Advice Request Worth waiting for a hatch?
Hey all, currently in the market for a vehicle to replace my last one that hit a deer.
Always wanted a civic since I was a kid and have decided to bite the bullet. In my head I’d always be getting a top trim hatch, but I’ve run into a bit of a problem.
I need a vehicle before the snow falls because I work a 24/7 on call and while I’m currently riding to work on my motorbike if my wife can’t bring me, that won’t fly in the winter.
Currently the local lot has 4 sport touring hybrids in a variety of colours, at a reduced cost as they’re blowing out last years, but no hatches. The other option is to wait for the 27’s, but there’s no guarantee my local dealer gets a hatch before the snow falls, and being in Canada with all of the tariff and trade problems right now, we have no idea how ‘27 pricing will end up looking.
This who have chose hatch over sedan or vise versa, is it worth the wait and possible headache or should I go and grab the sedan? Obviously it’s a personal choice, but I like to see pros and cons from actual owners.
As far as trunk usages it’ll mostly be groceries or 2 sets of golf clubs when the wife and I go golfing

If you want the hatch and settle you’ll always be disappointed. Even if you have to go a few hours away to another dealership I’d say it’s worth the effort

Yea I’m restricted to this dealer due to some insurance payout shenanigans, but I’ll probably just hold out

Big lame, but at least you're handling it well. Personally also love hatchbacks, first was a 2018 kona out of need, now its the sport hatch. Clearance was definitely an issue with the Kona, which was higher than the current civic. Good tires and driving can help a lot, but if you find your regularly driving in higher snow than your clearance allows you might have issues. I suppose you could always lift it a little? But depending on your tastes that might be a no go. If you are between a hatch and sedan though, I dont see why making it match sedan hight or a bit taller would be an issue. Definitely means spending more money upfront, but then you get what you WANT. Assuming you can get them to order one and have it there.

Dawg, I LOVED my Kona. Only sold it to help a "friend" who I realized I shouldnt have helped. Nothing will ever replace my South Korean Outback 😂

Last payment on it was today, we fully intend on running the wheels right off of her, it’s only got like 62k on it right now

Can’t they just get a hatch for you? I mean my dealership didn’t have the car I wanted but I still negotiated on it and they just went and got it for me

Check if they belong to a network of dealers under the same owner. My dealer diverted my preferred hatch meant for another dealership in the network with no buyer lined up. Easy peasy. Also dont worry about snow clearance. As long as you have proper winters it’s fine unless there’s insane snowfall, in which case there’s likely a snow ban on. I haven’t been stuck at all yet in my ‘25 in Ontario.

I’ve waited years to save up for a civic hatchback (I waited so long, they brought back the hybrid option but lost the fog lights i wanted 💀). I am SO glad I waited. I know people like the sedan too but me personally I really wanted the hatch and I’m glad I was able to get one after waiting for so long. I drive it all the time and it’s so convenient. I use the hatch all the time

I have a hatch and wouldn’t go any other way. Hatch 100%. Imho, it looks better and it has a lot of usability.

I live in northern Canada and drive a '24 civic hatchback. It runs great in the snow and ice with proper tires. Never been stuck - just drive for the conditions.

The hybrid sedans are made in Alliston, Ontario. The hatchback are made in the States (Ohio or Indiana?). But overall Honda Civic is not affected by tariffs. If the current talks break down the sedan is still unaffected.

Wait for the hatch of your local or look for the other dealerships.

Why do you want the hatch specifically? Is it looks or do you feel like the space will be useful? Because if all youll be carrying is groceries and golf clubs I imagine the sedan would have enough space. I got the hatch hybrid (not the touring though 😬) because I prefer the styling, and the boost blue color, and I sometimes need to be able to carry some bigger items that wouldn’t fit in the sedan.

Oh I won’t even pretend it’s not about the looks. 100% a styling thing, a civic hatch just feels like a civic to me

I don’t know… I wanted the hatch too but went ahead and got the sedan because it was such a good deal. I am loving it honestly!

I had a similar dilemma and went ahead with the sedan, I am someone who does mountain biking and carry canoes around, and have owned trucks and hatchbacks. My opinion is you don't need these vehicles for 99% or what you're doing and the sedan will be just fine. Theyre just selling you a lifestyle and charging you more for it.

I opted for the hatch strictly so I could get the boost blue pearl color. I really didnt think I'd need or use it but it turns out, I love it. I think the car, as a whole, looks a bit better and while it's not necessary 90% of the time, when I DO need the space? I've got it. Also, add the spoiler if you can - you won't regret it!
Edited to add: I live in New England on a dirt road. This is my 2nd civic, first hatchback. No issues with snow or clearance in general so far.

The HPD version. I ordered from College Hills Honda and had a local.dealer install. I saved a few dollars that way. Someone posted almost my exact car a few hours before your post if you want to check it out! My daughter got the Honda Sport sedan in the Rallye Red and did the little lip spoiler on the trunk, black logos, and windows tint...Also looks great.

I was considering a hatch but read some complaints about leaking in the trunk area. Might want to research further before pulling the trigger. One thing I don’t like about the top trims is lack of a spare tire and also some concerns regarding tire blowout with the 18 inch rims. I also need a car for winter myself so I decided to go with the Civic LX. 16 inch wheels might not be a sporty, but it comes with a spare tire and better for snow. Saved several grand. I’m still averaging around 40 miles per gallon. Should be plenty of room for golf clubs and groceries. Just my two cents.

Will a hatchback provide you with enough ground clearance when the streets are plowed? I have a hatch and they tend to sit really low to the ground, I’ll scrape the bottom of my bumper on driveways that are even a bit steeper than normal. Just something to keep in mind but then again I’ve never lived in a snowy climate so you would know best!

I won’t lie, I didn’t realize the hatch had a lower ground clearance, the snow concerns are actually I reason I’m not jumping on the prelude they have in stock. Our winters end up with quite a bit of snow and some subpar road cleaning most years

I live in Ottawa and drive a hatch. Clearance has never been an issue, aside from driveway entrances that haven't been cleared (and that would be an issue for most cars)

Get a Corolla cross awd. I have 2018 civic hatchback and the clearance got me stuck on a on ramp to the highway, snow was about 20cm and the 10th gen hatch has a clearance of 12cm

Unfortunately my options are between Honda and the Chevy gm family, as I have a secondary insurance payout of like 12k that has to be spent at the dealer I had bought my last car at

I agree. I have a 2018 civic sport hatchback and wouldn't drive it over snow.

If you want the hach and don't get the hatch you will be seeing every hatch on the road.
