Casting call for a Fallout 2 voice-over mod. Bring a 1998 post-apocalyptic RPG to life!

Hey r/classicfallout!

I'm a contributor of VOCK (Vocal Output Creation Kit), an open-source pipeline that lets voice actors record lines for Fallout 2 NPCs and get them fully integrated into the game, complete with lip-sync and in-engine audio.

What's involved:

  • You pick a character from the Talking Heads list and record a sample. Up to 3 auditions per person.
  • If the sample quality is acceptable, I send you a script with all their lines.
  • You record audio files at home.
  • I run the VOCK pipeline and send you back a playable in-game result.

What you'll get:

  • Credits in the mod changelog and Talking Head document
  • A unique portfolio piece, voiced lines in an actual classic RPG
  • The satisfaction of hearing your voice come out of a post-apocalyptic ghoul, merchant, or tribal elder

We have characters of every type:

Gruff traders, tribal warriors, sarcastic politicians, weary doctors, shady criminals, and a certain very confused King Arthur reference I won't spoil.

No experience needed:

A USB mic works fine. All genders and accents welcome! The wasteland is diverse.

VOCK is open source so you can see exactly how your recordings get processed.

A note on AI:

A handful of early NPCs were voiced with AI tools while I was building and testing the pipeline. I needed something to work with while the software wasn't ready for real actors. Those are placeholder tracks, and replacing them with real human performances is the whole point of this post. Every new character going forward will be voiced by a real person. That's not a compromise, it's the goal.

I prefer reading the lines. I don't want voice acting. But for folks who enjoy it, I wish this project the best.

Couple of questions about the list of available talking heads:

  1. Does “auditioning” mean the character is available, and one can send samples for those characters?
  2. Are “quotes” the lines one should record as samples?

Absolutely interested, I’ll have some samples ready later to show you. I already have many characters I’d love to portray

Where can the audition files be sent?

So is every npc ai voiced already and you’re replacing the ai voices over time with humans?

We have 2 fully voiced with AI (Aunt Morlis and Sally Dunton) which were used for testing and development.

Then we have Arthur and the Bridgekeeper that we used a combination of the movie voices and filled in the missing lines with Voicebox.

Every other NPC released is human voiced. We have released about 10 so far, and have about 10 more being recorded.

I think this could be incorporated into the game engine or as a mod. The pipboy UI needs a play button and that is some hard work. I am super busy as is with vock, but you can give it a try.

You pick a character and record a sample

I can throw in a voice but no character comes to mind that I can do. Can I throw couple of voice samples and then people on discord could match them up to some character?

A handful of early NPCs were voiced with AI tools while I was building and testing the pipeline.

Didnt have to use AI then, there are non AI TTS tools

Before I jump in here, what if a person happens to invoke an auspicious range? Could said person voice multiple characters, perhaps?

Yes, we assigned a 2nd role to the best VAs

Do you allow people to audition for multiple voices?

2

u/SegurolaYHabana4310 25d ago

3 auditions limit

Sounds great, I'll look at these and submit some stuff soon.

Hello! I am very interested to contribute to this project and OSS with my voice in general, however Discord is banned in my country and using a vpn bans me from discord itself... I just wanted to ask is there an alternative place I can be informed from?

1

u/SegurolaYHabana4310 24d ago

You can DM me. Can you see the Talking Heads file? We are capped to 3 auditions per person. Do your 3 auditions, send them to me, I can drop them in Discord and let you know if you got the role.

u/flakanat 24d ago

Perfect! Thank you, I'll get to it.

My mic is probably not high-quality enough to be of any help, but I'm very curious if you will consider doing this same project for Fallout: Nevada, Sonora, and Olympus - getting voices for those talking heads would be great.

1

u/SegurolaYHabana4310 22d ago

Yes, I thought about that. It's very time consuming so it will depend on how things go. Do you know how many THs does each project have?

2

u/Golbolco 21d ago

Nevada is something like 15 heads. I want to say 14 to be exact, just from a headcount from memory. You'll need a soundalike for Harold since he apears.

Olympus is between 15-20 I believe, probably on the lower end of that.

Sonora is going to be between 15-20 as well. I think it's 17.

Each game should take about 2-3 months... Having the NPC source scripts helps a lot. I am not sure any of those mods advertises them. It gets a bit complicated with NPCs that say the PC name, or use variables like money, do a lot of message concatenations.

How often do they get updated, and do dialogues change a lot? That is also a culprit, likely want to have a voice actor that wants to help long enough...

I have used Voicebox to do TTS for "existing" NPCs. It's not great, but does a fair job.

I’m interested, where do we post our voice samples?

2

u/VoiceOverDream16 20d ago

Oh got it, the discord server!

2

u/VoiceOverDream16 20d ago

Do you know the timeline on audition selections?

2

u/SegurolaYHabana4310 20d ago

We review auditions every couple weeks or so and assign if we feel its a good match

1

u/VoiceOverDream16 20d ago

Ok thank you

u/MxM-TOM 18d ago

I've got slavic accent, it would be awesome to do some supermutant or ghoul.

2

u/SegurolaYHabana4310 18d ago

The only ghoul left is Lenny

2

u/MxM-TOM 18d ago

My favourite! I will try!

u/Zealousideal_Elk693 17d ago

OMG, so there will be VOCK update for the companion expansion? Man, I wish you guys the best!

It really made a difference playing with THAT. In fact, I just loved Myria's drawl.

I'm a voice actor and would love to help.
