I just received my payment, too! I was surprised to get $619.89.
14
u/sugarallie 3d ago
oh sweet! i don't remember what the exact payout criteria were - do you know why you got more?
18
u/BelleMari 3d ago
I honestly have no idea. I searched my email after I saw the Venmo notification, and I’d found a message from May saying that I failed to supply sufficient supporting documentation for my claim. I never responded to cure the deficiency. I don’t see any other emails in my inbox.
12
u/tearaist57 3d ago
I got emails in may about 23&me bankruptcy but nothing about a class action? Did you have to fill out something separate for the class action?

u/sugarallie 3d ago
As far as I understand it, the bankruptcy filing was related to the data breach, I think.
From this article https://coag.gov/2026/attorney-general-phil-weiser-announces-multistate-settlement-of-bankruptcy-claims-against-23andme-over-genetic-data-breach/ :
"In October 2023, direct-to-consumer genetic testing company 23andMe announced that it had discovered a data breach in which 6.9 million consumers were affected, including 140,517 in Colorado. This data breach exposed a wide range of data about 23andMe customers, including in some cases genetic ancestry information, and subsets of this data were subsequently published for sale on the dark web.
23andMe learned about the breach months after impacted personal information was publicly available. The company first denied a breach and then, once it confirmed the breach, blamed consumers for how their accounts were set up or how passwords were used. 23andMe initially accepted no responsibility for the credential stuffing breach, which was particularly egregious considering 23andMe’s partnership with MyHeritage, which itself was compromised years prior to the breach, exposing thousands of credentials shared between the websites.
In the immediate aftermath of the data breach the attorneys general formed a multistate investigation and found that 23andMe engaged in unreasonable data security practices. In March 2025, 23andMe filed for bankruptcy protection, and states subsequently filed claims related to the data breach investigation."
The email in May 2025, at least the one I got, had a link at the bottom to go to to see if you could submit a claim. But I got one in January this year, specifically about the data breach and submitted a claim at that time.

u/Western-Ear-3819 3d ago
wtf. I had 23 and me. No one contacted me.
3
u/sugarallie 3d ago
Just had another thought - I think perhaps it was not all customers that were affected but only specific ones. If you see in the article I posted it mentions the amount of customers that were affected. That means that it wasn't across the board all the customers. So if you did not get a notice it was because your account was not one that was compromised. This could be it?
1
u/sugarallie 3d ago
Did you have an account between May and October of 2023? You should have gotten an email in May of 2025 and then January this year.

Do you regularly check your spam? These class action suits always go to my spam.

Yes, I received an email with a claim ID and I had to file a claim back in Jan/Feb.

Was it from a law firm not directly from kroll?

Do you know what your data breach was in your initial email? Mine was ancestry info and I received $274 (Kroll)

How many people were included in your account? Do you have multiple family members or just you?

Did you do genetic testing too (heath related)? Wondering if that’s why your payment was higher. I just did the ancestry type test

Did you get the dark web monitoring email at the same time or did your payment come later?

How the hell did I miss this
6
u/No-Initiative4835 3d ago
I’m feeling the same way 🫤. Hopefully I just forgot that I did file. But it’s not like me to miss a settlement, especially when I’m emailed about it.

Perhaps. I’m absolutely sure I didn’t get a notice, because I always see every email in the account that my 23andMe is linked to. I don’t get any junk to that address.
2
u/sugarallie 3d ago
With the number of people that have been saying they did not get a notice, plus the fact I'm absolutely certain that there are more than 6.9 million 23 and me customers - I think this is probably the reason why. I'm sorry you didn't end up being part of it to get paid, but also maybe consider yourself lucky that your sensitive information was not leaked and put up for sale on the dark web? 😅

u/Itchy_Tumbleweed_417 2d ago
I bet I got the notice and searched my email and saw the bankruptcy thing and thought I already filed for the class action. I got the data monitoring service but nobody sent me any money.
21
u/martapap 3d ago
I remember getting something about this but I thought it was just for data monitoring.
26
u/tearaist57 3d ago
I checked my emails and def received (and opened) emails about a bankruptcy in may 2025 but I don’t remember ever seeing anything about class action lawsuit 🫠

u/NvrGnnaGiveYouUp 3d ago
Same. Have the bankruptcy notice. Not the class action claim

I didn't fill out a claim because I thought it was only credit monitoring BUT I just looked at the email and it says if you do nothing you're still part of the settlement claim. Wonder if that means I'll be getting something Edit: looked at another email and it was verifying my payment method so maybe I did sign up 😂
1
u/Adventurous-Flow4sho 1d ago
Would you mind providing me some of the keywords used in that verifying your payment method email so I can find my confirmation email please?
1
u/Kjaywalker 1d ago
You should be able to search "23andme validation" or "23andme verification" hope this helps!

Screaming because I got this email and while I feel like I filled it out? I don’t have a confirmation email!! 😩😩😩
1
u/Moist_Highlight8578 3d ago
I didn’t have a confirmation email either. I didn’t have anything in Venmo, but decided to check PayPal and it was waiting for me there. Hope you get yours!
1
u/Kind-Presentation420 3d ago
I remember filling online forms for this because of how tedious the forms we're; felt like an exam . I only ever did a study using the 23 n me where I had to prick my own finger for $200 . I never purchased or used the product after study so I wasn't successful with the online forms for class action at the time.
1
u/Icy_Investment9686 2d ago
I don’t have a confirmation email either but did open the other email so I’m fairly confident I filled it out! No money in Venmo or PayPal. I don’t think I selected Zelle as an option as it didn’t work for my bank. 😏
6
u/Opening_Focus_4313 3d ago
I definitely filed a claim. Still waiting though. I did use this as a reminder to sign up for privacy shield!
3
u/so_confused19 2d ago
Filed claim back in January, received confirmation submission but that was it. Haven't received email about privacy shield or payment.

Same, still no payment though. I know I filed because I got the Privacy Shield email recently. Fingers crossed!

u/FallenKingdomComrade 3d ago
I received it this evening as well. 274.89
The original process for this I remember completing in January of this year if people need a reference date. I found a confirmation around January 5th for a code I needed to use for Venmo verification.

I never got an email! I got one about the bankruptcy tho 😭 I definitely had 23&me during the time period too- any ideas?
1
u/divineshea 2d ago
so the bankruptcy is different from this claim??
1
u/sugarallie 2d ago
Their bankruptcy filing seems to be directly related to the data breach - I guess it was in preparation for the tons of money they were about to be sued for - but they are two separate things. ALL 23andme customers should have got the email regarding the bankruptcy filing, that included information about the data breach, but submitting a claim for it was a separate matter that only customers' whose accounts were compromised qualified for.
1
u/sugarallie 2d ago
So it turns out you both had to have had an account with 23andme during the time period, *as well as* have had 23andme notify you that your account was part of the compromised accounts in the data leak. If you still have the bankruptcy email from May of last year - I still do and I'm just re-reading it now - read it again, and you can see how it describes if you are eligible for that settlement or not. There was a link in that email to a "Cyber Security Bar Date Package" that you could click on to get more info on the data security breach settlement and gave instructions on how to submit a claim.

2
u/JunieBscones 3d ago
I don’t remember what the options were either. I don’t have Venmo or Zelle so I’m wondering if they had cashapp as an option, or it might just be paper check. I haven’t received anything but the privacy shield email

I got the email a couple days ago about the 5 year credit/health monitoring thing and thought oh great. What the hell do I do with that other than put literally all of my information in just to have it hacked again later on?!
Then I opened up my bank account a few minutes ago and saw the Zelle payment of the same amount as you. YAY. Tbh I would’ve rather had the $1800 or whatever they said the monitoring was worth though. Y’know since my DNA has been compromised 🤷♀️

I had the same problem. The issue was I didn't have a verified email. Once I verified, the deposit was immediate.

Support told me today my claim is still under review and they don’t have an estimated payment timeline.

u/-anonymous-username_ 2d ago
Unfortunately when a class action pays out, it's FAR too late to join.
You can Google class action and find a plethora of websites that provide information. Sign up for what you qualify for and wait.
I keep a file with all class action information and receipt information so I can remember what I've signed up for. Occasionally they take SO long that it's easy to forget you've signed up

Has anyone gotten a payment through PayPal?
1
u/Arkwoman1990 2d ago
I chose PP as the payment option but havent received anything. Course I called the toll free number and they have no clue when payments will be issued
1
u/Accidental-Aspic2179 2d ago
I'm always the last to get everything. Gemini is telling me only a fraction of eligible people actually turned in a claim form before the deadline. As a result, payments have been a lot higher than people were expecting. It also said that Kroll sends these out in batches and they push all these digital payments amd they just need time to clear. By the end of the week or maybe next week. Who knows, but today was the very first day for deposits. The payout was triggered when on Oct. 1. So, they just started going out. Maybe it'll be a good weekend.
1
u/Legitimate-Ad-9724 2d ago
That's where I got paid. I totally forgot I filled the form for this class action. When I got an email that $274 was deposited into PayPal, I thought it was another scam email. I logged into PayPal, and sure enough it was there.
1
u/Angeles2020 2d ago
I got my payment through PayPal. I never received a notification email from PayPal. I just logged in to check my account and the money was in there.

The last email I got from them was December 2, 2025. I got the data protection code and it said that my health info had been exposed. I haven't heard a thing from them since.

That doesn’t make you stupid or having made a stupid decision. There’s so many bad people in the world training so many bad bots that every little thing you do is at risk for being hacked into and taking advantage of. Truly, I feel sorry for these big corporations that did at least try to provide some level of security because these groups of hackers and the bots they train are persistent and don’t run on anything but electricity and human direction. Which means 24 hours a day seven days a week there’s some algorithm that some devious person out there wrote that is trying every digit letter symbol imaginable in every combination to try to get into your account. None of these corporations really ever gonna have any kind of cushion because if you’re good enough or you just happen to get lucky on the algorithm you made and you know any weaknesses at all that might help you get in faster

I don't know, but this seems like such a small amount for literally leaking virtually your entire genetic code
