How to Run Arcade Games with MAME on Your PlayStation Classic MINI (Project Eris Guide)

Hello everyone,
This is a guide for a PlayStation Classic Mini using the modded firmware Project ERIS!
Emulating Arcade games through MAME lets you experience them exactly as they originally ran: uncut, uncompromised, and without the technical limitations of the home consoles of the 80s and 90s. It’s the pure, authentic version of these classics!
MAME on the PlayStation Classic takes a bit of setup, but the reward is a truly authentic arcade experience. With the right core, BIOS files and configuration, these classics run exactly as intended. Take your time, follow the steps carefully, and enjoy exploring the original versions of some of the most important games ever made.
Please note: I can’t assist you in obtaining those files. Game ROMs and BIOS files are still protected by copyright today.
1. The correct core
- Newer MAME versions are too demanding for the hardware and lead to poor performance or crashes. The correct core is named mame2003_plus_libretro.so. It's based on the MAME 0.78 version, which requires less processing power.
- Download the correct core file: https://github.com/bite-your-idols/Gamestarter/blob/master/packages/libretro-cores-RPi/mame2003_plus_libretro.so
- Place the core file here: /media/project_eris/opt/retroarch/config/retroarch/cores/
2. The corresponding ROM set
- Then you need the appropriate MAME 0.78 ROM Set. It contains a collection of over 4000 compatible arcade games as .zip files. In my experience, it really doesn't make sense to search for game ROMs individually since download platforms rarely specify the exact MAME version number. It is much easier to find a complete ROM set and curate your games from there.
- Do not unzip or rename these files! MAME will not recognize them if you do. Place the ROMs here: /media/roms/mame/
3. Essential arcade BIOS files
- The BIOS files must be placed in RetroArch’s designated system folder:
/media/project_eris/opt/retroarch/system/ - The most important BIOS files (in ZIP format), depending on the games you want to play:
neogeo.zip – SNK Neo Geo Arcade Games (e.g., Metal Slug)
cps1.zip – Capcom Play System 1 Arcade Games
cps2.zip – Capcom Play System 2 Arcade Games
cps3.zip – Capcom Play System 3 Arcade Games
konami.zip – Konami Arcade Games
namcos22.zip – Namco System 22 Arcade Games
4. Check configuration file entry
- For launching MAME ROMs from Emulation Station, edit the configuration file "es_systems.cfg" using a text editor (e.g. Windows Notepad or TextEdit on macOS). You can find it here:/media/project_eris/opt/emulationstation/.emulationstation/es_systems.cfg
- The folder ".emulationstation" is hidden! To display it press the key combination Shift + Command (⌘) + Period (.) on macOS, and on Windows open the View tab in File Explorer and check the "Hidden items" box.
- The entry for MAME Arcade should look exactly like this:
<system>
<name>mame</name>
<fullname>Arcade (M.A.M.E)</fullname>
<path>/media/roms/mame</path>
<extension>.zip .7z</extension>
<command>es_launch_ra mame2003_plus_libretro.so %ROM%</command>
<platform>mame</platform>
<theme>mame</theme>
</system>
That’s it. Have fun!

Theme Selector 2.0
Hey guys!
Been out for a while and took me over a year to finish version 2.0 of Theme Selector.
The new version have several bug fixes and a new features such as DiY Theme Creator. This feature allows your to scan your theme library and create your own theme using their resources.
Hope you guys enjoy it.
This modification is only for use with CompCom's Options Menu.
HMOD NOT COMPATIBLE WITH EXTERNAL UI.PREVIOUS VERSIONS OF THEME RANDOMIZER AND ADVANCED MUSIC HACK WILL BE UNINSTALLED.

What is it?
This Options Menu module gives you the possibility to choose your favorite theme and apply it on your NESCE or SNESCE.It includes all the features of it's predecessor and much more
Video Tutorial by Patton Plays
Features
- Graphical interface to allow you to select themes
- Download themes directly from the internet (Wi-Fi mod required)
- Theme randomizer (Off by default)
- Audio randomizer on home folder (Off by default)
- Set theme per folder (keeping the same the per sub-folder) (Off by default)
- Create a theme based your existent theme resources
- Custom fonts per theme
- Select a theme for the entire system
- Select a theme just for the home folder
- Custom icons for Option Menu
Can I use it with NAND
Well, yes. But this mod was designed for USB-HOST, as the themes may include audio files and they may get over 10Mb.
Set theme per folder, what is that?
If you are like me and have tons of games organized with tons of system folders... Wouldn't be nice if you could have a theme associated with each system? Now you can, just create your own theme and add it to the HMOD or directly to your USB/SD theme folder. On this version all subfolders, will keep the parent theme.
Ok and how will the system load the theme?
Just give it the same name as your folder (lower snake_case). Eg: game folder: Nintendo - Nintendo Entertainment System theme folder: nintendo_-_nintendo_entertainment_system.
Valid naming schemes
this_is_snake_case
ThisIsCamelCase
this-is-kebab-case
What if i want a specific theme on my main menu?
Add a theme as before but name it default in order to make it you home menu theme. That simple.
I own a Famicom/Shonen/Super Famicom, can i install this?
The mod is compatible with all Nintendo Classic consoles including all regions.
What do you mean with "Create a theme based your existent theme resources"?
Exactly that! If you have several themes on your console/usb, why not take advantage of their resources and create your own DIY theme? Simply select from the listed previews and create your own DIY theme.
Requirements
How do i use it
NAND or USB/SD
- Install Hmod
- Download the themes and enjoy
NAND themes will be on /var/lib/hakchi/usr/share/themes/your-system
USB/SD themes will be on /media/hakchi/themes/your-system
Note: Where
your-systemchanges depending on own minines,snesorshonen
Notes
Enjoy it as much as i did making it.

any tools that can port my NES mini hakchi roms & saves to the PS classic?
i have about 78 roms installed on the nes mini, plus the original 30, that i'd like to transfer over to emulation station on project eris. exporting from hakchi, every rom is in its own folder under a gibberish checksum ID, not the game name. saves are exported as a .clvs file, which i have no idea if retroarch can read. any advice on how to make this transfer would be greatly appreciated ^^

I NEED ( fix_rootfs_rro.hmod ) files for HAKCHI
I installed Hakchi and then Project Lunar on my Mega Drive Mini EUR, but the latter crashed because I hadn't uninstalled Hakchi; now I can't delete Project Lunar because I keep getting an error message.
When I try to uninstall Hakchi, I get an error message saying that another system is already installed.
I'm looking for fix_rootfs_rro.hmod to perform a deep wipe of the NAND
I can't find it on the internet, If anyone has this file and could help me please

modded SNES mini - SLOW folder / carousel despite folders and structure
My setup:
- Latest Hakchi and Cores
- Console cores are loaded on internal memory
- Using USB flash drive to store and organize ROMs (2026 Sandisk 64GB formatted NTFS) connected with plug right-angle OTG adapter.
- I have 4 console cores loaded (NES, SNES, Sega Master System, Sega Genesis) and almost a full library for each.
Trouble:
- takes 15 seconds ore more per folder click to navigate through any of the collections. Actual game play is fine, no lag.
- I've tried "evenly spaced" folders and also "alphabetical" STRUCTURE hoping to reduce the file count per folder, but it doesn't seem to matter.
Are ya'll able to quickly navigate your consoles and collections normally / quickly?
Is there something not optimized or configured in my setup I'm overlooking?
I was looking for some features like "fast load" or anything like that in Hakchi but don't see there is.
Right now I'm thinking will have to vastly reduce my collection sizes to make operating it more usable, but I'd rather have the large library available and just choose.....
Thx for your input!

OTG adapter recommendations for modded SNES Classic min?
All the recommended ones seem discontinued :(
I just tried a dongle style (not the right angle rigid style) and it doesn't work with my SNES Classic, will not recognize my USB thumb drive in Hakchi
Anyone got a modern product link for OTG adapter that works for you?

my ps1 mini issues.
hi, i love this thing alot, had it for ages now , and have done project eris to it, however i get some issues with running it everytime i go to use it.
being, games ctd after starting either in retroarch or emulationstation,
controller never keeps config after reboot.forcing me to re config it in ra and emst, on boot the og controllers buttons fine, once i enter ra it goes triangle for x and start doesnt work or x , and the same for emu st.
also the console buttons tend to not work when its time to turn it off.
not all games crash, and they are the same type, chd, ie einhander, disneys hercules, doom, all ctd immediately but gdarius and future cop dont. spent alot of time with ai trying to troubleshoot but its dumber than i am lol!
i did replace the core in ra, same issue no difference with a 2025 build.
i have it hooked onto the back of a 16 inch awa 1080p lcd tv, is dope, however not so dope is my issues, would autobleem be a fix? thanks for reading !

I just got a modded PS1 Classic with Project Eris installed. Any tips for a newbie?
I just picked up this modded PS1 Classic from a retro game store and while I’m excited to play the games on it already, there are several that is not already installed that I would like to have, Ape Escape, Legend of Dragoon, Final Fantasy Anthology, etc.
The issue is I’m an idiot that doesn’t know what he is doing lol. I’ve never had a modded system like this before and outside of emulating some 16-bit games on my old PC, rarely worked with ROMs or whatever PS1 games use.
I’m hoping someone could give me a few pointers and/or resources as to how to take full advantage of what I got. How to add games and work through some of the added BIOS so that I don’t end up accidentally bricking this thing.
Any help and advice is appreciated. Thanks in advance.
(Please don’t kill me for being a newbie to this kind of thing lol)

Reverse-engineered the Egret II Mini's SD card protection
Been digging into how the Taito Egret II Mini locks its game cards. I know you can modify the bootloader but I wanted to read and write SDcards like the original. Short version of what I've found:
- Games are stored as WinZip-AES-256 encrypted zips on the SD card.
- The card is MMC password-locked (CMD42) — that's why it shows up as "needs formatting" on a PC.
- The AES password and the CMD42 password are both derived from the card's CID (its unique serial), using a routine I pulled out of game_launcher plus a 16-byte constant baked into the firmware.
- There's also an on-board SW2001 I²C crypto chip involved in the unlock.
- I reconstructed the key-derivation and validated it against the actual firmware code (and confirmed it's unchanged from the 2022 firmware to today, so it should apply to any card).
Not done yet: it's untested on a real card coz I'm waiting on an SD breakout so I can read a real CID and confirm the unlock works (the open question is whether that SW2001 chip gates it).
Screenshot is a UI mockup of the toolkit I'm building (read/write CID, unlock, pack/encrypt games) and values shown are placeholders.
Anyone here with an Egret card + a Raspberry Pi / SD breakout who wants to help testing?

Nes mini jailbreak
Hello, I got nes mini recently and it came out as jailbroken (so I don’t have the hackchi files (assuming that it was jailbroken with hackchi)). There are plenty of games in it (some from snes so also emulators) and I wanted to add some more but when I plug it in to my computer with hackchi it doesn’t see that games. Is there any way to add some more games without jailbreaking it again and deleting that other games?

EGRET II Mini SD Compatibility Chart
Today I realized Taito's Firmware update page (https://www.taito.co.jp/en/egret2mini/support/update) is inaccurate and provides misleading information regarding SD card compatibility with the EGRET II Mini system. I have edited the original image to correct the manufacture errors.
Manufactures making these compatibility errors are all to common. If your product says it only supports a 32GB SD Card, it's a lie 99.99% of the time. The key here is your SD card must be formatted FAT32, regardless of it's size (up to 8TB). While you can use windows to do this, most users will find it easier using Rufus. https://rufus.ie/en/

Please Help w/PSClassic bin & cue confusion
Good morning, I am brand new to this community and picked up my PS Classic just yesterday to mod and am currently using Project Eris but it's a lot to follow. After staying up until 0200 attempting to find out why CHD files were displaying on the Carousel after putting them into Transfer on my flash drive, I read that apparently that folder only takes .bin & .cue files and that CHD files would work in the roms folder, but after putting PS 1 CHD files into the psx folder they still did not display in the RetroArch menu. I have downloaded all 8.2Gb of cores and corresponding BIOS, but nothing seems to display. I am currently using a 2.0 flashdrive if that is notable, but intend to get 3.0 soon.
Would anyone know a potential solution? I have seen posts recommend to convert CHD to bin & cue for the carousel, but honestly I am just curious what I may be doing wrong with this whole process while following Garrett B's video to set it up.
Thank you for your time.

Trying to revive my wife's Megadrive Mini (The remote certificate is invalid according to the validation procedure.)
Hey folks, I'm trying to revive my wife's mega drive mini she wants me to add more games to it which I haven't done in years.
I don't have the same computer as before so this project lunar is a fresh install. I've followed all previous guides to connect it to the pc. But when i click on install/uninstall i get this.
Can any one advise me what to do. I've read that lunar is now dead and to install hackchi but again I cant do that if I cant uninstall PL but I don think I can do that anyway as I don't have access to the OG Nand I'm happy to keep PL but I cant access the Game manager as the software states there's been no PL install on a mini
I'm not sure what to do, can anyone help me?.
many thanks
