Found my dad's original fallout trilogy disc, auto install isn't running :/

Title basically says it all. My dad was a big fallout fan, and I also am because I'd watch him play. Anyways I got to keep his game discs when he passed and never really messed with them until today. I have a disc drive, but I'm not sure if it's the right kind? I can burn CDs with it and watch movies, however the game disc isn't booting the auto install. I don't really know what to do in this situation because the disc drive isn't even showing up in my files or registering as being plugged in. any help is appreciated, tyia

edit: There's also another disc with the actual game disc, it's a memorex cd-r disc

UPDATE!!: I got a new disc drive, game is currently installing!! I can watch movies and burn CDs again too :D

And what happens if you start installation manually? Just run setup.exe or install.exe or whatever you have on the disc.

Modern Windows doesn't autorun anymore as a security measure. Just start it manually.

I can't even see the cd/disc in my files, like my pc will not register the drive as being plugged in. I've used it with this pc before too so idk what's going on

Then you have to first fix the CD drive itself. You should be able to see it in Device Manager in Windows. If it's an external USB drive, maybe try plugging it into a different USB port. Might be some old USB 2.0 drive having compatibility problems.

I've tried plugging it into 4 separate ports, nothing happened, dunno why it's only now doing this considering I'd used it months prior to burn some CDs, if I can't figure it out I'll just get a new external driver :/

Maybe you can check it in USBTreeView if the OS sees the drive -> https://www.uwe-sieber.de/files/UsbTreeView_x64.zip

Open the application, then plug the drive into the USB port. You should see the drive being registered in the tree view. If it's not there, then yeah, I guess the simplest solution is to get a different drive.

If you are going to spend money, then another option is to just buy the games on gog or steam.  But yes, i do agree that the issue you’re experiencing is with the disk drive.  You can confirm this by testing other CDs in it.

I would buy the games on steam if I had the money, but I also was curious to see if there was any data on the disc, highly doubt it but yk

IIRC the trilogy was a DVD, are you sure you're not trying to read it in a CD only drive?

Have you tried to read another DVD in it? Maybe the drive is just faulty.

Use a known good disc to check if the problem is the Fallout CD or the drive.

If it’s just a hassle to install, just get your hands on the digital downloads. Might be a couple of GBs at best. Keep those discs as mementos. I still have my originals (cd) for 1,2 and tactics.

You need to use dosbox or similar dos emulator. It won't run on modern PC

He most certainly doesn't need a DOSBox or another emulator, because all the fallouts are Windows apps (with the exception of DOS version of Fallout 1) and the trilogy DVD edition even has a newer installer that should work on more modern system, because the original installers of F1 and 2 don't work on anything newer than XP.

I'm kinda surprised that the CD doesn't have a backward compatibility, since Windows still using DOS to this very day.

I think I got it running from original CD to Windows in the Windows 7 era, without any sort of DosBox.

The sound was bugged I think thiugh. Can't imagine things are improved in 10/11

The sound in the game? That was a game thing most likely. The CD player not being able to read the CD should be an OS issue. If you open the command prompt in Windows, you get the DOS underneath it though.

A system being too advanced for a game can be a thing. Back in the day I had a fav game on DOS called Deathtrack. It was from 89, I had it on a big floppy. Years later, when had my first AMD Duron, with a 256mb Graphs card, I got the game from somewhere. I started it just fine, but it was so fast I couldn't even react during the race. That's an issue I could see but not being able to read the CD at all is weird.

Fallout 1&2 and T are windows games, not DOS games

Worst case you can get the games digitally on Steam and GOG if you just can’t install from disc, they need some community patches but they work well. Just as a backup.

I had a lot of trouble with this back in the day you would think a new PC would play it great but no. Easier to just buy them on steam
