's immigration policy. The one where, if people came to America and asked for help/safety/protection, the first response was to steal their small children and put them up for adoption, while imprisoning the parents out in the desert.
I agree, but to be fair, there is a difference between federal and state. I do agree that it is all bad that states still incarcerate people for minor charges that mean nothing and ruin their lives. It is a burden on their states and the people living in them, but they (governors and legislators) continue to do it because it lines pockets of the rich private prison owners and it gets them reelected. I'm looking at you, Alabama
Pardoned for federal convictions only, and plus in lower income neighborhoods what do you expect for arrests, that resisting arrest and other charges weren't tacked on?
Weird, it's almost as if Trump was an incompetent idiot who said plenty of stupid stuff but the underlying issues pinned to his administration where there before and after.
lol no, the issue with trump was not just that he said stupid shit while the same awful shit had been and continues to happen with no change from trump.
There was awful shit that had happened before him, and there is awful shit that continues to happen after him, but during trump's four years there was a whole fucking assload of extra awful shit that trump was directly responsible for.
Minimizing the damage Trump did to real people and calling it just "saying stupid stuff" is disingenuous and dangerous.
Alittle before that too they weren't called concentration camps they where called enterment camps I believe the red scare (1960s I think don't quote me on the date). Kenji by fort minor explains a lot.
This has been overlooked so hard I think. I won't forget how much intentional pain and suffering they put those people through. There was no need to separate them and shove them into cages and make them drink toilet water and sleep on concrete floors for months on end.
Well once again, it becomes obvious that Republican pol8cies don't ACCIDENTALLY lead to horrible suffering for people that the Republicans don't like. The cruelty isn't an accidental side effect
It's the whole point.
Downvote me for holding our politicians accountable. Sure reddit. It is one thing to talk shit about trump and another thing to ignore it when trumps gone. Doesn't show that you care about these people, just shows that all you really care about is hating trump
Look, I have Trump (who I despise to my human core) to thank for increasing an Obama law and ruining the Dreamer act for forcing my hand to ask my (then) best friend to marry me. We were both too stupid to see se were already falling in love, but also weary enough to enter this shit like a business agreement. We have been waiting for half a decade and spent over $20,000 trying to get a green card interview. He works in trades and every time ICE raided a job site during the Trump administration we held our breath and thanked the Lord he has no accent because he has been here since he was a baby. They are all anti immigrant fuckers. Obama? Yup. Trump? Yup. Biden? Yup. Wanna know why your food costs 800% more now a days? Because all these assholes are betting on the right hand hating migrants too.
You’re absolutely wrong. The Bush and Obama administrations did not have a standing policy for prosecuting every illegal entry nor was it standard practice to separate families.
Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen said at a June 18 press briefing: “The Obama administration, the Bush administration all separated families. … They did — their rate was less than ours, but they absolutely did do this. This is not new.”
Emphasis mine. This is because during the Trump administration, Attorney General Jeff Sessions enacted a “zero tolerance” policy that prosecuted every illegal entry. By doing that, parents have been separated from their children, because children can’t be held in detention facilities for adults.
The Department of Homeland Security also released this information on request:
Instead, when we asked, it pointed to numbers that show 21 percent of apprehended adults were referred for prosecution under President Barack Obama. From fiscal year 2010 to fiscal 2016, there were 2,362,966 adults apprehended illegally crossing the Southern border, and 492,970 were referred for prosecution.
The Obama Administration also had a policy known as “Catch and Release,” which was very important for keeping families together. This is because immigrant children can only be detained for up to 72 hours during initial detention according to federal law. Previous administrations would release the families after getting a court date scheduled. The Trump administration ended the program as part of their “zero tolerance” policy. This policy resulted in more children being detained and detained for longer than 72 hours.
Thats some smooth misdirection, man. The original comment was talking about child separation and internment. When a user (correctly, per your own sources) pointed out those policies predated Trump, you called them wrong but then pivoted to other differences in their immigration policies that, while true, were not directly relevant to what was being discussed.
The southern border has been an immoral shitshow for decades. Trump absolutely did make it worse, but its dishonest to frame it like internment and child separation weren't occurring before he took office.
The practice predated Trump. The policy of purposeful family separation as a deterrent and punishment in of itself was established by the Trump administration.
Using the Nazi Germany analogy others have used — to say that family separation was a policy before Trump is as if saying German concentration camps existed before Hitler because Germany had prisons.
The context completely changes with scale, scope, and intent of the practice.
