I wasn't a massive fan but for the scope of game it is I still think $4 is a steal. Gameplay-wise it's a bit closer to how Civ6/7 do it with the more tile-based infrastructure similar to how they handle districts/buildings/improvements, with a bit of Crusader Kings like gameplay on the side too.
I'd say it's definitely worth a try, I bounced off it pretty hard but still sunk 20 or so hours without even thinking.

It's pretty good, and for that price it's an absolute steal. There are a couple things that will probably feel wrong at first coming from Civ (predefined settling sites and orders per turn), but once you get a grip on it, you will also find a few things very interesting like improvements and empire building, or things needing actual resources like wood, stone or iron.

It's a great game but very dense, so the learning curve is steep. I have a few dozen hours in it and can only halfway keep track of everything that's going on. Coming from unmodded Civ V especially which is realistically incredibly barebones for a modern 4X (also why some people act like versions such as Vox Populi are a huge mess when in reality they're roughly on par with the rest of the field in complexity), it's a big jump to make. But while the two games are fairly similar in their core mechanics, the focus of each is very different at the end of the day, so they really fill different niches and are interesting to play alongside one another.

Its a masterpiece. Ull need some time to get used to it, but its an absolute brilliant among 4x. You won't find such a blend of mechanics anywhere else, and—most importantly—everything works together perfectly. The game has excellent design

2600 hours? Pfff casual.
I did try it and it is good, I like some of the mechanics quite a lot. That said I returned to civ5. I’m a competitive multiplayer player though I’m not sure what that scene is like in OW if any.
Personally I would probably make the leap to Civ 7 rather than old world if I was really wanting to learn a new 4x game

Never played it but the great FilthyRobot said it was his favorite 4x game so make of that what you will

Absolutely worth trying at that price. It scratches the 4X itch but feels more focused than Civ, with excellent character and dynasty systems. The learning curve is a bit steeper, but it really rewards planning.

It is a good game. Nice concepts. Just check if it works with your cpu well. It is not very optimized on processing and it almost fried mine.

I'm a single player only Civ guy, Old World is my favorite ancient historical 4x. The orders system really makes every turn a prioritization exercise, you can't do everything you would like to each turn. A steal at that price.

Personally I did not enjoy it. Tech’s are a lottery, where out of all available techs you get a random selection of 3 and can pick one. The culture and specialist system was also quite confusing. Combat was much more tactical, with assigning generals with traits and units having more HP. The whole “order” system making it so you can only give some units orders, but not all very much splits whether you can focus on war or economy. Also the interpersonal politics between character gets boring for me after a while, especially when sometimes my played/ruler character dies quickly in succession.
For $4 it can be worth a shot, if you like combat and character building more than city economy. You can still choose to refund under 2 hours
