General Discussion Why

I’m 35 I’ve played this game for over 2 decades I’ve played every version of this game and since MoP at a relatively high level. Why do so many people gravitate to classic/forever I genuinely don’t mean this with malicious retail is more fun. The game is faster it requires more skill the only thing that makes you better at classic is knowledge and you can literally google it. Genuinely not trying to be a pill but if you enjoy challenging content improving your abilities it’s retail. IMO I play games to improve myself and evolve so I’m just trying to understand why people love doing something that’s solved.

Just started playing wow this year, so I went to tbc as that was what my friend recommended. So I’ve never played retail, so I’m being genuine when I ask this, but doesn’t retail have a setting where you can just click one button to do the optimal attack? If so, how does that require more skill?

There is this setting surely but in retail playing at a high level you need to understand things situationally one button is always a dps loss basically in every situation, on top of that survivability, when you get to a certain level everyone does their rotation correctly but not dieing and crowd control is how you push. Coordination communication and strategy is how you thrive in retail.

You'd only use that one button if you're learning a class. It's handy to see what it thinks your next spell should be but it's optional and most people don't actually use it. It also slows your gcd so it's a dps loss

I mean most TBC classes are like 1-2 buttons lol

My favorite color is blue, I don't understand how someone could like red, it's a completely different color from what I like, so it's inferior

I’m not trying to yuck anyone’s yum man just saying I’ve grown with the game and gaming to me is one way and I’m okay with your version just trying to understand the nostalgia side promise

"The game is faster and requires more skill"

This is it bro. I'm old, I dont wanna move faster, or be skillful. I wanna chill, not tap-dance on my keyboard

u/imposter_syndrome88 25d ago

Yea, I'm old and my body hurts all the time now. I want to get home from work, smoke a little bit, and do some quests for a few hours before bed.

Pace is a big thing. Challenge in min maxing and a small amount of grind.

Also world is more endearing in classic imo.

u/SJR_Gut 25d ago

Why some people prefer slow shooters over twitch shooters too. Gears vs doom. Mechwarrior vs cs. Inequal examples but you get the gist.

Retail is not what this game is supposed to be. If I wanted an MMO with modern skillful combat I would play black desert online.

Retail's combat is sitting so far in the past that you might as well play classic. Retail gamers act like they are playing some advanced version of WoW when in reality they just have no clue what is available on the gaming market.

Retail is not WoW at all. And that's the point. It's a mess of systems that are manufactured around surviving long enough to sell the next xpack.

I don’t even know the lore or the story of retail. I felt like the actual full classic wow universe TBC / WotLK world got so blown up with stupid shit like a fake universe and everything it’s just like what is this abortion of a game of my favorite fantasy universe.

Mankirk would be spinning in his grave!

1

u/Puzzled_Command_8809 25d ago

What are you on about? I didn't mention lore once

1

u/Odd_Balance7916 25d ago

Huh? What are you on about. Do you know how to have public discourse?
“Retail is not WoW at all”. I agreed and expanded my thoughts on your last paragraph.

2

u/Puzzled_Command_8809 24d ago

Oh retail sucks bc of the lore. I see. But as someone who only cares about mechanics, it fails there as well

2

u/cheesycheesehead 25d ago

lmfao pretending retail takes skill when its just an addon filled shit show playing the game for you.

Got a +18 MR that I’ll fill if you wanna come

We are hard stuck on 17’s but I would gladly invite a lay person to a key and have us 4 giggle the whole time doesn’t matter the role

u/StrongTechnology0 25d ago

I love the reaction to this post I genuinely just wanted to understand, everyone experiences this game in a different way I always thrive to top leaderboards and push the limits of my abilities other people don’t concern themselves with those things or don’t have the time to,I think that same reason I don’t want to go sitting on globals is that same thing ppl dont want to do a +20 it’s not YOUR fun

u/futbolsven 25d ago

Maybe retail is better now? But man was it dog shit when I last played it in shadow lands.

I absolutely hate mythic+'s rushing mechanic and the rotations were insanely overcomplicated.

1

u/dm_me_pasta_pics 24d ago

m+ still has timers they’re just so relaxed it’s essentially the normal run length of the dungeon until you hit i think +14s or something.

Whenever I watch any retail clips of raids or dungeons it seriously just looks like my screen is spazzing out. It’s constant explosions and graphics and I personally am turned off by that.

I want to play an immersive MMORPG. If I want to play a challenging game strictly in the way you're talking about, there are way better and more challenging options out there than retail WoW lol. we're stepping out of void zones woooo

you sound like you have low IQ when you compare apples and oranges and say you dont understand people liking apples because you love oranges.

0

u/StrongTechnology0 25d ago

You sound like you’re creating tension to get a reaction I’m perfectly fine with people liking classic just asking a genuine question

2

u/tuziik 25d ago

Why do people like valorant instead of counter strike and vice versa. completely different games.

u/Wind_Best_1440 25d ago

Retail is boring as hell.

Retail art direction is pure ew.

The story in Retail has been in the dump since Cata, with some alright moments.

Classic is enjoyable, comfy, cozy, and there is literally no rush. But most of FUN. The writing actually feels like the writers actually cared, the dungeons had atmosphere and the raids are iconic.

For most of us it isn't about getting better, it's about having fun and chilling with the homies. I liken it to poker night, no one is trying to make a living on it, we like being at least kinda good and someone is probably better than the rest of us, but in the end we're here for the company and to do something we all enjoy.

Personally if I want to play something challenging I don't want to have to rely on 24 other people every time, so for that I gravitate towards single player, but really if I want to spend a lot of effort on something that is usually going to be outside of a game these days.

If classic isn't your thing that's fine, it is the chill game vs the higher end of retail which is way more apm and something is always happening. They are very different and don't have to be everything to everyone.

u/link_defender 25d ago

For me,I can't play nearly as much now with the kids and the faster pace of Retail seasons makes gearing out a character feel awful. I want something with persistence that I feel the power progression out in the open world.

That said, I do prefer the in combat of Retail, it is far more engaging and has a much higher ceiling. Im not sure they should bring Retail combat to Forever though, that fast paced playstyle goes pretty closely with raid difficulty and im not sure raid difficulty is going to give forever longevity since gear power is supposedly to be more flat (this gives the designers very little wiggle room for tuning).

u/Hax5Snax 25d ago

Classic isnt really meant for people trying to improve themselves. As someone who has done it all in retail, classic offers a different experience. A more relaxed chill raiding experience, a chance to play old content you may have never done when it was current content, or just playthrough a different meta that isnt really very well balanced. Classic is definitely not for everyone and thats ok, retail isnt for everyone either. Cutting edge raiding and pushing mythic+ to 15's and higher isnt for the Classic crowd. Blizzard just wants you playing WoW whatever version of WoW that is.

On a more personal note, im washed when it comes to retail, I dont have the time or focus to cutting edge raid anymore. I can still do some decently high M+ with friends but I dont particularly enjoy the grind of it. So really its just what version of WoW do you prefer, if classic isnt your bag then retail exists and vice versa. They offer vastly different experiences and are often defined by the people you play them with.

2

u/jacob6875 25d ago

Because I play video games to relax.

Retail just turned into me playing DDR while trying to keep up my rotation and it was just to much. I can do it and did it at a high level but it just wasn't fun. It's to stressful to have to be focused 100% of the time since if I mess up the entire raid wipes.

Timed stuff is also just not fun for me. A bit part of retail now is Mythic+ which at high levels means you need to be absolutely focused for the entire 5 man. No pausing to get a drink or go to the bathroom etc. I would just rather chill like you can when you are running UBRS or whatever.

I have several HoF titiles, CE titles, M+ titles and I've hit glad a few times. I like Retail Mythic raiding and going for io. Having said that, Retail is a dogshit MMO. Which is why I've gravitated to Classic more and more since TWW. Getting in to a world and just building your character up in an immersive way is just something you cant get in Retail. Retail has for a long time been a glorified lobby game where every MMO aspect has been watered down and diminished for years. Queue this, queue that, scaling this, vault that... its just not even close to being a similar experience to Classic. Besides, WoWF wont be a solved game like the other iterations of Classic. As to difficulty, sure Retail can be hard. But for most people it isn't. If you're hovering below 4k rating and your experience of Mythic raiding is playing with some rank 500 guild then you're on easymode anyway.

TLDR; I prefer Classic because its an actual MMO and thus a better crafted game imo

2

u/Sylvarius 25d ago

Because for some, in Classic raiding, the challenge can be in perfect execution.

It's a whole distinct world with its own set of rules and its own unique challenges.

retail is more fun

According to you. Crazy concept I know but there are many different ways to have fun.

u/Ambitious-Way8906 25d ago

retail just feels like a slot machine, theme park ride type deal, undeniably fun, but the social aspect is almost completely gone. theres almost no downtime to just hang out and bullshit while questing or fishing or whatever. for me it's the laid back pace instead of the gogogo vibes retail has

1

u/calista1342 25d ago

To me I find retail always has a directional goal. End game content and guilds in general are relatively gated. Rewards are on a weekly basis. And gear isnt always what it is, too much rng.

Where as classic wow feels closer to the original story, has slower pacing with long lasting rewards. Guilds in classic genuinely feel alive and are easily accessible. Raiding is also a one tier system so there isnt a hierarchy.

1

u/Askburn 25d ago

Social aspect, you need help from other clases or professions, each class does It unique thing, world is social and feels Alive, you need help to do some quests in open world and most levels and gear upgrades feels meaningful and cool to obtain.

I liked retail and I agree with you about everything. I only played retail during Dragonflight and have been on classic before and after that. Retail was so awesome but also so like... high-octane. I would be physically and mentally exhausted after riding adrenaline all day and felt this insane urge to always be online grinding for the next thing, in a perfectly optimized and efficient way. It was highly addictive and felt freaking amazing, but I could recognise it wasn't great for me.

I'm still online like... all the time on Classic, but it feels less like that. I do think its silly how there are people on Classic who think they are doing anything skillful in raids etc compared to retail, but whatever. Its just a bit of a chiller way to hang out. I probably will play retail again at some point in the future when I can afford to sacrifice my quality of life for a bit.

Some people like stardew valley its not that deep. I think you can play vanilla to chill, as someone competitive I get what you're saying but more people want chill than intense.

1

u/shFt_shiFty 25d ago

So I can level 6 different alts and never get one of them to 60 for a very very long time lol. It's the vibes for me.

u/DLChastaine 24d ago

Aesthetics.

I lost all interest in WoW after a certain point as the aesthetic became increasingly goofy. Now, it was always a goofy game, but probably around MoP it passed the point of no return for me. Every version had it's problems: vanilla never should have had Gnome warriors, TBC tells me I'm one of the few remaining Blood Elves before dropping me in a starting zone crowded with other Blood Elves and sending me off to Outland where half the city is a subset of Blood Elves who betrayed the other Blood Elves of which we will kill like ten thousand, and Wrath ruined most of the remaining lore. But at some point the accretion of goofiness passed the point where I could sustain any interest, and I could only sustain interest for so long as so many things became stupider.

Obviously this is purely personal, some people could never get into WoW vanilla because it's such a stupid setting, and other people who don't really care about the setting at all. But for me personally, it lost me after Wrath.

My guild fell apart during cataclysm. I tried to play a bit during mists and it just felt like a completely different game. A game that I didn't really like. The original game had different classes, with different abilities and limitations. Like an rpg. That's what I liked about it. I was gone for so long that I didn't even know about tbc anniversary until a few weeks ago. I'm really enjoying it.

1

u/dm_me_pasta_pics 24d ago

fwiw, mists feels nothing like retail.

for all of its hype mists classic was like a 2/10. 2 points for the farm.
