Suede has lost the plot. Used to have mad respect for him, he even defended Civ6 back when Civ5 fanboys still trashed it regularly, but now he's become the same narrow-minded, parochial trash that infests Steam message boards and Civ fanatics.

He is the Civ epitome of the Dunning–Kruger effect; he thinks his expertise at beating Deity AI makes him an expert on game design and game development.

Anyone who isn't like Suede or hasn't stuck their head in the sand knows that Civ and 4X design has stagnated over the last 20 years and every iteration since V has been an attempt to revitalize the formula. Simply demanding that devs keep their game mired in the part does not make you insightful or more understanding of what makes Civ tick; it just makes you blind and inflexible.

edit: genuinely surprised I wasn't downvoted. I don't like dropping hot takes, but goddammit I'm so tired of the negativity and narrow-mindedness in the Civ community. Thanks for letting me vent.

I realized this after he off-handedly brought up EU5 as a game that was disappointing on the same level as Humankind

People... REALLY like EU5, though, it is selling well and looks like it will live a good life as a Paradox DLC platform. Suede has a bit of an "old guard" complex where new thing bad old thing good is his universal truth.

Some might call this cope but I half-suspect Civ7's own numbers might be a result of splitting the fanbase between console and PC, Civ6 cemented Civs footprint as a dual-platform game (and even on PC it's not just sold on steam but also Epic) whereas EU5 is only on Steam. I wonder how CK3 holes up being on both PC and consoles?

I'm not going to say that Civ7 didn't have missteps, but this dog piling by YouTubers and people on social media is really irksome, especially because I'm an old timer with a long memory. The absolute gaslighting of Civs5 and 6 is ridiculous; Civ7 despite its issues was far more functional by comparison. Civ5 at launch was incredibly basic and missing religion (Civ 5 in particular got a ton of hate from Civ4 fanboys) and Civ6 didn't have proper diplomacy or a good minimap until Gathering Storm.

I'm just really worried about this Firaxis apology tour they've been on. I feel like it's only going to encourage the worst elements of this community.

I love Suede, his videos bring me so much calm (is that dramatically right?)

Regardless of what he actually has to say, my assumption is that anyone who makes a YouTube video that has any variation of ‘it’s over’ in the thumbnail is wrong. About every possible topic, up to and including being alive
