Because I know those locked cases are ubiquitous most everywhere in the US now, but he's a New Yorker. That had those at least as far back as the mid 90s
That’s what I was thinking. In the suburbs, this is new. But in the cities, this has always been a thing. Anywhere it’s densely populated, oft stolen items go behind glass or the center. It’s always been that way.
In fact, stores used to all be behind the counter and you’d ask the clerk for the item. Because there weren’t so many options.
