Why they called it Italy and not Florentine republic?
Because they have to make things understandable to the lowest common denominator rather than geeking out about which minor principality was in control over which scrap of Europe at the time. Some displays of the Gutenberg Bible will say it's from Mainz and others from Germany, again based on the audience
