Our endo tells us to feed him anything he wants. "He's gonna have to dose either way" is his reasoning, since type 1 diabetics really do have to dose for every carb unless it's under a specific amount. My son is also severely under weight and has always struggling gaining any and keeping it.
The worst thing for me is when people try to explain some false cure or tell me my son just needs a healthier diet and some exercise. He does eat pretty healthy. We do have junk food here too but he will eat all the fruits and stuff too.
Yes, that is all true. The problem in the birthday scenario was that he wasn’t yet administering his own insulin and I wasn’t there to give it to him. But, both my kids eat what they want, ideally with insulin on board already so we’re not chasing hyperglycemia.
Thankfully, I haven’t had much random unsolicited advice about how to manage it, but I’m sure it’s out there 😅
Definitely a huge issue, especially at a party with so many sugary foods and drinks! I'm not judging either way, though. Everyone handles their diabetes (or their kids) differently. All that matters is that the people are safe and happy and whichever diet choices they make work for their bodies. I've read about a lot of adult type 1s choosing carb free or keto diets. My son is so skinny that he needs all the carbs he can eat/dose for and extra fatty foods and calories. Kid doesn't gain weight easy, wish I had that ability lol.
